Roofing Questions

Roofing question!? A section of my roof is over a screened in porch. The porch is on footings so I have added windows and a new door to make it a year round living space. The slope on this section of the house is less than 3/12 and there is a rolled roof on it. I heard that when the roof is less than 3/12 rolled roofing is necessary. I want to add skylights and a new roof. I am in Wisconsin. If I put down strips of ice and water shield and overlap them across the roof from the bottom up could I then possibly shingle over that.
Metal roofing on flat roof??? Dear, I am a Store owner located in Mechanicsburg,PA. We have flat roof over our store and I guess its old can i replace it with metal roofing??? We have all HVAC equipments on the roof, whats the best way to put a new roof, my store is 2100 sq ft I need estimates from roofing contractors
Can you use siding on a roof with a normal pitch, instead of roofing materials? We are putting a new roof on our garage and doing the work ourselves. We want to put on a metal roof as we did on our house a few years ago. However, I would like to find something more decorative than just the plain metal roof, since the garage & roof are in close proximity to our deck and is very visible from the house. We looked into the new metal shakes, etc., but they are very costly. So before we just give up and go with the plain metal roofing sheets, I was wondering if we could find some decorative siding (vinyl, etc) and put it on the roof instead of the sheets of plain metal roofing. The roof will be going over an existing shingle roof that is starting to lose a lot of it's shingles. Would the siding be able to shed water, snow, etc. like a metal roof would? We live in Indiana. What do you think?
Roofing costs? Currently, I live in a house that has a flat tar & gravel roof, which is laid directly over the tongue & groove cedar that is also the ceiling. Just before we moved in three years ago, the landlord had the roof re-done. Every year that we have lived here, the roof has leaked when it rains. I have been trying to convince the landlord that he should add on a vaulted roof, but I understand that this will be more expensive than just adding more tar & gravel, except for the fact that he wouldn't have to re-do it every year. My husband and I started talking this weekend, and realized that foam is another potential option. Does anyone know what the relative costs are for all of these roofing options per square foot? I realize that it may differ in my area, but if you know the cost of each within your own geography, could you please share? I'd like to make a proposal to the landlord that has facts to back it up. So, for the record, I'm looking for costs here. I know that the overall project will require knowing the total square footage. Just hoping to get a per-square-foot cost comparison, if anybody knows.
What type of roofing should I use to replace current roof? I need to replace my current roof. My roof is a flat type roof and I was wondering which type of roofing I should replace it with? Should I use the modified bitumen or the built in roofing with tar/gravel. Which type would last the longest and easy to maintain? I've been experiencing some leaks and molding in the house and the roof is in bad condition.
Did my roofing contractor make a mistake? I needed some eavetroughing after my roof was put on and the eavetroughing contractor stated that I did not have a 'drip edge'. I was told by the eavetroughing contractor that the the roofing contractor should have advised me of this before going ahead and putting the roof on because it would now be incredibly difficult to install the drip edge. Should I have been advised of this by the roofing contractor before he threw on the new roof?
a question about roofing warrenties? i bought my house 5 years ago knowing it had a new roof put on 2 years before I was fortunate enough that the guy who owned the house before be left 10 years worth of paper work that was done to the house and when the roof was done it had a 10 yr warrenty on workmanship? where they repaired a leak above my kitchen and 20 years on the roofing materials. well 3 years ago the roof started leaking in the same spot again so this was 4 years after the original job was done to stop the leak. So with warrenty in hand i called the roofing company and at that time the lady told me she didnt know if it was covered becasue we were new owners and she would call me back with a responce never heard back from her now its been 3 years and 20 phone calls later and ive gone nowhere wit this place what do i do about them??? since im a new owner can i sue to have it fixed since i bought the house assuming it had a good roof or do i pay someone to come and fix it and chalk it up as a loss???
Doing half rubber half shingle roofing.? I have a 1969 house and the back side of the roof has a very flat pitch. I talked to a roofer that did his mom's house up the street, which is the same style as mine, and did rubber roof on the backside where it is less then the 2 inch rise/ft for shingles. I later read more on rubber roofing and I know that the petrolium in the asphalt shingles would destroy the epmd rubber if they touched but is there a proper way to make a seam at the roof cap to go from rubber on the flat backside to the cap and have asphalt front side? The roof is leaking in several places and did a lot with one bad snow storm that caused ice damming on the flat side. I was told a rubber roof would pretty much solve that problem. I have vaulted exposed beam ceilings with no attic and no insulation cavity so heat loss is excessive. I have also been searching for solutions to increase the R value of the roof. Right now all thats there is the birch on the inside, 2 inch buffalo board, then the shingles.
In roofing, what is "lath" and what is "sheathing"? My roofer says lath repair will be billed extra. When we bought our old home, our home inspector said that we needed a new roof. It has two layers of shingles nailed into cedar wood (not cedar shingles). He said they used to use cedar in the old days, but no roofer would reuse the cedar. So the whole roof repair would be a tear off of the shingles and wood beneath. We have a good contractor, but I'm not sure I understand his estimate and whether he understands that there is cedar that needs to be removed (a complete tear off) - although we told him that. Here's his estimate below - what does this mean in layman's terms? "Remove all existing roofing to lath, repair lath if needed and install 7/16" OSB sheathing, #15 roofing felt and 30 year dimensional asphalt shingles with rollvent ridgevent. Includes cleanup and disposal of debris. It also says "Lath repair will be billed extra." That's what makes me wonder - what is "lath"? That's not the cedar that needs to be removed is it? The cedar is the sheathing?

What are the different types of roofing projects that exist? I have a roof that I want to get some work done on but I'm confused as to how many types of standard roofing projects exist. My roof doesn't have any structural issues, leaks or problems that I know of at this time. Howver I think it was patched at some point because there are some shingles that are of a different color. I have heard so many different types of roofing work that I am confused? What are the different ways that a roof is worked on and how do different roofing projects differ from each other (longevity, cost, time frame for work)?
Brand new roof or re-roofing with molding problem ? My house was built in 1986, about 3000 sqft, 2 story and colonial style. I noticed some black stains on the roof and was told that it was molding. No leaks(maybe not yet ?) and no shades or tall trees around. When I got roofers for an estimate, some said it's ok with re-roofing meaning putting new shingles over the exiting ones. Others said they need to take out the old and put down the new shingles. Can I have your expert advice on this ? Thanks.
Asphalt shingle roofing question? I am going to shingle the front half of my house. To cap the top of the roof, I am going to use 1/3 shingles. The problem is that the shingles do not flex if it is not warm outside. I live in South Dakota, and it's still chilly. How do I bend the shingles without them cracking? Also, do I use a lot of roofing cement at the roof cap?

Roofing Finance? Is there any roofing companys that will finace a roof?
Other than a silver roofing coat for my MH, can Black Jack Roof MH coating (oil based alum.) be used? There is an old 5 gal.can about 1/2 full of a silver substance that the former owner left outside my shed but the label is all coated which, I wonder if it's what is on the roof now. I am a 70 year old widow who bought the mobile home last August and a former roofing inspector mentioned last year that the roof should be sealed at the seams. I haven't been able to find anyone in Sonora, CA yet who has time or available ones who have given me a price less than $800. just to have it sealed at the seams. I don't know what the cost should be for a job like that either.

Roofing - drip edges, venting, etc.? I have hail damage and the insurance will be paying for a replacement roof. I am looking for a good roofing contractor in the Franklin/Nashville TN area. Also, if anyone has any insight on such things as drip edges. They seem to rarely be put on new houses yet the shingle manufacturers include them in their installation instructions. Are they really required? Any other gotchas or things to ask people that give bids to do work? Thanks.
Roofing question? Can water, if it stands long enough, seep through "roll roofing"? I assumed that it could not since it is seamless, but if it can, this will explain one of my roofing leaks.
I have a flat roof addition. The roof has roll roofing on top thats old and 2x6 rafters. The room is 15x15.? Can I remove the roll roofing and put 1/2 inch fiber insulation board and a rubber roof(epdm, firestone, john mansville)? I just wanted to make sure the weight would be supported. It has a drywall ceiling underneath.
does new plywood have termite (for re-roofing)? I am going to replace my roof and do a termite fumigation. What is the best / better sequence? The roofers all said to do the fumigation first. The termite companies said it does not matter, but mostly said to do the fumigation before re-roofing also. The roof will receive a layer of playwood, and I am not sure if it has some chance of carrying termite. Then, the termite would remain if I do the roof after fumigation (making the money spent less effective). Another option is to do the fumigation after the plywood is placed on the roof, but before the composite roof (note this type has no wood) goes on it. This would require coordination between the 2 contractors. Please help. Thank you.

DIY recommendations for low slope roofing.? The low slope roof of our guest house had a leak. I've removed the old roofing materials and replaced the damaged plywood. Now it is time to reroof but I have a hard time finding low slope roofing materials that a home owner can use. Homedepot sells roll material by Henry -specifically for low slope roofs- that is appealing but they don't sell Henry's `aqua prime' that this material calls for. I have yet to locate a store who either carries Henry's aqua prime (HE102) or has an alternative solution. Any recommendations for materials/methods are greatly requested. I'm located in Santa Cruz, CA. The roof slope is ~1/2" in 12". Aqua prime is used to prime the plywood before putting down the adhesive low slope roll material. Aqua prime takes the place of felt paper as used on regular slope roofs.
To roofing contractors: how much difference is there between a 15lb felt, 30lb felt, and/or water+ice shield? I am re-doing my roof with a roofing contractor, but I'm not sure what are the best options available. I want to know if a 15lb felt can do the same as a 30lb felt or a water and ice shield. Or, is one option better than another? How effective is a water and ice shield? What is the best, yet cheapest option?
When roofing a garage, does it matter which way the new boards go? Our garage roof had a lot of water damage so we have to replace the old boards. Does it matter which side of the plywood goes up - smooth or rough side? Any re-roofing tips would be appreciated, it's the first time doing it ourself.
Best roofing material for rain/snow protection? We live near Seattle. It rains a lot. It snows on occasion, not usually hard. Rarely, there are windstorms and we have lots of tall trees that like to drop their branches during such storms. Our roof has a pretty normal pitch. What roofing material would last the longest, require the least maintenance, be easy to repair, and really be the best damn investment into a home we plan to be in for a long time? Any articles you recommend we read? Thank you!
Me again wittering on about roofing tiles........? I've bid on some roofing tiles on ebay, havent paid for them yet, but its only £20 anyway, but the seller has sent me a sample which I have taken to a builders merchants, who tell me that they are fibre cement made to look like slate, and they DO look like slate, at a distance, and they are strong. They are about 30 years old, and the builders yard don't think they're asbestos. I like the look of them, I like the look of slate, but I've got a slate roof on my main roof, and they're breaking and falling all the time, and they get on my nerves! What should I do, I can get all the tiles I need to roof a big extension fo £20 Help, you roofers and builders out there, give me your opinions! Whoa, Tommy B, I have every intention of paying!!!! Whether or not I collect them I will pay... Just making sure Im doing the right thing.... gee whizz, who rattled your cage.................

Ondura Roofing - Is it any good? I am thinking about re-roofing my larger 2 story home with Ondura Roofing Tiles ... Is this stuff any good?
How should I proceed to repair paint, possibly roofing,? Just found out at a corner of one bedroom, there are painting cracks (an area of 1 foot by 1 foot almost fall out). It seems that it started from the celing. I can see water marks. Even some mold can be seen. When I look at the other area, I saw a long cracking line along the upper window frame as well. No sure whether it is due to too dry or too wet condition, but should not be related to the first one. I guess the roofing may got some damage from early storm or hail. Will this be covered by insurance (apparently too long after the incident)? Should I ask the insurance first or I let the roofing people to check whether they will file the claim for me. Should I leave the paint repair after the roof is checked to give the roofing people more clue? All in all, painting, roofing, insurance, where should i start first?
I am trying to find plastic or fiberglass ribbed roofing such as you use in porch or patio roofs? any ideas? We have a wood porch roof that is not steep enough and leaks when we have pouring rain, thought we might be able to use the other roofing material and save on not having to shingle and tar paper. Know we still have to change the pitch of the roof. Just cannot find the ribbed roofing at any of the home depots or lowes web sites. not sure of the name of this roofing. I went back to home depot and to abcroofing, still could not find, sent them an e-mail to see what it would be listed under.

How does one improve on 25mm polycarbonate conservatory roofing to give the same benefits as ordinary roof? Benefits to include constant shading from sun, warmth and heat retention during the winter months, since I do not require any lighting from the roof. My conservatory is well-built with ample provision for windows and doors. The only problem is with the roof - too much light at all times and heat from sun during summer, with extremely cold conditions in winter. I would be extremely grateful if there were to be simple ways of making the roof give the same satisfying conditions as ordinary roofing and ceilings. Extension was built to provide an extra living space for use all year round. all my contributors have offered very helpful and enlightenening suggestions. I am much better placed knowledge-wise now than before I started. Christopher C and Cunny have been very helpful. Thank you all
How many layers of roofing allowable in Az. on mobile homes prior to removal.? I've had two contractor quotes for removal and replacement of my mobile home roof. One states Az. law requires removal of old roof with only one layer while the other quotes Az. law allows two layers of roofing. This makes a difference in the over all costs. Please advise. Thank You.
Ideas for roofing? We found an old shack that we're making our clubhouse. There are hardly any shingles and there are gaps in the roof. I need a cheap way for roofing. Nothing fancy, just so when it rains we don't get wet. I was thinking nailing plywood on the inside.
Any opinions on Kentuckiana Roofing in Jeffersonville, IN? Brought a house and Kentuckiana Roofing put the roof on and has had to repair it 4 times in 7 months and it is still not fixed. I also brought the warranty (good for 25 years) for the roof when I brought the house but they charged me for the 4th visit. Just wanted to know about their business ethics. I am new to the area. Would like to learn of businesses that a person can trust.
Should I go back to roofing or get an office job again? They changed my schedule at work again and it is horrible. I hate working graves and weekends; it is not good for my social life. In any case I have a choice of going back to doing roofing and finishing my apprenticeship or looking for a managerial office job to make what I am making now (17/hr). The office job will take me longer to find. The roofing work is easy to find cuz I have a truck, my own tools and experience. I could go become a foreman at $30/hr eventually too, the only downside is that it is dangerous and the cold/rainy weather 1/3 -1/2 the year blows. On top of that I am in school for BS in Business Admin and should go back into the office world to make use of my degree once I graduate. On the other hand I hate to throw two years of apprenticeship in construction away when I am so close to finishing it. I know that the office thing is easier, but I have this gut feeling that the roofing is a good move, what to do? + I am proud to know a trade. My friends work at temp agencies and low end jobs. I like the fact that I can go in at 17-20/hr and have a skill. When people ask me what I do, I am proud to tell them I am a roofer. I am not proud telling them what I do now even though the money is good. Thanks, I am going to law school to become an attorney after undergrad but I need something that pays until then.

Looking for alternative roofing ideas for a trailer home.? Purchased an older(1990) Commodore trailer home and trying to fix it up for my kids and myself to live in. Don't think the roof was ever "coated'' and it has some rust spots which have resulted in leaks. I am looking to discuss alternative roofing solutions if anyone has any ideas or things they have tried, I would like to hear from you.
How do I locate a specific solar roofing material I saw before? Several months ago I saw, in Wall Street Journal/Asia, an article about an elderly American (?) who has a small company that produces solar electrical roofing material in rolls that can simply be cut to fit and applied to the roof of any building. It supposedly functions AS the roof in place of shingles or other roofing material and produces significant amounts of electricity. I can't remember the name of the company or the material and would appreciate learning the source/company/contact info for this product.
