Cabinet Installation Diy Questions

Cabinets???? We just bought a house and the kitchen cabinets have the hardware right in the middle of the cabinets(why? couldn't tell ya) but how could we fix this problem cheaply, we want them to look normal.
Cabinets.................? What is the difference between presidential and parliamentary cabinets?
cabinet refacer messed up my cabinets, what do I do? I've put a lot of time and effort into my kitchen, but I was spent and out of time, so I decided to get an experience cabinet refacer to do my cabinets. It was a pretty straight forward job, "oak cabinets in good condition need experienced cabinet refacer to install new alder veneer." I would supply the veneer, the 3M-90 glue and the money. I found a cabinet refacer on Craigslist. He sounded experienced and confident in his abilities. Well now I'm stuck with a crappy job and I'm out $200. I noticed, as he was laying the veneer on the fronts, that he wasn't taking the time to sand the old surface. He would spray the glue on the cabinets then on the veneer and wait about 3 minutes before applying. The underside of the cabinets is terrible. The veneer is starting to bubble and pull away from the cabinet. I'm at a loss here. Do I have to yank all this out and start over or is any of this repairable? any other tips would be great
Unifinished cabinets, new floors...paint cabinets first? To replace our old cabinets DH and I bought solid oak unfinished cabinets (which I will be painting white), and we bought laminate floor to replace our old vinyl tiles. Anyway, we expected only to be doing the floors until we found some rotten cabinets around the sink and dishwasher. We can't go for too much longer without a kitchen. It will take several days, from what I understand, to paint the cabinets and finish them. We cannot install the floor until we've installed the new cabinets (ok we could, but we're not) because I'm afraid I'll screw up the laminate while putting the cabinets in. DH wants to just paint the cabinets with primer for now, and then finish painting after they're installed and the floor is in, so we can have our kitchen back. Will the cbinets be ok with just primer? How long do I have before I must paint them or risk ruining them? Do I need to clean with TSP before painting, even though theyre brand new? Any suggestions would helpful. TIA.
white cabinets wood floors? I am having a new home built and cannot decide on the kitchen cabinet colors. I can either go with a maple or white cabinets. I like the look of white cabinets with the beige granite with dark veins in it. However, if I do this, should I go with a dark floor? I also don't know if it will make my kitchen look cheap with the white. I need help deciding. There is a lot of cabinets in this kitchen with a HUGE island in the center, so a wrong mistake on the cabinet color I feel will throw everything off.
Kitchen cabinets are pulling away from the wall? My kitchen cabinets are starting to pull away from the wall slightly and I'm wondering how I should fix it. Now, the cabinets are fastened to the wall in the back and it's my far left corner cabinet that is pulling away from the side wall that's the issue. There is a 1.5" gap between the side wall and my cabinet, but the front face of the cabinet extends to the wall and it's 3/4" thick. It's this front portion that has a slight gap between itself and the wall. It used to be flat against the wall and in fact the top still is, it's the bottom portion that has a gap. How can I fix this?
Depth of Kitchen top cabinets? I just had kitchen cabinets installed. The inside of the wall cabinets is just 11 inches deep, and the back of the cabinet is 5/8 inches. Two problems for me: one, some of my dishes won't fit. I had 12 inches of space in my old cabinets. two: the range hood will stick out under the cabinets, as range hoods I have seen are 12 inches deep. Is there a standard for wall cabinets? I hate to have them redone and waste all that work and wood. What can I do?
Kitchen Cabinets? Anyone have any creative or unusual ideas for kitchen cabinets? I will be replacing the cabinets in my kitchen soon (very small, btw), and I do not want traditionally built cabinets. I will be building them myself, and I am looking for unique and creative materials to build them out of. I just want something different. I don't mean how they are painted, what kind of trim or hardware, the style or type of doors, etc. I am talking about building materials. I particularly like the old style metal cabinets, but they are hard to come by (at least at a reasonable price). One idea was to refinish old school lockers, but I am still looking for other ideas. Thanks to anyone who can help.
glazed cabinets? I have oak cabinets and I want to change the look of them, because I don't like them, I've been looking up glazed cabinets and I was wondering if you have to buy new cabinets that are already glazed, or can I hire someone to glaze my original cabinets instead of replacing them with new glazed ones? Also they show different finishes, for example, oak finishes, or cherry finishes... Are cherry finishes only meant for cherry or is it possible to use these finishes on other types of wood to acheive the color of cherry?
On Kitchen Cabinets, is it modern to leave the frames and just get lighter colored doors? I plan on removing this ugly wall paper, get lighter colored doors on the cabinets and hardware, try to get a built in table, recessed lights and under cabinet lights, different counter tops, my floor is tiled somewhere between tan and white, I have dark cabients (oak, they are solid). I have two window next to each other, with a shorter counter height and 3 cabinets below it, thinking of getting something done there too, like a big or 2 end cabinets to store some appliances and built on table, I plan either soft paint or something like green, red, or blueish or maybe yellow for the walls, and a white ceiling celing.
advice on kitchen cabinets? We have a small (long and narrow) area, with the family area on one end, and the kitchen on the other. The family area has a cherry entertainment unit built into the wall. On the other end, our kitchen cabinets are standard oak. The floor is light beech Pergo. Walls are off-white. Do we: - leave the kitchen cabinets as is, and put some decorative elements (e.g. vases or flowers) in "cherry" colors to somehow balance with the big block of cherry wood on the other side of the room? - change the kitchen cabinets to match the cherry entertainment unit (our kitchen is small with one window -- cherry might be too dark and make the space seem smaller?) - change the kitchen cabinets to match the light beech floor? - paint the kitchen cabinets to white, light yellow, something close to the cherry, or some other color? - paint the walls? - other suggestions?
why are cabinets so expensive? People pay $60k for kitchen cabinets, why? What makes these cabinets worth so much? The doors look nice, but cabinet doors are relatively cheap from what I've seen. What makes certain kitchen cabinets worth so much money?

How many cabinets must you make each month to break even? What is your total monthly revenue if you want to profit $2,000? Construct a break even chart for the custom cabinet firm? Yes, this is a homework question... it is actually a practice problem...please help. It is for a business finance class, not math...
Installing Our Own Kitchen Cabinets (?) Please? We're thinking about buying the oak stained cabinets from Lowe's. I've just one question though, that is, I'd like to have a cabinet with 2 large pull out pot and pan drawers. This is a cabinet that would probably be custom made from Lowe's but we can't afford to have one built. We need to use stock cabinets. Is there a way and hardware that we could use on one of the base cabinets from Lowe's and design this feature ourselves? Thanks and I hope somebody has already did this for their kitchen.
Kitchen Cabinets and Water Damage? My kitchen and living room got flooded while I was out of town for 2 days. The insurance doesnt want to pay for new kitchen cabinets, they claim they will be fine since they went through a drying process. I believe this will become an issue after a few months with potential mold and the cabinets becoming warped. My question is, what type of affect did this whole deal have on the integrity of my cabinets? Are they going to be junk, or will they be fine? Note, the water damage was so severe all the subfloor in the kitchen and half of it in the living room must be replaced.
Laminate Floor and Cabinets in Kitchen Remodel - Which first? I'm redoing my kitchen with new cabinets and new flooring. The problem is that I have conflicting information on what should come first, lay the laminate floors down and then the cabinets.. or put the new cabinets down and then the flooring. The idea is with putting the floor down first, it will look clean under the cabinets. But I've been told if you put the flooring down first, the floor won't float and then you'll have creaking. Any thoughts? Please only people who work in that industry, no guessing with opinions...
joke::::::::::::::cabinets? Jolene had wanted new kitchen cabinets for a long time, but her husband insisted they were an extravagance. But, when she went to visit her mother for two weeks, she returned overjoyed to find beautiful new cabinets had been installed in her kitchen. A few days later, a neighbor came over to visit. After admiring the new cabinets, the neighbor said... "All of us were so glad the fire your husband had while you were gone was confined to the kitchen!"
I have laminate cabinets in my kitchen, how would i go about painting them? The previous owner added cheap looking laminate cabinets on one side of my kitchen that clash pretty badly with the other cabinets. I want to paint all my cabinets the same color. Are there any special steps i need to take in order to paint the laminate cabinets?
When installing new cabinets is there a space between cabinet and ceiling? We are planning to have new cabinets installed and everything we look at has spaces between ceiling and cabinet top. Is there a reason for this or is it just for looks. Our old cabinets were against the ceiling.
Kitchen Cabinets? I have a 50+ year old house. In the kitchen I have the original cabinets on the wall, that are solid oak. The cabinets are showing their age. Some of the joints are seperating. I am a handiman by choice. My question is this, has anyone ever sucsessfully removed wall cabinets, reglued the joints, refinised (we're thinking a painted enamel surface) and rehung them. Please no smart butt answers. I already know I can have them refaced or replaced.
Does anyone have red cabinets in their kitchen? How do they look? Do you have any pictures? My husband and I are buying a beautiful old house, but the kitchen has not been updated. The cabinets are brown and depressing. Until we can afford to put new cabinets in, I wanted to be able to make the kitchen cute and funky by painting the cabinets (red). The walls are a nice color of yellow -- so I was thinking of doing yellow/red/black/white color combo...any thoughts? I'd love some pics of red cabinets. Another thought I had was to paint the cabinets white -- a little more traditional...THANKS!
my kitchen cabinets are an ugly gray color. What can we do to change the color. The top cabinets are all? wood. The bottom cabinets are not real wood. We have already thrown the bottom cabinets away.
What color cabinets should i get if i have dark grey carpet? Need help picking out new cabinets/fixtures? I have grey carpet and would like to match that with new fixtures I want to put in my bathroom(sink, faucet, showerhead) and maybe new color on my cabinets. Right now I have Oak cabinets
Ugly kitchen cabinets need $40 fix? Want new look to limp along with for another couple of years until we can get new cabinets. In old farmhouse. Cabinets are painted ivory and I free handed pothos across the upper cabinets. Bought some bronze colored metal knobs recently and installed . Ivory paint still looks good from a distance. Green pothos still looks really good. Since I'd have to sand to get rid of the paint texture I'd rather go with a glaze. Something that will highlight the new bronze color introduction without fighting the pothos leaves would be nice. Please be specific about technique you'd use as well as glaze color(s) if you can. Thank you, Flat panels that have years of dents and dings. Pothos was painted with exterior acrylic and not sealed. Not worried about changing the color green as long as the end product has colors that work well together.
Installing custom cabinets, ceramic tile, and high end appliances. Is a rolling small island cheesy? I have a small L shaped wall 17"deep by 3' wide. I don't want to waste any space, so I have had several ideas, a wall of cabinets seems to "busy", and if I just install a working countertop with cone lights overhead you would be working looking at a wall. I thought about asking the cabinet maker to put good locking wheels and 3 cabinets underneath, and then we could roll it into the center of the kitchen for serving or working and then lock it back against the wall when not in use. As I am typing I am also considering the wear and tear on the wall....... I have never heard of this done. any ideas?
Adding 3/4" height to kitchen cabinets for slab granite countertop installation? I have already removed all counters for my update of our countertops. It is my understanding that we will not have any other backing as our slab is 3cm (1 & 1/4") thick and will be placed directly on top of our existing oak wood cabinets. Most all cabinets are level with one exception, the bar/eating (part of an "L" shape) area which has peninsula cabinets opening on both sides. These cabinets are 3/4" shorter than the rest. My question is: Should I just add by means of gluing and nailing a 3/4" strip above the edges of the cabinets where the counter will rest or is it not going to be solid enough for my template guys requirements?
do i paint my cabinets dark and walls light or the other way around? I want to paint my kitchen walls and cabinets but dont know if the walls should be a little darker than the cabinets or maybe the walls light and the cabinets dark. Also I have paneling I want to paint so do I paint it a different color than the walls and cabinets.
Cabinets refurnishing vs. new cabinets? someone was telling me something about being able to have my current cabinets refurnished...they are white and i would like them to be more wood like....is this better than replacing them? i dont plan on being in the house but a couple of years and just want to make some small improvements while im here. Also is it significantly cheaper or just a little? thanks!
How will my kitchen cabinets look like this? We can't afford new cabinets and we want to lighten our kitchen cabinets. They are stained a dark brown color. We plan to prime and paint whether we do just the doors or all of the cabinets. We considered leaving the cabinets the brown color they are now and painting the doors off-white/cream. We will use black knobs, drawer pulls and hinges. How do you think this will look? Please tell me the reason behind your answer and don't just say that you think it will look good or bad. Thanks! Thanks! So what if we painted the upper cabinets cream and do black hardware and leave the lower cabinets wood and do the same black hardware? That was my husband's first choice.
Refacing Cabinets or Replacing Countertop? I plan on refacing my kitchen cabinets and replacing the existing countertop and sink. Which should be done first? The cabinets or countertop and sink? Thanks.
Painting Cabinets? I would like to paint the cabinets and vanity in my bath, but when I look they have some kind of sleek paper on them can this be painted over.It looks as these was cheap mobilehome cabinets put in here.Whats your advice.

I was wondering if anyone ever used punch tin or ceiling tin for panels of kitchen cabinets if so do you like it seen some great ceiling tin that would look nice in place of the old wooden inserted panel in my cabinets thought i may try it if anyone has used it let me know if you liked it or not
Staining cabinets question? I stripped my wood cabinets with varnish stripper and am attempting to stain them darker. The problem that I ran into that after I stripped and sanded them, some cabinet faces are taking the stain much better than others. Is there something I can put on them before I stain them that will make the stain take better? It's kind of repelling the stain in certain areas. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!
Could I install cabinets...? I want to install some floor vanity cabinets in my bathroom, but the vent for the central heat and air is directly underneath my sink (dont have any cabinets now just a floating sink.) i really want to get the cabinets but is it possible with the vent there cause I dont want to cover it up. please help!!
Kitchen Cabinets? Need some help. Just got a house and the previous owner painted the kitchen cabinets black. The drawers and doors are painted a beige color. How do I paint over the black? (They also painted the back of a bedroom door black too!) Can I sand down the cabinets and get all the paint off, or should I just try to cover them. They painted the walls in the kitchen a sage green and put up a border with grapes on it. :( I would like it to all be either white or back to the natural wood. Any suggestions?
Kitchen cabinets !!! please advice? I wanted to know what color kitchen cabinets is adviisable for a medium sized kitchen in which a lot of greasy food will be cooked DAILY. The cabinets the builder is providing are 42 inches long and there are a lot of them in the kitchen. The kitchen has one window and a walk out door( to the back yard). I am looking for kitchen cabinets parts. The cabinets were sold by Kitchen Town in Norfolk, VA? The cabinets model is "Glenwood". Kitchen town is out of business. Who manufactured the cabinets or are the cabinets components available?
Gluing cabinets (reworded): How long to clamp? I'm making my own base cabinets for the kitchen. It's been 32 years since HS woodshop class. The Elmer's Glue All says "over night" (somewhat vague). I forget how long I should leave the clamps on the corner joints. I just have a fuzzy memory of three days before doing serious work on a glued joint (elmers wood-glue.) When I move the cabinet into place there will be some torsion stress before I place the leveling shims. The corners are reinforced with corner blocks screwed to both surfaces. Solid red oak face, red oak veneer plywood sides, pine plywood back. The solid oak face was pre-stained and finished, though sanded lightly before application. Also: Any recommendations on best glue to use in this application?
Refinishing cabinets?? My husband is refinishing our cabinets by himself and when we removed the old knobs from the doors on the cabinets it left like a diamond shaped mark on the doors. He has sanded and sanded and he can't get rid of them. We want to put new handles on but don't want to see the mark the old ones left behind. Is there any way to get rid of those marks? I guess I didn't make this clear, there isn't any indentation in the wood just like a darker color than the rest of the wood because the knobs have been there for like 30 years.
Kitchen cabinets and sockets? I' m preparing to move into a flat and the kitchen has no wall cabinets. I'm thinking of fitting some myself, but the available wall space has 4 different plug sockets. I've heard that you shouldn't (or can't) drill above sockets. Is there another way I can have cabinets? The kitchen is very small so I need as much storage space as possible.
what are shaker cabinets.? I wanted to know the difference in cabinets. How are shaker cabinets different from other cabinets. Thank You!
Paint suggestions to paint kitchen cabinets white? Hi, I am planning on painting my kitchen cabinets white, but am unsure of what color white I should use. I hope to paint the walls a neutral off-white color also, but with sections under my chair-rail in the adjacent dining area and the soffet over my cabinets in sage. The trim will be bright white and I hope to eventually install an oak floor, tropical brown granite countertops, and I will be updating the cabinet hardware with satin nickel. The appliances will be a combo of black and stainless. Appreciate any cabinet and neutral wall color suggestions that work with this. Thanks! Thanks for the suggestions! I have thought about using Behr's Swiss Coffee on the cabinets for a color, but then I am not sure what to use on parts of the walls that will not be sage. For the person that asked about the curtains etc.. in the room, I am waiting to pick out all the accents and accessories until I have completed the bones of the room. Also, the cabinets are currently an off white or beige. In fact, the whole room is a beige, It's not a nice beige- more like a dirty cream color (cabinets, walls, trim, and ceilings). I think the cabinets are original (1956), but overall they are in good shape. I would love to buy new cabinets too (in a stained spice color), but expense wise, I'm thinking the re-finishing white is the way to go. I've seen some beautiful kitchen with the wite cabinets, wood floors, and granite counters.
My cabinets have a musty type smell any ideas how to remove it? I just moved into an older house (built around 1945) I also live on the Coast so the air is always moist. Installing new cabinets is NOT an option but I feel like everything smells like the cabinets...yup even the food we store there. Any ideas to neutralize the smell?? Thanks
Installing cabinets over baseboard vents? I know you have to create a vent at the platform of the cabinet, but was wondering if anyone out there can give me step by step instructions on how to install base cabinets over baseboard vents?
Kitchen cabinets in good shape outside. Where can I get new drawer glides, shelving accessories...? I'd like to make better use of the space inside the cabinets and fix the drawers that drop when opened, don't glide out smoothly or don't close. Cabinets are original-35+ yrs. old, oak, look great on outside.
kitchen cabinets? I have some older friends who dont have a lot of money to spend. When they wanted to buy new cabinets for their kitchen, they shopped carefully for prices. Decided on a store that advertises low price, about 200 miles away. They drove out there, got the cabinets. Store wouldnt deliver so far away. Countertop for one section did not get loaded into their truck. They had to make a special trip back, to pick it up, at their own expense. Store said it was their fault for not noticing it wasnt loaded on truck. Now this piece is inches too short. They need another one. Store insists they have to pay for both. That it was their own mistake to have taken the first countertop out of the store without noticing it was cut to wrong size. What kind of recourse do they have? Remember, they don't have much money.
new paint on cabinets peeling..help!? I am refinishing cabinets and i used a stripper to remove the old paint and stain then sanded the cabinets...I am using a zinnser oil based stainkiller primer and a benjimin moore final coat.. i let the cabinets sit for 36 hours and went to sand a few rough spots down and the final coat peeled right off like a glove...what is causing this and how can i fix it
Replacing master bathroom cabinets? We need to rip out and replace our master bathroom cabinets (dual sink). They are water damaged and have no drawers. We don't want anything fancy, just simple cabinets with drawers, under sink storage and a simple countertop. The space isn't that large, 21 1/8 deep and 37 5/8 long. Approximately how much would this cost? Is Home Depot a good place to go to buy the cabinets and have them installed? I don't want to get ripped off but this is our first attempt at remodeling so we are a bit clueless. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Painting cabinets question? I'm planning on painting my kitchen cabinets tomorrow and I'm using this wood graining tool. You basically put a light coat of brown down, let it dry, and then put a dark coat on and use this tool and it makes it look like wood grains and knots. If I have like a forest green color on my walls, should I go with lighter browns to do the cabinets? I know too many dark colors make the room seem small, but for resale value what do you suggest? (I was planning on doing a light brown, and then a chocolate color to do the graining with) Mr. Magestic...I have no idea what that means.
I am having two kitchen cabinets installed on the top and two on the bottom with a counter top about 15 inches long along the existing two cabinets on top and two cabinets on the bottom. having a light switch moved. I am buying the kitchen cabinets myself and if the carpenter installs it after he puts it together, he says he will charge labor only $750.00 do u think it's high? please help me...i dont' want to get ripped off. Are carpenters more expensive to use for installing cabinets? What is the going rate for a Handyman? Is $75.00 an hr a lot? cause that's what Handyman matters is charging...help..any handymen out there? I live in the suburbs of chicago. can someone give me some honest handymen contacts please? its' so hard to find honest people to do work like this. anyone recommend a handyman for me? sorry i meat 10 15 foot long counter tops not 15 inches...
