Flooring??? I am still remodeling my home from Hurricane Katrina. My front front room flooring is tile, but whoever put it down GLUED it down. I have tried using a floor scraper, to no avail. The easiest way is to get down on the floor with a hammer, and a hand scraper, and beat it half to death until it gives.....which where's me out quickly. So, if ANYONE knows how I can get this floor up in an easier fasion please contact me. Thank you , Starr
Sub Flooring...? We have a connecting floor from the kitchen into the living room only seprated by the archway & floor saddle. I want to put a new kitchen floor down & was told to throw 1/2 inch plywood on top of exsisting floor and then cover the plywood w the armstrong vinal flooring. It all makes sense, but im worried about where the living room & kitchen floors meet, the kitchen floor will be half inch higher. I really dont want a little 'step' when entring one room from another. Is there a special saddle for this half inch difference? Is half inch plywood to thick? If so, what should I use instead?. I hope i explained my problem & delema correctly. thank you all in advance ...Doug
Best flooring on an old rough floor please? I need to put down a hygenic floor in my kitchen. The problem being the existing floor is a little uneven in places. It is ancient concrete! If I lay Laminate I can imagine it being a pig of a job! if I lay cushioned flooring, is there a good 'underlay' which would minimize the un even-ness of the floor beneath, and prevent it from showing through eventually? do not want to rip up the floor and float off a new one :0)
Can I make my own hardwood flooring? I am wanting to put hardwood flooring in my kitchen and hallway. However, after pricing some flooring at lowes...it will cost almost $400 to do this. The space needed to be floored is 412 sq ft. However, I can only afford about $200 to do the space... Is there a way that I can make my own hardwood flooring or a place where I can find it cheap enough - like $.50 a sq. ft? I was thinking that if I get nice plywood, and cut it into planks, along with staining them and coating them, I could then glue them onto the floor just like you would regular hardwood floor. This way I could also make the floor match my cabinets... Any websites is greatly appriciated!
flooring adhesive removal? I lost the product name of the best low odor adhesive removal I ever used. Some years ago I worked with a friend to lay a tile floor. The adhesive was like rock under the old flooring. This stuff turned it mush with very little effort. It comes in gallon plastic jug. white with red writting. brush on thin coat then cover with plastic and the flooring adhesive turns to gell in a hour or two. These days I lay maybe 6 tile floors a year and as of yet have never found any thing as easy to use as this stuff was. if you can help that would be great.
Wood Flooring? I am planning on installing wood flooring onto a floor that is a concrete slab. One installer says to put engineered flooring on the floor in a floating method and/or glued. The other says to use 3/4 solid flooring nailed down. Any help?
Laminate Flooring Underlayment? Is this a necessity? Will laminate flooring become damaged over time if an underlayment isn't used? The previous owner of this home installed a wood floor in the living room without an underlayment so if I want to use a flat transition between this floor and the floor I'm going to put in the next room I'll have to leave it out to keep the floors level. If I chose a cheap foam underlayment how thick will it be? Thanks.
Vinyl flooring turning pink with bubbles.? I had vinyl flooring put in my bathroom on a concrete slab. The contractor put float down to level it(the power type you mix up then spread on the floor). When he put the float down the first time, the float started to bubble up in several spots when drying. So those areas dried with cracks and bubbles. So he scraped it all off and redid the float and it dried ok except for 2 place which he cut out the bubbles and put more float on it. Then he put the vinyl flooring down. After a few months, my vinyl floor has bubbles in several places and some spots are turning it pink (the vinyl's original color is tan). I have to put in a new floor now- what do you think was the problem? The original vinyl that was there before was fine, just worn out.
Bathroom floors: Tiles or vinyl flooring, which is safest? More slippery? Leak less? We have a large bathroom which also serves as a clothes washing room--washer and dryer, bathtub-shower combination, and a toilet. Which is safer/better for the FLOOR: vinyl or tiles? Right now we have vinyl flooring. It is somewhat slippery when wet. What about tiles, are they more slippery? We are on the 3rd floor. Do tiles leak? I'm thinking the cement stuff will eventually leak, especially if the wash machine over flows or something. We never had leaking with the large vinyl floor we now have. Cost is not a concern--lots of sales going on right now! Thanks for any input! The vinyl flooring is two huge sheets of vinyl, not vinyl tiles, connected with one long glued strip.

I have been reading alot about the downsides of bamboo flooring...besides their purported strength people are finding out they dent easily and stratch easier yet. But them I found out some information about Strand Woven Bamboo flooring and seems twice everything that standard bamboo flooring purports to be...anyone have experience with strand woven bamboo flooring (any brand?)????

help with flooring in Sims 2!? On the second and third floor of my sims 2 house there are floor tiles, but then there are also open spaces in between the tiles where I can not add floor tiles. All the walls are set up. How do I get complete flooring for the second and third floor of my house?
Can Radiant Flooring be put on a floor with a basement below it? I see radiant flooring used with slab foundations, but what if I have a full foundation, I know the radiant flooring is set and covered with cement. My concern is the cement being too much weight for the main floor. I don't want to fill my basement with too many floor supports.
Butyl Flooring Black Powder? We have an outdoor deck which about 10 years ago we had covered with Butyl flooring. This is a kind of rubber compound which comes in a flooring grade thickness. Now when we walk on it a layer of black dust comes off on our feet and is tramped into the house, where it is difficult to remove from the carpet. In fact we have made the outside deck a no-go area Can anyone explain what is happening and what we can do about it?
Laminate flooring? Hope someone can help, or offer a suggestion / opinion. At the moment in my flat I have carpet in the lounge and tiling on all of the other floors. I have recently dropped a hot iron on the carpet in the lounge and it has melted a horrible shape into it. I am thinking of claiming on my contents insurance for the carpet and am toying with putting laminate flooring down througout. Except for the kitchen and bathroom. My question for you is - laminate / wood flooring in a flat/appartment, is it a wise thing to do? Or will it make too much noise for my neighbours who share my block of flats? Any thoughts? Has anyone ever lived in a flat/appartment which had wood flooring?
Flooring Question: What flooring should I use for an entry way? My living room is going to be laminate wood flooring, but I am thinking of using another surface for the entry area, to create a sort of mudroom space. What flooring should I use? I want something very durable because the kids run in and out with sand and mud. Slate? The style of the house is rustic, so the polished or modern look wouldn't fit. Thanks for your input! If you reply tile or slate, what about the grout? I hate the way old, dirty grout looks. Are there any alternatives????
House Flooring adivise? Iam building a house and got struck to finalise the flooring. Can any one help me in finilising between granite flooring, marbonite flooring and vitrified tiles flooring. Please advise me in terms of aesthetics, economy and maintenance.
Hardwood flooring? How hard is it to install hardwood floors by myself? I am about to buy a 2,300 sqft. home and would like to install flooring myself so i can save some money. Also, there is a part of HWF allready installed in the kitchen. Is it going to be hard to take it off, or should i leave it and stain it to match maybe the new floor? About how much would a 1, 200 sqft. floor cost me to buy the wood? I heard that bamboo is the best to get. Thank you.
Laminent Flooring Question? I am working on a room that is 19x14. This is my first time doing a laminent floor. I am about 40% done when I realize I don't know what I am doing, after researching I found out that I am doing it all wrong. I didn't leave any expansion space and I didn't remove the trim arround the edges of the room. I did lay the waterproof plastic down and cleaned the baseboard very well. My question. I also found out that I should not be nailing the flooring down. I read somwhere that I should let it float. So two questions. What happens to a house / floor si you don't leave expansion space. what happens if you nail the laminant flooring down? Thanks I am a bigtime rookie at this and I think I really messed up scooby said that I should leave some space and do the quarter round. That is a great idea. I tried pulling one peice up that I have already done but the laminent flooring is noticed in such a way that I cant get it to come up. I am nailing it at an angle on female edge of the board so you can't see it. I guess I should have been using only glue? Should I take it all up and start again>? Wood is Amendium It is not the snap and groove type of floor. It is this.... http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100497049&categoryID=500577
laminate flooring...has anyone ever heard of Artisan laminate flooring? We went online to see where to buy laminate flooring and this company came up in los angeles and it is called artisan. Has anyone ever heard of it or know anything on this kind of flooring. we can't find anything on them except for their web site and it does not say who makes artisan flooring.
Can sheet vinyl flooring be PROPERLY installed without adhesive? I recently purchased a home that had been involved in a fire restoration. As part of the restoration, the kitchen & foyer floor was laid w/ new vinyl flooring. However, there is a noticable "buckle" in the vinyl that runs the length of the kitchen floor & is about 10" wide. Same story in the foyer. I also noticed the entire perimeter of the floor was caulked around the baseboards. I decided to pull back the vinyl in the foyer & discovered that there was little to NO adhesive; rather, the new vinyl was attached directly to the old linoleum floor with double sided sticky tape (looks like that clear packing tape)!! I was stunned...all of the other homes that we have installed vinyl in had new plywood subfloors installed & the vinyl laid over that with adhesive. When I contacted the restoration company to complain, they told me it buckled because the house had been vacant & I just needed to walk on it & it would adhere. I think it's substandard work & insurance fraud. Comments?
What kind of flooring do I need that can be cleaned easily when an invalid has an accident? I have an invalid living in my house. He sometimes cannot control his bowels and makes a mess in the floor. I currently have carpet over hardwood floor. I need the carpet to be taken out and want to find some sort of flooring that can be mopped with Clorox or Lysol in water to destroy odor. I would like to avoid any type of flooring that would have to be glued to the hardwood. It appears that all vinyl flooring has to glued down. Does anyone have any idea what I can put over the hardwood that will stand up to some serious cleaning?
Hardwood Floor or laminate flooring I have a boxer dog? I just got a dog and ripped off my carpet. Mow im thinking of hardwood floor. Is it smart to do it my self with the snap on flooring or real hardwood. I know real wood is expensive i dont know if the laminate flooring is just as good
Help with laying vinyl flooring? I pulled up my old vinyl kitchen flooring (7 years old) and found that the underlayment is in great shape except that the original vinyl was just glued about 3 inches around the entire perimeter. I scraped the old glue as best as possible and it is almost perfectly level with the rest of the floor. Does it need to be perfectly smooth where it meets the unglued edge or is a slight ridge OK to keep it from showing through the new vinyl flooring? I do have floor "sizing" that I plan to use where there are any nicks or impressions. Should I use the sizing around the edges and taper to the good flooring or am I overdoing this project? I plan to lay new vinyl flooring this wekend. I'd appreciate any good advice. PS: I also tried sanding the old glue to take off any high ridges using 80 paper. Thanks

Is putting in laminate wood flooring really as easy as they make it seem? I am moving into my first house next week and I am doing the laminate flooring myself....can anyone tell me if they have done it an how easy or hard it actually was? Also, do you know if I can just put the pad and laminate flooring on top of the kitchen flooring that is already there? Thanks for your help in advance!
repair laminate flooring warping? living area/kitchen area is covered in laminate wood flooring (i think it is the kind that snaps together). due to some major flooding (about an inch or so of water coming out of the bathroom, over the threshhold and underneath the wood), a small part of the wood floor got water underneath. i used fans on it and a dehumidifier, but the wood has seperated in a few places and sunken down in some places....kind of like a wave. is there any way to level the floor out without replacing the damaged pieces? i rent and i really don't want to forfeit my deposit or spend a lot replacing a floor that isn't mine. screwed. it's what i thought. :(
Took up self-stick floor tiles and now there is terrible, gooey adhesive residue on the old flooring.? The old flooring (sheet linoleum) is still ok but now we want to install a new ceramic tile floor over the old linoleum but the adhesive is horrible from those self-stick 12x12 tiles from Lowes (laid down about 6 months ago and we hated it right away but lived with it till now). We used "goo gone" but it's not working well and then the guy at Lowes said oh no, don't use that, it takes a week for it to dry right until we can install the tile floor. Now, we're still worried about getting all that gooooooey adhesive off the floor so we can lay the ceramic tile. Any ideas????
"Indestructable" laminate flooring question? We bought a house with laminate flooring and were told by a "professional" in a "certain flooring department" that laminate floors such as Pergo were "indestructable". Now, not even 6 months into living in our new home, we have a scratch. Does anyone know how we can fix it, hide it, etc. without replacing the whole floor?
engineered hardwood flooring (Pergo type) ? I am looking for information on the advantages of pergo type flooring. We would like to put this type of flooring in our condo. The condo rules say NO hardwood flooring, but these rules were probably written in the 80's. What are the advatages over the traditional type of hardwood flooring? Where can I find some info on the subject? Does anyone have a favorite brand. One that's easier to install than another? Any good tips about installation? Thank You!
Different types of wood flooring? I've alwayst thought that hardwood floors refer to the wooden planks that must be nailed down to the floor, but I'm a bit confused as to what laminant is. I have an aunt that just purchased some "wood" floors that were glued down. The planks lock together and are conected to the stripped floor with a sticky adhesive, but the surface appears to be a made of wood, a manufactured wood. Is this laminant or hardwood flooring? Someone told me that laminant was plastic, or something made to look like wood and the locking things that my aunt got were hardwoods, but I always thought that if it glued down it was a laminant. Could someone please explain this to me? Thanks, Chris
How to remove vinyl flooring? Hi I have a Kitchen in my house that the previous owner had covered half the floor with carpet, and the other half with Vinyl. (don't ask me why) Now I want to rip both of them out and replace them with ceramic tile floors. I know that I need to install sub flooring first to make the floor think enough for the tile, but would really like to get of the 20 or so year old vinyl. I know I can install the sub floor just on top, but was wondering if there was an easy way to get it out. I started to pull it out, and the first half foot was easy to take out, but after that, it was stuck there pretty good. So what is the easiest way to remove this, without damaging the plywood underneath. Thanks folks
How should I install new bamboo flooring over existing hardwood? I just posted another question about this but now I have another. I'm about to install bamboo flooring. I'd like to put it over my existing hardwood floor (which has been covered with carpet since long before I owned the house). I just took up the carpet and am prepping the floor. One problem is that the existing floor squeaks, ALL OVER. Does anyone have recommendations for eliminating the squeaks before I install the new stuff? I've run some nails and screws into the joists and they seem to help but it seems like I'll need a ton of them for this. Also, when I install the new stuff, which is tongue and groove, should I install it perpendicular to the existing flooring or parallel? The existing floor is already perpendicular to the floor joists. Thanks for the suggestions.
Laminate flooring in connecting rooms with different flooring heights? I am thinking about installing laminate floors through the downstairs of my house (livingroom, office and playroom). The level of the living room flooring is approximate 1/4 inch higher than the office and playroom. What should I do about that? Also if I decide to leave the playroom and office carpeted, what kind of transition piece would I purchase?
Advice on hardwood flooring please? I am on a limited budget and while I want my floors to look beautiful, I'd also like to be thrifty. I know nothing about hardwood flooring except that I want real wood. Can I cut costs with substituting wood varieties, grade etc. (I really don't know about wood "grades") I am looking to put down flooring in my bedroom (12X16), my foyer, dining roon (12X10) my kitchen (12X14). I know what stain color I want, though- a Jacobean stain I saw. I love darker colors. I don't want a lot of "knots" in the wood, either. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get nice looking floors that don't look cheap, but don't break me? Thanks a lot!
