Curio Cabinets Questions
Turning Contemporary Oak Curio into Old World look...? I purchased a large (7' high,4' wide, 24" deep) Polaski brand Curio Cabinet before moving into my new home and changing my decor style. It was very expensive so I want to "convert " it to my current style. Details- It is solid, natural light oak. It has aged and gotten darker as oak does over time. It has large stair step like crown molding at the ttop, base and around the sides as well. I'd like to change the finnish or look to be more of a pecan, burled wood finish like the rest of my Old World style wood furniture. Any ideas on how to do this? The oak has had lemon oil put on it for conditioning, so would I need to strip it? I am an interior decorator and do a lot of faux painting buthave no clue how to get a burled wood look OR how to stain/ refinish it to a darker Pecan color? Help, ideas anyone? Thanks! The rest of curio is heavy beveled glass front, sides and shelves.

Help with color scheme for living room/dining room combo room? I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors. The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help. I hope I dont have to buy new as I just spent 8,000 on this new stuff.....

i bought white italian leather furniture today, would it look? ok to decorate in a classy traditional style or since i bought leather do i have to decorate in a modern style. i also bought a large mahagony shrunk or entertainmet center with built in glass curio cabinets on the side that will be in the same room as the leather. now im considering what types of accents, pictures....ect..to get.
Throwing a halloween party? I am throwing a party this year, and I need some help. Most of our guests will be in their mid-20's and I want to have some kind of activity that the "cooler" guys won't find too corny. Also, I need help decorating the house. My house has a lot of girly decorations with curtains, art work, and curio cabinets with expensive dishes and porcelain dolls. Should I take all this down and hide it, or just decorate over it. How to unlock an antique? My mom has this old Curio Cabinet from like the early 1900's. We recently moved, and the movers locked the cabinet to keep the door from banging. The problem is, we don't have a key and it's locked. Does anybody know how to get it unlocked, or where we could buy a skeleton key?
How do I make a magnet less strong? I have a brand new 7 foot curio cabinet to display crystal with a magentic closure mechanism. The strength of the magnets when they contact is so strong that to open it will cause the items in the cabinet to shake. how can lessen the magnet's strengh? Thanks!

Need help organizing collection of snowmen figurines...? I have a large collection of snowmen figurines, varying in size from 4" to 12"+. I have no idea how to organize them. I would like them to be displayed in a nice, orderly fashion. Somehow, just displaying them in a curio cabinet of some kind does not appeal to me. Feels and seems too messy. Any ideas? guys especially; what does a girl do with a gift she received from a man other than her boyfriend? when I first met my boyfriend I had been going on a few dates with this other guy, until I fell in love and my boyfriend and we started seeing each other exclusively. Any way the other guy bought me a vermont teddy bear (that is a $100.00 teddy bear in case you didn't know) for sweetest day. That was probably the most thoughtful thing any guy has ever done for me... the bear is a race car driver, (I am a super huge fan of motorsports and the guy is a motor cross racer) Any way, my boyfriend knows I have it, and even saw it when I first got it. He knows it was from another guy and he knows that i got it before we were "together" so it has been up in my closet for months. but spring cleaning comes about...I will be cleaning out the closet. I really like the bear and would like to put it in my curio cabinet with my other racing stuff...is that ok??? your opinion please.
When hiring a moving company, should I choose weight or cubic foot? My sister is moving to California from the east coast. This is her first time hiring a moving company and she is a bit confused by the different advices she gets about weight verses space. The moving company suggests calculating the cost based on cubic foot (space) since the piano is heavy. Her friends suggest basing the cost on pounds (weight) since her bed set looks a lot bigger than it weighs. She also read some consumer articles saying that it is better to ship by pounds since that is more easily verifiable. We appreciate any help you can give us, especially if you've had some experience in moving. Thank you, PS-Just so you have an idea, this is what she has: an upright piano, a queen bed set with all the works (tower night-stands/mirrored head board/light bridge), an armour/wardrobe, a dresser w/ mirror, a modern love seat and sofa set (trim-lined and lighter than traditional sofas), a small corner curio cabinet, clothing, computer, a few books, and some kitchen stuff.
My Almost Sister-in-law? History: My brother almost got married to this wonderful girl, whom I love dearly. They got engaged and then broke it off. I saw her sister in the store last year and we exchanged numbers, but they never answered until today. Now: She is getting married to a new guy and I find myself crying every time I e-mail or talk to her. She sent me an invitation to the wedding. My brother still loves her dearly and writes her e-mails and love notes and whispers her name at night (I know this because I hacked into his e-mail). Should I go to the wedding and see this wonderful friend of mine get married and cause my brother more heartache, or should I forget about her and keep the wedding present I had bought for her years ago in the curio cabinet in the living room?
Christmas Problem? I'm in a fix with my living room for Christmas. I have a couch, a large chair, a large TV, and a curio cabinet in the room. On one wall is a mirror with a clock on a shelf in front of it, on another wall is a large set of shelves (though I was considering taking that down). My Christmas tree won't fit comfortably in the room, though. We can't go and buy a smaller tree. The TV MUST be positioned at an angle in a corner of the room, next to the window. My mother likes to look at the tree, so it can't be out of general view. Any suggestions as to how I can make more room, or better yet, organize my furniture? Moving out of state? I'm planning to move to South Carolina from Missouri. It is kind of a on a whim decision but I want to be fully prepared. Right now I'm trying to save up probably over $3,000 so I have a good cushion and I've all but decided on what place I'd like to live in. I'll be moving there with only one person knowing me. No family and only my best friend (who may become more once I'm there). I was wanting to know what type of vehicle I should buy before I move because I want something that will hold my limited amount of things. 3 pieces of furniture (an antique desk, a 6' curio cabinet and a upright dresser) and about 6 boxes as well as a decent sized TV. I'd also like to have some room so I won't need to buy another vehicle shortly after moving there. I don't really want to stay with his family (right now he lives with his parents) because I'd feel like a burden even though I'd have cash to help. My question is can you help with things I haven't figured into this equation? As I said the decision was made on a whim because I want an adventure. I figure hell I'm 24 and I need to be somewhere that I'l be happy with for the rest of my life. I'm not moving there just because of my best friend even though he is a deciding point in it. I was wanting to move there anyway because it's away from my family and somewhere that certain ppl would never think of to look for me. I am wanting to take my time to plan this out and not just have what money I saved and nothing else. I'm sure I can find work once I'm there so a job I'll be looking for a couple weeks before I leave so I can set up interviews for right after I get there. Thanks.
How to sell my 3 piece German Shrank?? I have 3 huge seperate pieces. One is like a curio with glass doors, one is a liquor cabinet, the other is a hutch with wooden doors matching the liquor cabinet, but with plain shelving inside. All are in awesome condition, came from Germany about 25 years ago. the lighting inside them is still in original German bulbs and plugs. Need to know best way to sell them to get most money out of them. Not sure how to sell on ebay and such, because I dont know how to ship such large items. I've always known it to be shrank, but pronounced shrunk. this site is the only time i've seen it actually spelled the way it sounds.
What should I do,my boyfriend wants to get rid of my cat? I love my cat almost like a child.He is pretty good for the most part in my opinion and my boyfriend loves him too.But my boyfriend is getting mad because he has:scratched our leather couch,left scratches on our Amish made coffee table,chewed the edges off our lamps(which are lead but he wasn't hurt?) ran into my curio cabinet and my boyfriend is afraid he will break it eventually,a few other things and I guess the last straw was when he knocked over our Christmas tree and broke a few of our ornaments we got from vacation.What should I do,I don't want to get rid of my cat but I'm tired of my boyfriend taking it out on me when my cat does this stuff.Should I try to just find him a good home?
Would you buy handmade knotty-pine furniture from a swap meet? I am a struggling furniture maker who is thinking about making some items from reclaimed pine (chest of drawers, occasional tables, curios, etc.). My prices would be low, say $250 for a corner china cabinet that was 28"W x 74"H x 18"D. Will I have success??
What caused maggots in decomposed foods? There was a leftover food that I totally forgotten on the kitchen cabinet. What I saw was tiny maggots breeding in the foods. What caused the maggots? Where do they come from? And what does it become after the maggot stage? I am sorry if this is yucky but I am very curios as I am scared that the maggots turn to some kinda creatures ( I know I am exxagerating) but it does taught me a lesson to clear my foods !
