Advice for installation of Marble Fireplace Please? We recently bought an Aurora "Micro-Marble" fireplace from a DIY store. We bought it on impulse and thought it was a good idea at the time. It comes in 6 pieces including the hearth and the back panel. The instructions are very minimal with basic diagrams which only tell us what goes where. There were no fixings, no advice on how to assemble it or anything. It looks to us like we need to use some sort of resin to bond the mantle and legs together, but what do we use? Whats going to be strong enough to hold it? Its so heavy! Its only to house an electric fire, theres no chimney or flue to worry about so it's purely decorative, but it needs to be fixed together, and also anchored to the wall. To be honest, we're regretting buying it, as we really have no idea what we're supposed to do but can't take it back now so we'd best get on with it. Please if you know what we should be using and how to fix it I would very much appreciate your advice! Many thanks & kind regards
Fireplace logs for cleaning chimney? I just bought a house with a fireplace. I heard that you can buy special logs to burn that will clean your chimney out. Anyone ever try them? Or is it just better to have someone come clean it for you? Or is it something you can DIY? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

limestone fireplace fitting(essex)? i recently bought a limestone fireplace, believing it would be one piece on delivery. it wasn't and now im being advised to have it professionally fitted. im in essex, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced fitter within the m25, with a good reputation, as they want 200-300 pounds and i just cant afford that. failing this can anyone advise a good diy book so that i can attempt it myself. really appreciate any help with this guys , cheers
What is the easiest way to build a decent fireplace mantel? I am working on building a fireplace mantel. I took out the old cedar that surrounded the bricks. I was using the instructions on the DIY website but can't see the pictures that well and the instructions aren't that detailed. The demensions are 67.5" wide by 44" tall for the bricks. the brick platform in front of the fireplace is same width as the fireplace with no extra brick on the side. My question is what is the easiest way to do a decent mantel? anywhere I should look that I haven't tried yet?
What is better and more economical than a wood burning fireplace? gas, electric or pellet? We currently have a wood burning fireplace. We would like to get an insert. Any suggestions as to electric or gas or pellet? What are the pros or cons? Cost? Installer? DIY?
Fires resistant...? I'm doing some DIY and I'm making a feature of where the fireplace used to be in the main bedroom. I'm looking for some sort of solution or paint that's fire resistant as I want to put some candles etc in the fire. Does anyone know of anything? It's only going to be a few candles so it wont be getting that hot but better to be safe than sorry. It would be to protect some plasterboard that I forgot to tile. Tilling isnt an option now as it's a cost factor.
How do I make floating shelves? I want to fill an alcove (1.8m wide) with wooden shelves (I'm thinking oak or pine, at least 3cm thick, but perhaps they'd need to be thicker?) It's an old house - the side wall and fireplace on either side of the alcove aren't straight, so I can't do the baton thing that DIY sites seem to favour. I'm assuming I'll have to drill into the wall and the shelves, put metal bolts into the wall and slide the shelves on. But how do you stop the shelves sliding off the metal bolts? For a gap this wide, how many bolts per shelf would I need? Also, how far into the wall would I need to drill to make the shelf sturdy enough to take a large number of books (the wall is stone). And where can you buy the metal bolts? Any tips / advice welcome
how do i make cement.- simpliest instructions please!? ok...diy is not my thing on a practical basis, but i need to put a layer off cement down for the front of anold fireplace to cover the old broken cement...i need an idiot proof description ie.add this to this then do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a split level home built in 1986. What changes can I make to update it and increase my resale value? Upper Level - 1 master with small 3/4 bath; 2 guest bdrms; 1 full bath Mid Level - front room and kitchen Lower Level - office; 3/4 bath; and family room with fireplace. We recently had a new roof and siding put on and plan on landscaping the front for "curb-appeal" in the spring. In the meanwhile, we were hoping to get some ideas on how to spruce up the house DIY style. Initial thoughts are: 1) Replacing vinyl flooring in all bathrooms with ceramic tile. 2) Refinishing kitchen cabinetry (their all wood) 3) Putting in laminate wood flooring in kitchen. 4) Replacing appliances (they're all probably 10 years old) if there's money left. Any advice or other suggestions.
How difficult is it to rock an existing sheetrock fireplace? The area is approx. 11ft. tall 5ft wide and 2ft deep. My husband and I have done many DIY projects, (tiled, tin ceilings, etc) We are just wondering if this one is too difficult. We like the stack rock look. Can anyone offer suggestions on ways we can fit this into our budget. (which is minimal, lol!) or can estimate a cost of having this professionally done?

I have a painted, brick fireplace that I want to finish to look like flat concrete. What should I use? I've seen this process on a DIY show and they mentioned using a 'conrete plaster'. They applied this with a trowel & smoothed out the finish. It looked like stucco or Venetian Plaster when they were finished...very nice! But I don't know what this material is and can't find any info in the archives. And I haven't been able to find anyone who is familiar with this product or process. I think I can just use a mortar based product, but I would really like some advice from someone who has some experience with this type of project, as mistakes will be nearly impossible to correct!! PLEASE HELP!!!!
