Home Improvement Diy Questions

Home Improvement, DIY? I am in the process of purchasing a new home, (2,300 sq ft 3bdrm 2ba) of which I want to do a few DIY improvements. I want to paint the living room, halls, and 2 of the bedrooms, and to add shutters and shrubs to the outside of the home. Does anyone know an estimate of how much it will run me? And the cheapest ways to go? Also I want to add wall to wall carpet to about 1,900 of the sqft (this will be done professionally as I am 4 months pregnate and cant fathom doing it myself at 7 months which is when I plan to do the remodeling.)

Floating Walls? I live in SW Minnesota, and am planning to finish my basement. I have been researching this subject online, and have come across floating walls. The sites say that because of the large temperature changes, floating walls are necessary to prevent damage to walls or foundations when the concrete moves (due to the temp changes). I have asked numerous people in the area about floating walls, including someone who used to do carpentry. I included a link to one of the wesites I read below. Does anyone know if this is necessary, or common in SW Minnesota? Any experience with floating walls? http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/home_improvement/article/0,2037,DIY_13954_5024566,00.html The people I talked to had not heard of floating walls.
Is Harlem really like this? I recently saw a DIY home improvement show that profiled three black men and their apts. I always viewed Harlem as being a poor, rundown, dangerous, black community, but the men and the houses were quite the opposite. These men were very highly educated, appeared to have alot of money, and actually spoke more sophisticated than most white people I know (I'm white, too). I apologize to the masses for having been so stereotypical about Harlem, but is Harlem really better than it's portayed, or have I just really been in the clouds? I'm not from there nor have I ever been there, but I honestly always thought it was a dump. Go ahead, bash me for whatever reasons you like, I deserve it. I'd just like to say that show really opened my eyes. They were in Sugar Hill area. Is that an upscale area?

How can I get revenge on my neighbours? Me and my girlfriend are moving out of our flat because we cant stand the noise of our neighbours any more. We tried everything including calling the council on them but they keep waking us up in the night with loud music, DIY home improvements etc. I want to leave them with a little "present" to say how much we will miss them. Any suggestions?

I am thinking about adding a bungalow to my property....? I've found a plan for a bungalow which matches the architectural style of my house very well and will add approx. 480 sq ft of living space to the total property. We live in a semi-mature neighborhood with property prices in the 180s to 240s and square footage from 1700 to 3000. Spatially and from a landscaping perspective, the bungalow would work well in my backyard and still leave me a large, grassy area for baby #1 (here) and baby #2 (planned) to play in. I'd use the bungalow for an office and guesthouse. The approximate total cost is about $50K. I purchased my house for $146K and it has been appraised at $156K. We've made some very cost-effective, DIY improvements in the home and it is architecturally in line with the higher value homes in the neighborhood. This addition would bring my total living area to approx. 2000 sq ft. My question is...financially, would this addition make sense? All opinions and thoughts would be appreciated!!
Anyone addicted ? To HGTV, DIY or any other home decorating/improvement show? Did it make you try things on your home that you were scared to do before.
For Do-it-yourselfers...(not sexual)? What significant thing happened in the Do-it-yourself/hardware industry in the early 90's up to the present. My information, dating only up to late 80s, says that "homeowners continue to renovate their houses with an eye to the past. Home improvement now refers to renovations as well as modernization" after the VCRs, which were used by DIY companies to demonstrate their products, were invented.
Wall is uneven (#2) - how do I fix it? I am doing some DIY in my bathroom. My ex wasn't a bundle on home improvements so the bathroom has only been decorated once in 20 years; even then, it has not been stripped right back...until now! I am finding all sorts of things but my question is about a bowed wall. The wall is uneven - it bows outwards slightly. Not much but, because I want to partially tile the wall, it needs fixing. It's a partician wall, partly made of plasterboard, partly made of wood (I kid you not!). Not particularly well made either but there you go! What is the best way to even this wall up? (And please do not suggest expensive wall replacement - I am on a finite budget and cannot afford to do this!)...
Where would you buy pvc tubing online? I'm trying to construct a silk for photography. Where would you buy something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ruimleal/1513934843/ http://lightingmods.blogspot.com/2007/10/diy-soft-light-panel-small-improvements.html Ruimeal lists a european supplier and i'd prefer to buy tubing online from a US supplier. I've tried home depot too they don't have the type of tubing i'm looking for thats like the ones in the picture.
