Basement Remodeling Questions

Basement remodeling? Does anyone know of any good home contractor in MD? How much would it cost to renovate basement of 500 square feet. I would like to renovate existing bath by replacing upright shower, install new sink, replace toilet and put dry wall and door to separate from the laundry room and also carpet the floors. Is $5000 or under reasonable?
remodeling basement, exterior walls and electrical circuit.? I am remodeling my basement. The current exterior walls are 2x2 nailed to block and covered with sheetrock. I plan to add a 2x4 'bumpout' against the old 2x2 along the entire exterior walls that will be 36" high. The problem is if I do this the electrical wires in the the old boxes will not meet regulation of <=6" and <= 3" extending beyond the box. Can I abandon the old 15a electrical circuit (disconnect) and run a new circuit though the bumpout and new boxes I will install or can I not run electrical circuits through a partial wall?
Need Help With Remodeling A Basement? I'm thinking of renting a friends basement. It needs a lot of work though, I'm a very organized, neat freak person and the basement is a train wreck. The bathroom doesn't work, there's a couple doors missing, everything needs painting, tiled, and carpeted. It needs also needs new cabniets. Plus the BIGGEST problem is, we seen a snake down there a couple weeks ago, and I have no idea how to get it out. So all in all, what i need to know is how much/how long do you think it will take to get this place ready to live in?? Should I ask her if I can get months free for fixing it up?? How do i get rid of the snake? PLEASE HELP ME..I'm going crazy.
Can you give me an estimate for remodeling my basement? I live in northeast Pennsylvania and I want to completely refinish my basement. The walls are about 7.5 ft high. It's an L-shaped basement. I want: 1. All new drywall on the walls and ceiling. 2. About 600 sq. ft. of carpet with pad. (this includes the stairwell). 3. About 40 sq. ft. of tile. 3. Moulding to go around the edge of the walls. 4. 2 new doors. (A lighter one that goes to a closet and a heavier duty one to the garage). 5. 2 vinyl windows. (One sliding window about 3ft x 3ft and one small rectangular basement window). 6. A new electrical box. 7. Recessed lights (I'm estimating 16- 6" lights). 8. Paint. These items will be moderately priced quality- not high end stuff.
when remodeling a basement, would you use carpet or hardwood? Because basements can sometimes get damp, i don't know if carpet is a good idea. But also for the same reason, would the wood shift if it became damp? What do you think works best both for practicality and also for future re-sale?

Finishing a basement...? So our family is going to finish the basement...by ourselves, because mainly it will cost less and we are pretty good at building/doing stuff. We bought a really good book on remodeling basements but I would like to know if any one has had experience in finishing a basement they did on there own. So if you have finished your basement do you have any good tips?
If you got radon at 3.3 pCi/l in your best bedroom, in the newly remodeled basement, should you freak out? We're not sure whether to freak out. We did the 72-hr tests in two locations, one in our gorgeous new basement bunker bedroom with high ceilings, and one in the computer/entertainment room next to it, both rooms now so gorgeous my wife heaves a sigh of adoration, or whatever... What? Oh yes, we got 3.3 and 3.2 and we don't know whether to freak out. We've never smoked, and to die of lung cancer would be a total embarrassment, nicht wahr?

Trying to remodel a basement.. Math question I need answered though!!? So my mother and I are trying to redo a basement and we thought it would be fun to close off part of the basement with shower curtains. Well here is my dilemma: The width of the area we want to close off is 13ft. we found crescent shaped shower curtains on the website listed below but they are for a 5ft. bath so if we bought 3 crescent shaped rods that would be 15ft am I right or does it change the length since there is a crescent shape in the rods? Help please! How many rods do i need and will 3 rods fit? I need to understand the math!?...Confused... Here is the website for details/measurements: www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1433779&cp=1331604.1331614.1331933&parentPage=family Create extra space in your shower with the Cresent Rodâ„¢ curved shower rod. The rod curves 3 inches inward at the corners to help prevent leaks and 6 inches outward in the middle for extra space. The rod is perfect for use with oval tubs and uses a standard shower curtain. Features Offers extra space and comfort Curves 3 in inward at the corners to stop leaks Curves 6 in outward in the middle, beyond the tub's rim, for extra space For 5-ft standard and oval tubs Uses regular shower curtain I want to connect all 3 rods to make an even bigger crescent so will that change the diameter?
Basement insulation:? I live in Chicago and I'm currently remodeling my basement. I've had the floor acid stained a few weeks ago and I'm almost ready for drywall. Three fourths of the basement is below grade and I will drywall the walls and ceiling in the entire basement except the laundry which will have a drop ceiling. My question is this...How much insulation should I use and should I also include insulation in the ceiling? How about a moisture barrier as well?
We want to remodel our basement ourselves... Is there? Is there a way we can find blueprints or a layout for the floorplan already made with out having to have an interior decorator or basement specialist come in and do it for us to help us best utilize the space? for basement wall, which one is better, sherock or wall panel? I am remodeling the basement, and will like to hear some suggestion from yours, for its wall, which one is better, sherock or wall panel? I kown sherock will be more economic sound, but will need extra step for paste, primer, paint, wall panel looks nice, but since the basement has the lower ceiling, the wall panel looks a little bit too crowded. I like some kind of material which is strong, light, don't need too much work, better to be paintable. Thanks.
Band Room/Basement Romodel/Ceiling Insulation? I am remodeling my basement, and I want to keep my basement sound proofed (to atleast a low rumble) because I will keep band practice with drummer/bass/guitars the whole bit. I've sound proofed my walls and subflooring. I was going to use Suspended Ceilings for how cheap it was, but I don't know how practical that would be with putting heavy insulation to proof it from upstairs. Will the acoustic ceiling be able to hold the weight of the heavy insulation? Am I forced to lose ceiling space and money with ceiling joices and plywood? Any other idea are welcome! Thanks!
can I open two or three more ducts in basement? I am remodeling the basement, and I can see the duct pipe was run through the basement ceiling, as far as I can imagine, it should not be too hard to open the duct from the pipe. Here I have two questions. 1. should I open the ducts (2 or 3) for basement (heating and cooling), what kind of measurement I should consider before I do it, please refer me to URL you think may help me to caculate. 2. is there a good URL which tell DIYer how to open the ducts from the main duct pipe. Please share me with your experience or give me some suggestions. Thanks.
We need a name for our new basement bar......? We are in the process remodeling our basement and are making a bar out of half of it. We want it to portray a fun, home away from home, cozy, watering hole type feel. It is small and intended to be a place for our family and friends to come sing karaoke, play darts pool and cards, watch the games and have a few drinks. Most of us like country and classic rock music, the outdoors. We are using natural, burnt, and stained woods, bamboo and sugarcane. Our names are Jim and Kerri, he calls me his Genie, and when I am talking about us, I say Jim-and-I (sounds like Gemini) Any good Ideas for a name? Nothing crude, we have 3 teanagers and an 8 year old. Thanks for your help!!

Basement ceilings - paint them, drywall them or put up drop ceilings? My husband and I are ready to tackle the basement and finish remodeling it - we already have it framed. Our biggest debate right now is how to finish the ceiling. One part of me wants to drywall it but my husband hates that idea, because maintenance in the future could suck.... I get that. I personally hate the loook of a drop ceiling. Should we paint the basment ceiling white, as it is, and go with a contemporary look? Would that be a good compromise? Can I still achieve a great finished look that way or would it look cheesy? So you are all saying painting the ceiling as is - it's a bad idea?

Has anyone ever seen a laundry room/bathroom combo in a basement before? We have a split foyer home and have since done some remodeling in the basement. We didn't put in the bathroom at the time but now we are thinking of doing so. Trouble is, the walls we put in for the office are cramping the size of the bathroom because the plumbing for the toilet and sink are between the wall and the washer and dryer. There isn't much room left but I think a small powder room could be put there. My husband and my uncle suggested boxing in the laundry room and making it a combo-room and having the bathroom in that room with the washer and dryer, no wall just all together since there is limited space. Putting in walls would make the bathroom more cramped. So just having a toilet and sink put in as if it were a bathroom but leaving it open to the rest of the laundry room. Maybe putting up a "hospital" type curtain on a track to provide some privacy but that would be it. Has anyone ever seen this done before? I would think it wouldn't do well for resale.

Ugly basement....What do I do?? I live in an old house built in 1884...have remodeled everything but the basement. Not much ceiling height, but you can see the floor beams and pretty much have to duck if you are over 6'2". Floors are concrete and walls are concrete blocks? (I think) No moisture or foundation problems. (I have had contractors verify) Just ugly. I need to sheet rock and insulate for the ceiling I think, as a drop ceiling is too much space. But what to do with the walls and floors. Can this be sheet rocked? Paneled? What about the floors? Should I just paint the whole thing and call it a day? Help.
