Roofing Diy Questions
DIY recommendations for low slope roofing.? The low slope roof of our guest house had a leak. I've removed the old roofing materials and replaced the damaged plywood. Now it is time to reroof but I have a hard time finding low slope roofing materials that a home owner can use. Homedepot sells roll material by Henry -specifically for low slope roofs- that is appealing but they don't sell Henry's `aqua prime' that this material calls for. I have yet to locate a store who either carries Henry's aqua prime (HE102) or has an alternative solution. Any recommendations for materials/methods are greatly requested. I'm located in Santa Cruz, CA. The roof slope is ~1/2" in 12". Aqua prime is used to prime the plywood before putting down the adhesive low slope roll material. Aqua prime takes the place of felt paper as used on regular slope roofs.

Create a DIY Snow Melter? I want to create a snow / ice melting cord like the ones you buy for your roof. Is this something that can be safely done by a reasonably handy do-it-youselfer? I am interested in creating a DIY Snow Melting cable, not a DIY self-electrocuter. It would not be used in a fixed location (ie, no plans to attach to roof) and it is not going to be buried in concrete. And ideas welcomed. Thanks for the suggestions so far, where is a good place to get these pre-made wires? (In Canada)
diy instructions to convert an attic in the uk? Hi I would like example steps to take converting an attic to a usable room, ie spacer between roof underfelt and insulation to allow for airflow, vapour barrier to stop moisture getting in, etc etc
Would You Like To Save $20/mo. with DIY Solar Water Heater? I save $20/mo. on our water heating bill by installing a solar pre-heater made of 200' of garden hose on my roof. From Amazon I bought two 100' GILMORE 3/4 inch FLEXOGEN hoses (withstands 500 psi pressure), laid it out n garage roof, hooked it to the cold water pipe that goes to gas waterheater. Now all cold water to the waterheater is solar pre-heated. I installed 3 shut- off valves, in case I want to take the solar heater out of the system. One at the beginning of the garden hose loop, one at the end, and one in the coldwater line between the beginning of the solar heater loop and the end. It cost me $140 for the hose and less than $60 for the rest. At $20 savings in gas a month, it will have paid for itself in l0 months. To use mostly solar-heated water, we don't use hot water before 10 or after 4. I did this 3 months ago and the gas waterheater hasn't been on since. The solar heated water is 135F, and the gas waterheater is at 125F. We always get 135F water at the faucet
Can someone give me a DIY in painting? I don't have the money to have it done. I am willing to give it time though. It can be a good project. it has 3 coats already and some rust bumps on the roof. 93 honda lx
To get a Toronto building permit, do you need a building consultant/draftsman/engineer to specify materials? Want to build an addition. Some existing structure will be altered. Have to do everything el-cheapo and except for framing and roofing everything will be DIY. Already consulted building dept. web site, then called, and of course I got conflicting and/or ambiguous and/or contradictory and/or uninformed opinions--typical bureaucracy--so I have two choices: shell out the cash for a high-end designer/engineer so the b.d. can say I didn't need to, or waste more time on my own well-researched design only to have them throw the application back at me. They don't really want you to know that MAYBE you don't need one, but insist all drawings are marked with designer and credentials which is simply me and none, but that probably won't fly.

What type of Asbestos in partition wall? My Victorian house has a partition wall of thin boards lightweight, pos Asbestos. I don't know when the partition was done. If they are Asbestos are they likely to be the same type as roof slates ie. where DIY removal is allowed? What's a fair price for a lab test for these boards and Artex ceilings? Many thanks
Leaking shed roof. Good company? Hi, im based in Middlesbrough Uk. Have bought a house in august with a garden shed and have just noticed the shed is leaking on the 2 outer edges of the roof. What is the best thing to do to sort it out? I can do light diy eg painting, fixing shelves and jobs around the house but not sure if this would be too big a job to attempt. Can anyone recommend a good value company to get in? Thanks There is water leaking down from the wooden panels on the roof. I cant see exactly where the leak is coming from as it is raining and dark. The roof covering looks like felt like this picture and is shaped like this. http://www.bleakleybuildings.co.uk/hobby_shed_img4.jpg alphacenturi, any chance you can do it for me?? So if i did it myself, im assuming i do it when its dry, how long is it best to wait after the rain has stopped?
Where can I find metal saddles for attaching patio roof rafters to existing roof? Where can I find metal saddles for attaching patio roof rafters to existing roof? The bracket or "saddle" I'm looking for is in an article from a DIY soft-cover book - pg 74 - Building Techniques - the title at the top of pg 74 is, "Building - from foundation to rafters". I only have a copy of page 74 and don't have the whole publication.
Opinions on fixing a big dent on the roof of a 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport? During Katrina, a tree limb fell from a very tall tree that's on the side of our house onto my fathers Dodge Dakota, leaving a rather large dent on the roof (to get an idea of the size of the limb, it fell at least 40 ft and took 5 guys from up and down the street to move it off the truck). Now my father, being the lazy guy that he is, never bothered to get it fixed or asked his insurance company if they would cover it. Now, a couple of years later, my dad drives a Corvette and has given me the Dodge, but I would like to get the roof fixed, since some of the paint has chipped off and the exposed metal is starting to rust. I am a student without a lot of money, but I will be able to scrape up about $1500 to get this thing fixed and I'm not afraid to make a DIY project out of this to save money. One person told me to get a new roof, but thats out of the question, and my gut tells me to grab a sledgehammer and bang it out, but I dont want to risk damaging my truck. Can anyone help me?
Good home improvement sites? Does anyone know of any good sites that show how to DIY with various home improvement projects? Anything from carpet, tile (ceiling and floor), drywall, roofing, and everything in between. Thanks.
Please go to answers home and vote for change!? I posted a suggetion that home and garden should be broken into more parts. I know that the DIY and Maintenance parts are a pain the way they are right now. I feel they should be broken into parts ie.. electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, roofing, walls, etc.. If it were that way people could answer questions with expertise much easier. Pets are already set up this way. If you agree please go and vote!

Condensation in the attic? Can any DIY buffs help me with this one. We have had a new roof to our house which is a large semi and has one roof pointing NE and the other south-west (so it gets most of the sun). At about the same time I put some more insulation down (it was cheap in B & Q) which made the insulation over six inches thick. The insulation was in rolls and in a plastic covering- one orange side and one silver. The silver side is supposed to be upwards. Since then we have had heavy condensation only on the north east roof not the other. We also had two windows fitted on the sunny side and so this does heat up the attic. This can really be the only reason why it is warm in the attic- the insulation is too thick for it to be leaking up from the house. Is it simply due to the sun? Today I have reversed the rolls (orange side up) where sunlight lands to see if it makes any difference. Has anyone else come across this and if so do you think simply installing blinds on the windows would sort it out.
Building a used Conservatory? I have found a used Conservatory on ebay that I am interested in. It is in good condition and has the roof frame but no roof panels. Can you just use corrugated plastic for the roof? Also how do I go about building a base for it? My garden is on a slope and there are about three steps up to the door that I would like the Conservatory to come from. Obviously I would like it built up to the same level as the door. I do not know much about diy personally and a close friend who is quite good at most diy projects said they would have a go at putting it up for me. Will this be too much for the average diyer especially as it will have to be raised quite a bit? Also would it cost a huge sum just to build the base? It is a full height Conservatory. I am assuming these are easier to build? Anyone with any know how. I would very much appreciate your advise. It is a upvc conservatory and does not need a dwarf wall. Thats all I know about it really The seller called it a free standing conservatory
Cost of installing an attic fan or whole house fan? Hello All, We're looking to install a whole house fan / attic fan. The house is 1000 sq.ft and is two stories. How much should we expect to pay for the installation services? I live in San Jose, California. I want to make sure I'm not ripped off - not the DIY type and have to hire an electrician or contractor to do this for me. Also, how much should I expect to pay for a good attic fan itself that is controlled by a humidistat / two drive / belt driven and installed inside the attic (not on the roof)? Thank you for your answers. Sally
Replacing a box sash bay window with a door? how easy? Hi, I have a box sash window in my kitchen but no exterior door. I would like to replace this window with a door. Thing is the box sash is in a small bay, one large window at the front two small at the sides, looks like one complete frame, ie there is no gap at the corners between side and front windows. There is plaster on the walls inside and brick outside, no cavity (victorian house) , the window frames reaches to the top of the bay, the bay at the window measures 91" high 48" wide, the bay has its own little roof. the window is on the first floor and looks out onto a flat roof terrace, I want to get out there! Whats the verdict, possible, easy, could be done oneself or def a builder job? Funds are tight so hoping for diy advice really. Thank you . Pigeon feeder

Did I deserve such a hard time from my girlfriend? My girlfriend is currently doing a health and safety course. Yesterday I spent the whole day sorting out little diy jobs in her house whilst she was away. I made a nice dinner, prawn salad to start and salmon done with lemon and dill and laid the table with a candle in the middle. I thought it would be nice to open a bottle of wine and sit at the table talking about her course. I grabbed an ordinary looking bottle of red out of her wine rack, opened it and waited for her to come home. When she got home she hit the roof and said she had been saving that bottle for several years for a special occassion. ooops! I can understand her being a bit disappointed but I was only trying to be nice. She spent all evening muttering to her self in the kitchen "of all the bottles to open". We didn't eat at the table and really argued. I apologised until I was blue in the face. But she said I was like a child saying sorry all the time with no idea of how hurt she was! Is it just me or was she harsh! (it was a rossini borolo I opened, she told me it was worth alot of money as 1993 was a great year for borolo but I have rang lots of wine merchants today and they said 1993 was an average year and they had not heard of the rossini supplier. I know I cant replace the sentimental value of it but its not an expensive bottle!!!!
Looking for a Barn Style Storage Shed Kit? Does anyone know where I can purchase a good wood storage shed with a loft in the measurements of 10'w by 14'd by 12'h? I'm looking for a kit which I can assemble myself from a company that will ship nationwide. Don't want those cheapy metal sheds, looking for wood. Don't want those plans/blueprints since my carpenter skills are pretty limited. Looked at most companies but the roof heights are only around 10', need lots of loft space. Something just like a Tuffshed but cheaper. (BTW, Home Depot and Lowes don't carry sheds with ceilings past 10' specs on their diy kits). Thanks!!
I have a split level home built in 1986. What changes can I make to update it and increase my resale value? Upper Level - 1 master with small 3/4 bath; 2 guest bdrms; 1 full bath Mid Level - front room and kitchen Lower Level - office; 3/4 bath; and family room with fireplace. We recently had a new roof and siding put on and plan on landscaping the front for "curb-appeal" in the spring. In the meanwhile, we were hoping to get some ideas on how to spruce up the house DIY style. Initial thoughts are: 1) Replacing vinyl flooring in all bathrooms with ceramic tile. 2) Refinishing kitchen cabinetry (their all wood) 3) Putting in laminate wood flooring in kitchen. 4) Replacing appliances (they're all probably 10 years old) if there's money left. Any advice or other suggestions.
How much to replace a roof? How much would a complete tear down be on a 2,000 sq ft 2 story house? How much is material and how much is labor? Can you DIY?
Where can I get info on how to thatch my own roof? I am planning on building a log cabin and have access to free thatching grass and was wondering if anyone can help me find info on the net for diy thatching. Thanks for the sites but I have already read all of them you have mentioned. So far I have found a number of sites and free ebooks on log cabin contruction methods, so I am sure there has to be something or someone out there prepared to part with the information for free. Thank you kindly for the answers - I managed to find an out of print book listed on the Natural England Country Agency Archives website the link for anyone else who is interested is http://www.countryside.gov.uk/LAR/archive/publications/thatchers_craft.asp Thanks once again I plan on doing this in Rustenburg - South Africa.
