Garage Cabinets Questions
Whats your opinion on Garage/Tools storage cabinets? Gladiator is a nice line, but expensive. I see they have a cheaper line called Gladiator Cadet. They look very similar to STACK ON. Does anyone know if they are made by the same company? I'd like to buy some garage style cabinets because a rolling tool box like Craftsman really won't work in my garage. Anyone know which brand(s) I should stay away from. You can't always believe the reviews that are posted on the companies web-sites. Thanks.
searching for garage storage cabinets and workbench? anyone know where to shop for affordable garage storage systems. I like units they sell at Sears by Craftsmen and Gladiator but they are out of my price range. I've checked Home Depot and Menards already. I don't want rubbermaid type. Converting garage to playroom? would you add a garage to this house for sale? We renovated an old 1910 house, from the ground up. UPSIDE to this house. It has 3 nice size bedrooms, and 3 full baths. A laundry area. large sunroom. the kitchen has light maple cabinets, with glass, and old-fashioned look to it. The house in itself is extreamly cute and cozy. It has a rap-around porch, and deck upstairs, and flagestone patiio outside, along with beautiful landscaping. THE DOWNSIDE. We have not upgraded the gargae, it is a single 1910 detaced garage. This house is located in a small town, 30 miles from a large city. We've had this house on the market for 7 months with many lookers. One wants to buy it, but cannot sell his home to buy ours. Another wants us to lower the price, we have already lowered it $20,000. QUESTION is: My husband and sons want to tear down the old garage and shed and build a new one. I think it will be a waste of money.\ WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Our realtor has told us that a garage is the biggest complaint, yet she says that we should not add one, as the house itself is adorable enough to buy for the one that wants it. * but she's a woman...ha, men like the garage. Our sons builds and sells homes in another state, thus says...it needs a garage also. The house is done by skilled carpenters, we did only the runt jobs. Every thing is nutural, not mixed with moderen and old. We kept the house very traditional. Both my husband and I are decorators, so we know that area very well. We have taken out and packed all unused and personal decorations and extra furniture and clothing and put them in storage.

I am turning my garage into a game room. What color should I paint the walls? I have a black pool table in it. The felt on the pool table is purple and I am going to put a black and white checker board design tile on the floor. I also have a couple of brown cabinets on the walls, would you leave them brown or paint them? If I should paint them, what color? Would you paint the garage door also? It is white. How can I get my cat to use the litter box. I have my litter boxes in the garage.? Ok I have the litter boxes in the garage in a dog cage butted up to the door with a doggie door so they are protected from the dogs harrassing them while they use the litter box but I have one cat who refuses to go out there he would rather go under the fish tank or behind the couch or at the base of the cat tree. GRRRRRR any suggesstions we are in the process of boarding up the back of the fish tank and lockin gup the cabinets cause he actually opens the cabinets instead of walking thru the back that is open(dingbat) He is a great cat and very sweet but I can't steam clean every day. i have the litter boxes outside in the garage because I have 3 cats and dont want the smell, I cant put it outside any where cause they are STRICTLY indoor cats the other two use it no problem I think he has never been trained to use one because we took in him and his sister and his sister used to pee right in the middle of the floor we found his sister a home where she was the only cat and she was fine. He used to use the litter box alright not consistently but he has pretty much stopped what worse is he doesn't do his business in front of me I had one that would wait till I was looking at him and he would pee on the couch he went to the vet and had a uti. But this one has a clean bill of health no problems just would rather use inside than out. I have heard they dont like pine sent or amonia so that I can put small caps with amonia in them where I dont want him to go or pine cones. Does this work?
remodeling a bathroom, garage style, ideas please? Im redoing my sons bathroom, very small area, just where sink and commode are is about 4x6 feet. other side is shower stall. I am considering doing it in garage style and anything goes. am looking at parts washer for sink, tool box for vanity cabinet, diamond plate wallpaper, lots of chrome, stainless, galvanized, stuff. The flooring has me stymied. Looking for something like a hard surface you would find in a shop or garage, but i have particle wood floor base. He wants a concrete look. Please throw any ideas my way for things to do to this bathroom, i pretty much will try anything.
What is the approximate cost of building a garage with an apartment over it? Details....? Can anyone tell me the approximate cost of having a contractor build a 3 car garge with an apartment above it? The apartment would be about 700 sq. ft. and have cheaper fixtures, carpet, cabinets, etc. Nothing special, vinyl siding, flat lot. I was thinking 25K-30K, or am I way off base? I'll likely use the contractor who just built my (potential) house. It's 1600 sq. ft. with top quality everything, 3BD/2BA, built on a slab. Custom cabinets throughout the house, stainless appliances, nice fixtures and he's asking 125K. Real estate is cheap in my area.

I have a barbie that i found at a garage sale and it is very different looking.. wondering if its a collector? The barbie description that i can give you is the whole body is silver, Her head is dark colored, every part of her is moveable, she has green sparkly hair, a pink dress, that is holographic with green in it and a bow in her hair to match.. She has tights on that are see through and green shoes.. Barbie was made by mattel in 1975 that is inprinted on the back of body.. Does anyone know of a website that i can search for this barbie.. Or have you ever heard of one like this? Its very original and i would like to sell it for some money maybe if its worth it, if not i would put it in my cabinet because its such a different piece.. Can you help me with my filing cabinet?? I just bought a used filing cabinet from a garage sale. It's a 2 drawer, metal cabinet and the metal is "painted" to look like wood. I bought it because it was cheap and I need something immediately to help store all of these papers laying around that I can't throw away. Anyway, for some reason, the cabinet doesn't have a built in frame for hanging files....but it does have these metal rods that go into holes drilled into the sides of the cabinet. The cabinet only came with 2 of these rods, and I don't believe they're for hanging files on because in the middle of each rod, there is a large, square shaped dip. And the drawers aren't deep enough that the files would hang on the sides either. So, what are these rods for? I also have no idea who the manufacturer is or where the cabinet was purchased. Please help!
dad still spanks us? my brother and i broke into our dads cabinet in the garage and spilled a bottle of something on the garage floor. we tried to clean it up but our mom found out. it smelled really bad and i'm not sure what it was. once she found out she sent us to our room. i have a bunk bed with with my brother. when my dad got home from work i could hear him yelling and he came up, opened our door grabbed my brother, yanked down his shorts and underwear and spanked him then he did the same thing to me after he was done with him. my brother is in 3rd grade and i'm in 7th. i can understand why he gets spanked but i am way to big. what can i do to not make him not do that?
A cherished item from your grandfather? My grandfather whom we called "Pa". Lost his hand in the war but was a very talented carpentar with his hook none the less. And I cherish the 5ft tall bird/squirrel feeder, my planter boxes and my roll-a-way tool cabinet in the garage. All hook crafted! Water damage to house, why does the Insurance company stall? My house has water damage that happened over time yet was discovered in Oct. 06. I called the people, they game me a claim number and the house was stripped of damage and mold. (Don't ever have mold). Now that there is no kitchen, cabinets taken out, stove in garage, refridgerator in the living room, now how much longer before someone shows up and helps me to restore the house back into a "Home"???
What IS it with parents today? Ok, I've read 3 questions just in the past few hours about kids starting fires with lighters, kids getting into garages, etc. Why are the parents of these kids not watching their children? Why dont' parents take more precuations with their children? It's insane to see that some people take no measures to protect their kids inside their own homes! Is it sheer laziness? Lack of forethought? Lack of caring? I have 3 kids, ages 14, 4 and 2 and not ONE of them has ever gotten ahold of a lighter, gotten under the kitchen sink, gotten into a medicine cabinet or into the garage! People, they are called safety locks, safety latches, safety knobs! I don't get why a parent would get mad at a kid for ruining something of theirs if they didn't take the precautions to make sure that child didn't even have access to that area?! I get so frustrated with immature parents and people that are more caught up in themselves than in caring for the lives of another human being! Anyone with me? My kids HAVE had accidents mind you. I don't "smother" them and I'm not overprotective. I let them climb trees and I let them fall when they need to. I am not there to catch them every time. I do, however, take safety precautions! If I am working in the kitchen with my youngest (2) she is in her chair that has a seat belt so that she can't climb down and get into the dishwasher. I have latches on my oven. I do what I can to keep them from getting seriously injured. My 2 youngest have both had surgery this past year, one for a tumor and one for her eyes. Accidents DO happen and I have also been through broken bones. My point is that parents aren't even taking the precautions yet they complain and gripe when something happens! I never said it made me a better mother than anyone else.
What special details, do you need to pay attention to, when designing a cabinet that will be hang? I plan to make several cabinets to hung in the hollow block walls of my garage. I'm not too sure how to go about the job... worried that the cabinet would fall apart when screwed to the wall? I was going to use those melamine compressed boards. Special screws? Actually, I need to know whether I screw the sides to the back, or screw the back to the sides. I think attaching the side to the back is better(?) and maybe I should use a thicker backpanel sothat the screws from the side would have more to cling to?
When making a hanging cabinet, do you screw sides to the back, or back to the sides, then screw back to wall? I'll be using those prefinished melamine boards for the cabinet. I'm just concerned that the structure might not be as strong as needed. This is for a hollow block wall in my garage; I intend to make 6 or 7 32-in-x-48-in-x-16-in cabinets hanging about 4 feet from the floor. My concern is that, if a cabinet falls, my car(s) could be crunched! Give me some recommendations even on the anchors that is best to hold the cabinets to the hollow block wall. I would appreciate MORE DETAILS. Please indulge me.
Paint/Stain stripper? I'm going to sand and stain my kitchen cabinets, but they're already installed. I am going to take th doors off and do those in the garage, but for the actual shell of the cabinets, I know there is stain stripper to use so there isn't as much sanding, and less mess. I've never used to stain stripper, can anyone recommend stuff they used or heard was great? Thank you in advance.
Have you ever had a garage sale and do you have any interesting stories from that experience? I just had a yard sale for the first time in my life and I couldn't believe what an awful experience it was! Even though I priced everything low ('cause I am really in a rush to sell everything), people still bargain, make unreasonable offers (such as $3 for a DVD player) and then scoff at me when I say no :) Some also went inside the house and started opennig kitchen cabinets, even though I specified that only the stuff outside is for sale. Others bring kids with them and let them throw stuff around without disciplining them. Etc etc etc I was so tired after yesterday, that I decided I'd rather take the rest of my stuff to charity than go thru this one more day. Can you share your garage sale experience, especially if you had some interesting or weird buyers?:) Some of these stories reminded one more thing from my sale yesterday - I also had a box of rusted or broken kitchen utensils, which I put aside to throw away later. One woman, however, bought it! Some other people were asking me whether I have some sheets or towels to sell...
Where can I find info on real estate assessing? I want to compare comparables in a neighborhood that I'm considering purchasing a home. Is there some formula that is used to see if I'm getting a good deal? For instance, price per square foot ( which is all over the board in this market). Is there a set amount added for things such as a pool, new cabinets, hardwood flooring, three car vs two car garage.
Is there a mouse repellent that works? Poisons leave dead mice inside walls & cabinets to smell bad. Traps??? Traps don't seem very effective. I actually saw a mouse run across several traps without springing them! It would seem easier to keep them from coming in to begin with, than to get rid of them once the are inside. There is no food in the garage, but there are lots of mice. Do the electronic "pest eliminators" actually work? I don't have a problem killing them (I have been using Deacon) but don't like smelling dead mice inside walls etc. (This happened last week.) I can't figure out where they are getting in, but we have had an ongoing problem with them. My house has a basement, not just a crawl space. A cat wouldn't work because I have 2 large dogs.
Lacquer THEN stain? I'm redoing my kitchen cabinets and have all the faces off in the garage. I stripped them, sanded them, and have put 2 coats of stain on so far. My buddy told me that I should put a coat of lacquer on, and then stain them again and then put another coat of lacquer on. Anyone heard of this? He said I would be amazed at the results...I just don't want to be amazed that the stain doesn't adhere to the lacquer after I give it a light sand...

I want to do some light remodeling: new kitchen cabinets, granite countertops in kitchen and bathrooms, update bathroom tubs, and other things. My whole project will cost about $27,000 for materials. No labor costs. My wife and I plan to remain living in the town home for at least another 5 years because starting a family. We will have our place paid off (& will be debt free) in a few months and may possibly sell it one day if our neighborhood gets bad. But we may never move because real estate is SUPER expensive near the beach where we live. Is $27,000 too much to invest in my town house? My reason for the updates is not for resell but to make our home more custom. I want us to be happy with what we have so we don’t go house poor buying a fancier house. Also, should we save our money for 18 months to pay for the project in full, or should we get a loan?

I found a brand new house that I really liked...? they were asking $159,000, but they took $5,000 right away with out us asking, so it's $154,000 now. It's a 3 bed, 2 bath 1 car garage, 1350 sqft. Nice kitchen, GE appliances, and 42" maple cabinets. Hardwood in living room,kitchen and foyer, carpet in bedrooms, and vinyl in baths. It's built by First Coast Homes (Do you know anything about them? Good?Bad?). The only thing is that the other side of the back yard fence is a main road which leads to a high way. We are buying this from a builder, so it's not so easy to negotiate. I already put an offer of $150,000. the person that was showing us around said that they can't take anymore off, what can we do? i really like the house.
