Do Lighting Fixtures have to be Listed by UL? I know there are other listing companies, besides UL, but if I am installing a lighting fixture, does it meet NEC if the fixture has no markings, such as UL listed. Where is in the code book that the fixture has to be listed? It is a recessed fixture, in a store, not hazardous location or anything special.
Need to fix fluorescent kitchen lights- fixtures not lighting up completely. Any ideas? I bought new bulbs for my 2 kitchen lights thinking my bulbs were burned out but they're still not working right. I have a round fluorescent light fixture as well as a fixture that contains 6 very long lights. I turn the switch on & it turns on but very very faintly like it's not getting enough power or something. Is this something I can fix myself or should I call an electrician? I don't have too much experience with this stuff but do have a little bit of general knowledge. Any ideas anyone?
Which low energy lighting fixtures to choose? The story is we employed an interior designer to come up with a low energy lighting idea for our new library/music room which is 24 sq metres. She showed us a picture of some lights and had us have the electrician hang 4 wires 1.5m apart for these lights (forming a square in the centre of the ceilling). When the wires were plastered in she admitted that her fittings took only halogen bulbs -which would have made 640 watts at least!!! We parted company with her at this point but now cannot work out what light fittings would look well and work well and obviously take a low energy bulb. We've seen some ball-shaped lights and wonder whether 4 of those would look OK. Whatever we decide on is going to cost around 800 Euro upward so I'd be grateful for any thoughts.
Where can I get my Martin intelligent lighting fixtures repaired in the US? I've got two MAC250s, one MX4, and four MX10s that are experiencing various degress of failure. The fixtures have been disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, but that did not solve the problems. Each fixture is at least two years old and is thus out of warranty. The last time I sent fixtures to Martin for repair, it took 2.5 months for them to return. I'd like to find someone in the US -- ideally in Pennsylvania -- who is qualified to repair the fixtures and who can do so with a more reasonable turnaround. Thanks!
lighting fixtures and ceiling fan problems? My father had hooked up a new light and and a ceiling fan. whe the switch was in the off position the lights and fan came on, whe placed into the on position the lights went off, then the fuse popped. there are 2 switches that control both one in kitchen and one in the hall. unsure if the circuit they are on can handle the wattage they are producing or if there may be a short in the switch any help would be appreciated. When the lights came on and the both switches were in the off positioned it acted as a complete circuit but when the switch was placed in the on position the light went off, but at that time it popped the fuse. The switches on the control both lights at the same time. When both fixtures were lights it worked fine, but once one of the light fixtures turned into a fan/light combo its not working correctly. Im thinking either bad switches or the area cant handle the wattage but unsure since, the main concern is the lights come on when both switches are in off position
The lighting fixtures in 3 rooms blew out within 2 days, what is the problem? My landlord goes awol when these thing happen. I know that it's probably a simple fix and just want to do it myself. Any suggestions? We've tried new light bulbs and flipping the breakers, neither worked. In fact, this has happened in every room I have.. but I don't know what the maintenance guy did to fix it.
Who manufactueres light fixtures for NMD-3 / wiring rated at 60 C insulation? An electrician told us that we need to find special light fixtures. Our home was built in 1968 and has 60 degree C insulated wiring. We want to replace an older light fixture (not recessed) and want to be sure it's compatible. The electrician told us to call around to find something that would work BUT I have called specialty electrical and lighting stores to ask about special ordering this sort of fixture but they tell me that there is no way to tell in advance whether or not a light fixture is rated for the 60 degree insulation. (FYI: We do not want to install a junction box.) Anyone know of a specific manufacturer who makes a light fixture rated to 60 degrees? Or are we out of luck? Thanks. PLEASE RESPOND TO MY SPECIFIC QUESTION ... "WHO MANUFACTURES LIGHT FIXTURES FOR NMD-3 / 60 C INSULATED WIRING". THANKS ... I'VE ALREADY READ THE TECH BULLETINS AND UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM (DONE QUITE A BIT OF RESEARCH ONLINE, READING IN MY DIY ELECTRICITY BOOK, AND SPOKEN WITH TWO ELECTRICIANS).

Can 220 volt electric flourescent light fixtures be wired for residential panel at 110 volts? I got some flourescent light fixtures for free and they are for a hospital that is wired for higher voltage for the lighting than 110v. The voltage on the box says 277 volt, but I think this is that they are rated up to 277, but made for 220 volts wiring. Do hospitals use 220v for their lighting? Is there a way to find out more about these light fixtures to be sure I wire them correctly? I want to wire them to use as indoor lighting for a house, and will wire in a 220 breaker, but need to know if i am right about the lights and the voltage rating for the wiring. Any advice is helpful and if you are an electrician, leave me an email or a website to learn more or to ask more questions. The light fixtures are brand new and never opened and they were just throwing them away. I have multiples, I want to wire them in parallel fashion to a 220 breaker in an existing house panel. Am I right, will this work? Thanks!
Scale of lighting fixture size to that of building? My mom is looking for lighting to put up around and in her barn that was just restored. Does anyone have any information on a scale that would show for what size of building you'd need what size of lighting fixtures?
have you had problems with Cooper LIghting 100 Watt Metal Halide Fixtures? We've experienced burnout of 29 of the 79 fixtures installed Ours are indtalled on the outside of residential apartments and have been tested as far as proper voltage - we believe this is a manufacturing issue - that the size of the unit does not allow the heat generated by the 100 Watt bulb to dissapate. Looking for others who have had problems with this companies fixtures.
Finding the best deal on light fixtures? I am puchasing all the new light fixtures needed to remodel my home. Does anyone know of of when Home Depot or Lowes have sales on lighting or where in Portland, OR I could look for discount fixtures?
Can you install a ordinary light fixture onto a recessed lighting fixture can? I have house with recessed lighting installed and want to install a normal stand-alone light fixture where one of the recessed lights currently is. Is it possible to use an adaptor of some kind to use the recessed lighting fixture, which is already anchored and wired, and attached the external fixture to the recessed lighting fixture? To start from scratch I think I would have to cut up my ceiling to remove the recessed light fixture and re-anchor the new fixture which seems like a heck of a waist of time. Thanks! UPDATE- I found a company that makes an adaptor that lets you screw in an ordinary fixture into a recessed light housing. The only downside is the stupid little metal plate costs 40 bucks- oh well. http://www.thecanconverter.com/ Thanks for everyone's help. Tim
changing out light fixtures for combination ceiling fan/light fixtures? im just replacing two light fixtures in my dining room with ceiling fan/light combos. The problem is arising with the switch on the wall which is the original from the 70's and is a combo on/off and dimmer. The first ceiling fan is somehow connected to the dimmer switch so the light is "sharing" power with the plain light at the other end of the ceiling. Will it all work itself out once I replace the ceiling light with the next ceiling fan?
Why are my self-installed flourecent light fixtures flickering all the time? I have typical flourecent "office fixture" ceiling lights. I'm replacing them with simple wall mounted, DIY fixtures and am using 13w spiral flourecent lights. I wired the first one and tested it. Worked just fine. Then I ran my wires to the second fixture, put it all together and tested it. Now the two bulbs to a little disco dance back and forth for a few minutes before they warm up. What is causing this and how can I work around it? Will lower wattage bulbs do it? I plan on installing another 2 fixtures on the other side of the room. What can I do?? I don't think it's a wiring issue. Here's what I did: Electrical box -> black wire -> rat tail -> black wire -> fixture -> white wire -> rat tail -> black wire -> rat tail -> black wire -> fixture -> white wire -> rat tail -> white wire -> electrical box What these guys are saying about series/parallel is it, I think. Problem is, I don't know how to make the wire go "through" a fixture, so to speak. If I join the black wire from the wall to the black wire from the fixture, which black wire to I connect to the next fixture? Do I need to combine 3 wire together? So, the wires come out of the wall inbetween the two fixtures. I have the black wire from the wall and the two black wires from the fixtures together. I have the white wire from the wall and the white wire from the fixtures all bound together. And now the bulbs are working fine. BUT it seems like there should be a better way. I have 2 more fixtures I would like to insert into the circuit. Where/How would I place them??
Changing light fixtures- why do I have an extra wire? I'm switching fixtures in my dining room and bedroom. The dining room has white-white, black-black and silver-ground. The bedroom has white-white, black-red, silver-ground and an extra black wire from the ceiling. What is the black wire for? Do I install the other light fixture and leave the black hanging? Or leave the red hanging? Or is this over my head? Please only answer if you KNOW. I'll take your word for it and get myself killed :). Thanks.
Trouble Wiring Fluorescent Light Fixtures? Need to install 2 fluorescent light fixtures on circuit controlled by wall switch. Each fixture has a separate ballast and 1 30w tube. Tried wiring the 2 fixtures in parallel (not in series) but tripped breaker each attempt; ensured that black wires were wired to black, and white to white; puzzled why this will not work; any electrician who can offer some explanation, solution, etc? Problem seems to defy the principles of basic home wiring??
Light fixtures-brushed nickel? Does anyone know if it's possible or have ever tried to paint brushed nickel to say a bronzed/aged iron like texture? I'm looking to save money so instead of buying all new light fixtures was hoping that it'd be possible to paint them. Thanks for any advise. Can't seem to find anything w/an online search.
Can you put compact flourecent light bulbs in light fixtures? I noticed on the bulb it says "WARNING: DO NOT USE IN ENCLOSED RECESSED LIGHT FIXTURES." i guess im not exactly sure what an "enclosed recessed fixture" is (im guessing an enclosed fixture that goes back into the ceiling?) is it safe to put it in one of those hallway glass dome-looking light fixtures?
New Apartment, Old light fixtures, need a change? I just moved in to an old old apartment with hideous light fixtures everywhere. Is it going to be way to much of an investment to replace them if I'm just renting, and how do I go about changing these things if I want to?

HELP!! I need to know about light fixtures...? Okay, I am moving into this older house and I don't want to have to do any rewiring with the lights. Most of these are pull string, and like you see in closets with the bulb exposed on the ceiling. Do they make fixtures for lights like that anymore, like something I can screw around it, or attach to the bulb itself. Please help
