Cabinet Lighting Questions
Installing under cabinet lighting? I want to add under-cabinet lighting to my kitchen. We want to use xenon/halogen strips under each of 4 cabinets and we wanna wire them such that no wires show and a light switch will turn them on/off. Is this something that an amateur can do? If we hired an electricitian, how much would this cost (ballpark figure)? picture of kitchen: http://img432.imageshack.us/img432/8820/kitchensizedae1.jpg u can see the 4 cabinets there that we wanna put the lights under to left of sink (behind paper towels) is a light switch to control garbage disposal and then an electrical outlet; i was thinking we could tap into that electrical outlet's power and install a light switch over there to power all of the lights. we wanna go permanent as part of our kitchen upgrading; we painted the kitchen today and are crown moulding this weekend; then we are gonna tile the backsplash, so i'm thinking we should do the undercabinet wiring first, or at least plan for it before we tile the area... all outlets in kitchen are GFCI
linking my cabinet lights? i have 3 striplights in my cabinet with 30w bulbs in each, is there a way i can join all 3 together so it running off 1 mains plug, what do i need to join them? Thanks
How do I hard wire an under cabinet light if it has a plug? Can I cut the plug and hard wire it to an existing box I stubbed out or should I install a receptacle and plug it in. I would rather hard wire it because the stubbed box will be covered up in a cabinet - I don't want an exposed receptacle "hidden" in my cabinet.
under cabinet strip lights linking? I need to connect several under cabinet strip lights but i can't seem to find the right plug that fits into the light fitting. It's a uk 3 pin plug but not the standard kettle style plug IEC C5 or C13 are there any other styles?
Cabinet/Closet lights? Where can I get battery operated tap lights to put in my cabinets and dark corners of my closet?
Low Profile Lights for Above Cabinet? Which are the best lights to buy to light my kitchen with over the counter lighting? I need them to be low profile as I've had a heck of a time trying to find stain to match my cabinets for moulding to cover the existing lights. They also need to be bright enough to light up the kitchen. I was also thinking of going under the cabinet but I'm afraid the lights won't be bright enough to light INSIDE the cabinets. I do however have a fan with a light that hangs from the ceiling.
Question about stick and click lighting for under cabinets???? I recently bought a brand new kitchen aid professional mixer. However, I have to get rid of one of the small lamps I have on my counter tops for extra lighting in the kitchen. I was looking to replace the lamp and purchase the stick and click lighting system. Are these lights fluorscent? Or are they like a light bulb that is more a yellow tint at opposed to white light. I hate fluorscent lighting. Can anyone recommend a light that can be easily mounted under a cabinet? Looking to not have to do any wiring. Thanks in advance for your responses! Brad
Why do our under-cabinet halogen lights repeatedly fail (i.e., entire system stops working)? We bought a small (3 light) under-counter set that is plugged into an ordinary outlet and installed the set in our kitchen. We love it...but after a time, it just stopped working. My husband replaced it with a whole new set...and now that one has stopped working as well. We bought a meter to test our outlet, but all we could figure out from that is that the outlet is delivering the right amount of voltage. What are we missing? We've not yet had a chance to try bulb replacement, since both times the whole set has failed (never one light, or two), which leads us to believe it's a "system" failure... Bruce--we've never had the chance to change the bulbs yet. The bulbs haven't blown--the whole system has failed. More info for Bruce--after our first installation failed, we threw the whole thing away and bought another one at a different home improvement store, so if we managed to catch a crappy run TWICE under those circumstances, then maybe we ought not even think about replacing the lights... I just tested the bulbs--all three are good.
Best paint color to match light oak cabinet & brown couch? Looking to paint my living room - small room, only about 15x15, 2 small windows. Not a whole lot of natural light, but there are 4 recessed lights in the ceiling. Was planning on a deep orange, but am afraid that won't work with my honey oak entertainment unit. Couch is dark brown, floor is undecided. The room partially opens to the kitchen, which is a deep red/burgandy. White isn't an option, and I don't want to do a sage green... any suggestions???
How do I wire rope lighting? I want to put rope lighting above my cabinets, but they are not all in a line. There is 1 cabinet then the window (no cabinet above and then a big section of cabinets, then a break, then the refrigerator w/ cabinets. How can I get all of these cabinets to have rope lights all on the same switch? Also, can I cut rope lights to fit the top of my cabinets, so there is no overhang?
Bathroom Vanity Lighting Source(s)? On the bathroom remodel, I would like to install the vertical lighting on either side of the medicine cabinet as per numerous lighting designers recommendations. Unfortunately, the available space on either side of the cabinet is limited to no more than 3", which has surprisingly restricted the choices so far to about zero. I would prefer fluorscent lamps with diffusers and brass base units along with electronic ballasts. After too many hours trollling the net and visits to local lighting shops and way too many catalogs, still no luck. Thanks in advance for any suggestions on suppliers to contact for this elusive piece of the remodeling puzzle.
A kitchen cabinet remodeling question? We are trying to have a good look without the big bucks and wanted recess lights but want to know also if it's possible to put (what type of lighting) right on top of new kitchen cabinets that we are going to install ourselves? Has anyone tryed other type of lighting on top of their cabinets and were you happy with the results?
This is designer question. I want to use the "new" stainless steel cylinder cabinet pulls? on my kitchen cabinets for a European look. My cabinets doors are a simple slab in a light colored maple, miscellaneaous heights but predominately 27 inches. How long can my handles be. And can they be micellaneous heights for the different cabinet heigths? Although I don't have that many cabinets, I have gone for the heavy "pro" look with my range and fridge. So I think I can pull off the look I want on the cabinets by the long stainless handles. Your opinion is appreciated.
Does the cabinet hardware in the kitchen have to be the same finish as the fixures throught the house? We are redoing virtually everything. The cabinets themselves are staying. They are pretty dark. The new appliances will be black. I am worried getting silvery colored cabinet hardware (whether it's nickel or chrome, brushed or satin...) will stand out in a bad way. But throughout the house, everything else (light fixtures and such) will have a satin nickel finish. Do the cabinet fixture have to be the silvery color or can I go with something that fits better with the dark cabinets and black appliances?
Sticky cabinet doors after painting.? Last weekend we painted all our cabinet doors. We took down the door sanded with 100 grit, then 150 too bare wood, then 220 to finish. I primed then painted 3 coats of latex paint with light sanding between coats. Its been a week and the finish is a little sticky when you touch it. Is there anything I can do, was thinking about putting another coat of paint then a clear coat on it. Will that help with the stickiness?
how do i change a lightbulb under an ikea kitchen cabinet? I have an ikea light fitting under one of my kitchen cabinets. The low voltage bulb has gone but i can't figure how to get it out of the fitting to change it. It won't twist or push in and there's no gap between the bulb and the fitting ot prise it out. Any ideas?
On Kitchen Cabinets, is it modern to leave the frames and just get lighter colored doors? I plan on removing this ugly wall paper, get lighter colored doors on the cabinets and hardware, try to get a built in table, recessed lights and under cabinet lights, different counter tops, my floor is tiled somewhere between tan and white, I have dark cabients (oak, they are solid). I have two window next to each other, with a shorter counter height and 3 cabinets below it, thinking of getting something done there too, like a big or 2 end cabinets to store some appliances and built on table, I plan either soft paint or something like green, red, or blueish or maybe yellow for the walls, and a white ceiling celing.
Kitchen cabinet remodeling questions...please help a clueless woman!? My kitchen cabinets are white. I want them to be a more natural wood color (light brown or something)--how can I achieve this without completely replacing cabinets? Also I want to redo countertops and replace sink would it matter if I did this before or after the cabinets? ***Please talk to me like you're writing one of those "for dummies" books as I really know very little about remodeling.*** thank so much for your help!
Cabinet and tile question (warm vs. cool colors)? Our kitchen is somewhat dark (not dark colored, just not a lot of natural light). I want to keep the floor a nice warm chocolately tile - I've found a tile I really love. My husband is concerned about what we'll do with our cabinets next, because it's the next project we'll probably do. When we reface or replace the cabinets, if we have a warm chocolatey tile floor with black appliances, am I going to want to go with cool color cabinets, or stay in the warm category? IOW, should warm and cool be combined in a kitchen as primary things (like tile and cabinets), or should you choose warm or cool as a theme with the opposite as accents? Thanks.
Contemporary kitchen cabinet color? I have a tan wall, light-colored countertops and floor, and stainless steel appliances in my kitchen. However, my cabinets have a terrible finish. I want to prime and paint them but I don't want to do the usual white paint. I considered black or brown. Any ideas? Has anyone ever seen cabinets that have been painted brown?
Need fixture color ideas for a purple bathroom? So my wife thought it would be a great idea to paint the bathroom purple.... okay that's fine, but whenever I go in there, I think of the Joker from Batman. I want to get a more classy and clean look in the bathroom. The floors and ceilings are white as are the shower and blinds. But we have all these fixtures (cabinet, towel rack, sink cabinet, lighting box) that are wood and they just look ugly with the purple. What color should I use on these fixtures? If anyone says green, I'll strangle them..... lol Also, what kind of accents with what colors will add class to the bathroom.
I need help with electrical lights ? I have under cabinet lights that are supposed to be able to work with several strung together but if I put even two together the second one doesn't work. Each light does work when plugged in individualy. There is no transformer they just have a direct plug in the wall cord.
Any suggestions on how to find a lost electrical wire within a wall? I had an electrician pre-wire a switch and whip for an in cabinet light. The cabinets are now in but the whip is lost within the wall and I can't find it by peering through the hole where the light will live. Any suggestions for how to locate it without opening up a huge hole?
