Kitchen Cabinets Questions
Kitchen Cabinets? Anyone have any creative or unusual ideas for kitchen cabinets? I will be replacing the cabinets in my kitchen soon (very small, btw), and I do not want traditionally built cabinets. I will be building them myself, and I am looking for unique and creative materials to build them out of. I just want something different. I don't mean how they are painted, what kind of trim or hardware, the style or type of doors, etc. I am talking about building materials. I particularly like the old style metal cabinets, but they are hard to come by (at least at a reasonable price). One idea was to refinish old school lockers, but I am still looking for other ideas. Kitchen Cabinets? Need some help. Just got a house and the previous owner painted the kitchen cabinets black. The drawers and doors are painted a beige color. How do I paint over the black? (They also painted the back of a bedroom door black too!) Can I sand down the cabinets and get all the paint off, or should I just try to cover them. They painted the walls in the kitchen a sage green and put up a border with grapes on it. :( I would like it to all be either white or back to the natural wood. Any suggestions?
Kitchen Cabinets? I am starting to re-do my kitchen in a house I just purchased and I'm looking to put in some kitchen cabinets. I was wondering if there was anywhere to purchase discount cabinets. I have been looking around at local stores and they are very expensive. Any help would be appreciated.
Kitchen Cabinets? I have a 50+ year old house. In the kitchen I have the original cabinets on the wall, that are solid oak. The cabinets are showing their age. Some of the joints are seperating. I am a handiman by choice. My question is this, has anyone ever sucsessfully removed wall cabinets, reglued the joints, refinised (we're thinking a painted enamel surface) and rehung them. Please no smart butt answers. I already know I can have them refaced or replaced.

I was wondering if anyone ever used punch tin or ceiling tin for panels of kitchen cabinets if so do you like it seen some great ceiling tin that would look nice in place of the old wooden inserted panel in my cabinets thought i may try it if anyone has used it let me know if you liked it or not
kitchen cabinets? I have some older friends who dont have a lot of money to spend. When they wanted to buy new cabinets for their kitchen, they shopped carefully for prices. Decided on a store that advertises low price, about 200 miles away. They drove out there, got the cabinets. Store wouldnt deliver so far away. Countertop for one section did not get loaded into their truck. They had to make a special trip back, to pick it up, at their own expense. Store said it was their fault for not noticing it wasnt loaded on truck. Now this piece is inches too short. They need another one. Store insists they have to pay for both. That it was their own mistake to have taken the first countertop out of the store without noticing it was cut to wrong size. What kind of recourse do they have? Remember, they don't have much money.
kitchen cabinets? Well I'm wanting to stain my kitchen cabinets. Right now they have a light color stain on them and we are going to make them darker. My question is do I have to sand all the old stain off or can I just sand the clear coat off and stain over that. Thanks for your help.

kitchen cabinets? Has anyone ever redone the panels of kitchen cabinets mine are like inserts and i dont like them thought about taking them out replaceing with somthing like steel mesh, cloth Etc.. if anyone has any ideas i would be so greatful they are like frames with a panel inserted in the back well they are just ungly and need to go Please help let me now your thoughts and what sounds good to use
Kitchen Cabinets...? What is the current trend in kitchen cabinets? Cherry-dark brown? Medium brown? What about countertops? To answer the question about my preferences - I like both medium and dark brown cabinets. If I re-do my kitchen, I want to make sure I don't date it too much (install items that are on their way out already)

advice on kitchen cabinets? We have a small (long and narrow) area, with the family area on one end, and the kitchen on the other. The family area has a cherry entertainment unit built into the wall. On the other end, our kitchen cabinets are standard oak. The floor is light beech Pergo. Walls are off-white. Do we: - leave the kitchen cabinets as is, and put some decorative elements (e.g. vases or flowers) in "cherry" colors to somehow balance with the big block of cherry wood on the other side of the room? - change the kitchen cabinets to match the cherry entertainment unit (our kitchen is small with one window -- cherry might be too dark and make the space seem smaller?) - change the kitchen cabinets to match the light beech floor? - paint the kitchen cabinets to white, light yellow, something close to the cherry, or some other color? - paint the walls? - other suggestions?
Kitchen cabinets !!! please advice? I wanted to know what color kitchen cabinets is adviisable for a medium sized kitchen in which a lot of greasy food will be cooked DAILY. The cabinets the builder is providing are 42 inches long and there are a lot of them in the kitchen. The kitchen has one window and a walk out door( to the back yard). I do not want the to get a dark feeling in the kitchen with very darl colors and I also hate white. Thanks.
Kitchen Cabinets and Water Damage? My kitchen and living room got flooded while I was out of town for 2 days. The insurance doesnt want to pay for new kitchen cabinets, they claim they will be fine since they went through a drying process. I believe this will become an issue after a few months with potential mold and the cabinets becoming warped. My question is, what type of affect did this whole deal have on the integrity of my cabinets? Are they going to be junk, or will they be fine? Note, the water damage was so severe all the subfloor in the kitchen and half of it in the living room must be replaced.
Suggestions for kitchen cabinets (color and style). ??? In the stages of designing the kitchen for our new home. It is a galley style kitchen. The dining area extends past the kitchen area and I don't want to put any type of bar for eating on the ends of the cabinets. I feel this will only close the area. Since the kitchen/eating and greatroom are an open floor plan, I will be using hardwood through this entire area. I am leaning toward the french cream with a glaze. It will be a small kitchen. So my cabinets will have to be designed to utilize space very efficiently. I will not be able have many upper wall cabinets, and I would like to use glass doors on a few doors to "dress-up" the look. If you can suggest a website to design a kitchen, that would be great. (not the hgtv one, it doesn't help me) Countertop colors??? I will probably use a granite.
Kitchen cabinets are pulling away from the wall? My kitchen cabinets are starting to pull away from the wall slightly and I'm wondering how I should fix it. Now, the cabinets are fastened to the wall in the back and it's my far left corner cabinet that is pulling away from the side wall that's the issue. There is a 1.5" gap between the side wall and my cabinet, but the front face of the cabinet extends to the wall and it's 3/4" thick. It's this front portion that has a slight gap between itself and the wall. It used to be flat against the wall and in fact the top still is, it's the bottom portion that has a gap. How can I fix this?
Should the kitchen cabinets go all the way to the ceilings with crown? will this make the kitch. too small? It is a 10 x 10 kitchen in one part of an L shaped kitchen. The middle of the L is a breakfast nook. The other end of the L is a large pantry. The frig is in the breakfast nook area. So the cooking area is a U shape with 10' ceilings. Moving the frig also allows for all countertop in the U. We picked a light maple cabinet. Should they go to the ceiling? or should we select 36" cabinets and have space between the cabinet and ceiling? This is a 50 year old home. The floor is white ceramic tile. The next room is the dining room with beautiful dark parquet flooring. Since the kitchen is small we chose light maple but I was also wondering about a darker maple with a chocolate glaze in keeping with the dark flooring of the dining room. What do you see in my kitchen? Will this be a big mistake or am I on the right track? Oops - It is an 8' ceiling!
Kitchen cabinets and sockets? I' m preparing to move into a flat and the kitchen has no wall cabinets. I'm thinking of fitting some myself, but the available wall space has 4 different plug sockets. I've heard that you shouldn't (or can't) drill above sockets. Is there another way I can have cabinets? The kitchen is very small so I need as much storage space as possible.
Depth of Kitchen top cabinets? I just had kitchen cabinets installed. The inside of the wall cabinets is just 11 inches deep, and the back of the cabinet is 5/8 inches. Two problems for me: one, some of my dishes won't fit. I had 12 inches of space in my old cabinets. two: the range hood will stick out under the cabinets, as range hoods I have seen are 12 inches deep. Is there a standard for wall cabinets? I hate to have them redone and waste all that work and wood. What can I do?
Painting Kitchen Cabinets? I'd like to repaint the white kitchen cabinets in my new house. I suspect these have a coat of 50's green underneath several coats of white. I'd like to go with a darker "woodier" color. Should I paint them, or stain them? [I don't want to replace due to insufficient resources - otherwise I'd gut the kitchen] What are the steps to follow in painting or staining? I have read that I need to be stripping the paint, or at minimum, sanding the top coat. But, I realize that I would need to completely strip the paint to stain (and, is staining possible on these types of cabinets)?
replacing kitchen cabinets and countertops? i wish to replace my kitchen countertops and cabinets it is a small kitchen and i do not want top dollar stuff, but i also dont want the cheapest stuff out there. Installing Our Own Kitchen Cabinets (?) Please? We're thinking about buying the oak stained cabinets from Lowe's. I've just one question though, that is, I'd like to have a cabinet with 2 large pull out pot and pan drawers. This is a cabinet that would probably be custom made from Lowe's but we can't afford to have one built. We need to use stock cabinets. Is there a way and hardware that we could use on one of the base cabinets from Lowe's and design this feature ourselves? Thanks and I hope somebody has already did this for their kitchen.
How much to build my own Kitchen cabinets? We just bought a home and i hate the kitchen cabinets. My husband and his bestfriend can build about anything so i'm wanting to see what the price would be to build them ourselves. We are spending a lot in other areas of the house like adding on additons so i dont want to spend a huge amount in the kitchen. Originally we were going to just paint the existing ones, but its an older home and i just want a fresh look. Its not a very big kitchen at all. Please help! Does my kitchen floor has to match my kitchen cabinets? I have salem oak kitchen cabinets and we're trying to redo our kitchen floor with laminate flooring. Does my floor has to match my kitchen cabinets? Would it look weird if I went with something other than oak? I personally really like the very light maple floor. But I have a feeling it might not go together so well with my cabinets and my island. But also I don't really like the idea of plain oak either. Can't decide!! Please help!
Ugly kitchen cabinets in apartment, what can we do? We have a beautiful apartment, except for the kitchen. The cabinets are a light oak color, and the doors (on the cabinets) are like a white fermicca (sp?). Any ideas to liven it up a bit? We can't paint and I don't want to glue anything to them. Did I mention the counter top is cream?? I like the tiled plywood idea... Unfortunately there is no hardware to spice up and we live in a complex where every kitchen is the same ugly design :(
Painting kitchen cabinets? I read from another asker, she said she wanted to paint her kitchen cabinets white then put a dark glaze over it to give that expensive look... i was thinking of doing that also... i read about that somewhere else and thaught that would be a better alternative for me to paint my cabinets (bc replacing them is really expensive). Well the look i was trying to do for is a maple or oak look and when i read that article it kind of gave me an idea on how to do that... I was wondering if any one has ever tried it? Did it come out good? What kinds of white paint and glaze should i use? What kind of paint brush? things like that..... Or if anyone has a different idea that i could use, i would also appreciate that.
Ordering Kitchen Cabinets? Want to order cabinets at a Kitchen Design place. Do I need to measure my kitchen exactly or can they give me rough estimate based on layout 10x13, and will they do an accurate measure onsite... or do i need my own installer to do this?
cost of kitchen cabinets in Las Vegas? I need to redo the kitchen cabinets for my rental property in Las Vegas. This is my first time having to redo a kitchen and I'm not sure how much something like this costs. I want something basic since it is a rental, no granite counters or anything. Any ballpark figures before I fly in to find estimates? The kitchen is very average sized.
How will my kitchen cabinets look like this? We can't afford new cabinets and we want to lighten our kitchen cabinets. They are stained a dark brown color. We plan to prime and paint whether we do just the doors or all of the cabinets. We considered leaving the cabinets the brown color they are now and painting the doors off-white/cream. Kitchen Cabinets - Painting? My kitchen cabinets are very solid and a nice looking design I think, but they are probably 20 years old. I don't know exactly what these are "painted" with, but it looks like it's some sort of baked on enamel or something. It definitely wasn't brush painted. Let me say that if I were offering to sell you a Kitchen that was prefinished in a beautiful choise of Cherry, Maple or Oak, and thus chooiseing one of these would take down your waiting time of your kitchen 1/2, would you choose this or rather be picky about your finish? How many would buy a Prefinished Custom Kitchen from me and Howmany would rather have a chosen finish? May I also remind you that my Quailty of cabinets is strong and sturdy with no partical board.
Paint suggestions to paint kitchen cabinets white? Hi, I am planning on painting my kitchen cabinets white, but am unsure of what color white I should use. I hope to paint the walls a neutral off-white color also, but with sections under my chair-rail in the adjacent dining area and the soffet over my cabinets in sage. The trim will be bright white and I hope to eventually install an oak floor, tropical brown granite countertops, and I will be updating the cabinet hardware with satin nickel. Also, the cabinets are currently an off white or beige. In fact, the whole room is a beige, It's not a nice beige- more like a dirty cream color (cabinets, walls, trim, and ceilings). I think the cabinets are original (1956), but overall they are in good shape. I would love to buy new cabinets too (in a stained spice color), but expense wise, I'm thinking the re-finishing white is the way to go. I am having two kitchen cabinets installed on the top and two on the bottom with a counter top about 15 inches long along the existing two cabinets on top and two cabinets on the bottom. having a light switch moved. I am buying the kitchen cabinets myself and if the carpenter installs it after he puts it together, he says he will charge labor only $750.00 do u think it's high? please help me...i dont' want to get ripped off. Are carpenters more expensive to use for installing cabinets? What is the going rate for a Handyman? Is $75.00 an hr a lot? cause that's what Handyman matters is charging...help..any handymen out there? What color should I paint my kitchen cabinets? I am getting unfinished cabinets so that I can paint them. My kitchen is a blank slate, I just don't know what to do! I have hardwood floors, lots of windows. I don't even know what color to paint my walls. I would like to have some color in my cabinets, I want them to be fun, but elegant. We live in the country in SC and my house is a little cottage (picket fence and all) Colors I already have in my kitchen are: my china is pink, my Kitchenaid is a pale yellow, my hoosier cabinet has some green in it. I really am a country type person, so modern looks like "black and white" won't work! I would like to use several colors if possible, and I will be doing some distressing. glazing mdf kitchen cabinets? I have mdf kitchen cabinet doors and like the antiqued look of glazed cabinets. I want an antiqued white look. Can I glaze even if there is no "wood grain"?
antique kitchen cabinets? i have a set of kitchen cabinets out of a 1871 farmhouse they are in very good shape however i dont know what the counter top looks like because its covered in some type of tile, i have a guy that may be interested but i dont know how much they are worth. can anyone give me a rough estamate of what something this age might go for? oh yes it does have paint on it it look like a good 3 coats. sorry 13 +
How can I improve on a kitchen with white cabinets? I'm moving into my first home (I had been taking care of my mother in her house for many years). So finally I'm buying my first house. I'm very excited but not so much in love with the kitchen cabinets and can in no way remodel the kitchen for at least 3 or 4 years at the earliest. All of my kitchen and dining room furniture is medium oak and I do love its quality and durability. I hate the whole kitschy looking farmhouse white and oak thing that was popular in the 90s. It was fun back then but I don't want it now. What can I do? I was hoping to put crown moulding over the cabinets but I see that the cabinets on the outside wall go right to the ceiling. Any ideas on how to tackle this on a budget?
Painting kitchen cabinets...? Ill be painting my kitchen cabinets white and then applying a light mocha glaze over the white. Hopefullly they will look like the expensive ones you see at lowes. How do I apply the galze to get that professional look? What type of brush? And what type of clear drying varnish do I use for the last step? Oh yeah, and the type of sand paper to get them that smooth texture? THNX
