Roofing Installation Questions
Roof Installation??? how much does it cost in labor for roof shingle installation?? Its a normal pitch roof...
Rubber roof installation tips? Part of the roof on the house we live in has a very low sloped roof over it. About 15' x 40'. Presently there is rolled roofing that is leaking, again. I have patched seams, holes,, cracks and am tired of it. I am considering installing a one piece rubber roof. I talked with retailer that can get all the supplies I'll need and he gave me an application guideline brochure I've looked through. Any one have any experience installing these rubber roofs on a low sloped roof? I am not certain of how many layers of the rolled roofing are already up there and there is some un-evenness where it looks like the sheathing is sinking between the rafters. How much variation can I get away with from 'totally flat'? When should I consider a complete tearoff and re-sheath before applying the rubber roof? I have done ashphalt and fiberglass three tab singles but not a rubber roof.
Who do I turn to regarding faulty roof installation? I bought my house and decided to have my roofer inspect the roof. This is what he found.. Rusting nails visable and not caulked, facia board not covered, nails rusty and close to transitions, rusty nails not pounded down and damaging shingles laid above them, broken shingles all over roof, shingles with nail holes in them, and shingles nailed down over other shingles as if to cover a problem. This is occuring over the entire house. I do not have any leaks as yet but fully expect that to occur within 3 years. This roof could not have passed inspection but apparently did. Outside of contacting legal representation who can I turn to. I allready went back to the builder who had someone come back and told me that they had fixed all the problems which was obviously not the case. I have pictures.
Typical cost range for garage doors and Installation and roof tear off? I'm interested in a house that has ragged doors on its two car detached garage. 1) What is the typical cost to replace doors on a two car garage with electric openers? I'm trying to write it into an offer. I know I should get a professional estimate and I will, but later. Should I budget 2K for cost and installation? Is that generous enough? 2) What about a new roof on the garage? What is the typical cost range for a job such as that -remember it is an average sized two car garage.
Installation of a sun/moon roof? I just bought a 2007 Saturn Ion 2, and it didn't come with a sun/moon roof (forgive me, I don't know the difference between the two) and I couldn't get one with a roof because of my budget. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how expensive/difficult it is to get one installed! Thanks everyone!!
Roofing - drip edges, venting, etc.? I have hail damage and the insurance will be paying for a replacement roof. I am looking for a good roofing contractor in the Franklin/Nashville TN area. Also, if anyone has any insight on such things as drip edges. They seem to rarely be put on new houses yet the shingle manufacturers include them in their installation instructions. Are they really required? Any other gotchas or things to ask people that give bids to do work? Thanks.
Roofing questions in Michigan? Hi - I am getting quotes for a new roof (tear off, asphalt shingles) - my problem is that every roofer quotes "different" - really different - 10/12 or 12/12 pitch? 38, 42, 43, or 52 square (2500 square foot ranch 2.5 att. gar, but complex roof) - ridge vent versus more cans versus 2 power fans - (I have a hip roof mostly) - so I don't have enough of a quorum to determine what I need. My questions: 1) 15 versus 30 pound felt? which one, and why? 2) standard ice and water shield ($42) versus "high cost" ($120 / $160 a roll). Is it worth the premium? 3) Alum vs. galvanized flashing? Is there a gauge I should request in the quote so I don't get cheap flimsy stuff? 4) ridge versus cans - and how many soffit vents do I need - and should I baffle them? (if so, I can baffle them myself - attic is easy access w/blown in insulation). How about electric powered fans? 5) Point chimney installation versus "standard installation" - is it worth it? Thanks for your help!!!! As you can see, even my answer folks disagree! Any more help out there?
Directv installation? I just ordered Directv and I live in an apartment complex in which does not allow drilling holes in the balcony or roof and I talked to the customer service rep who said they could bring me a tripod upon installation, which is this Thursday. My question is, has anyone gotten a tripod from them, or know how much they charge for them? I was told I would have to pay for it on the spot and it wouldn't be added to my bill so I'm kinda worrying on the cost factor here, I get paid tomorrow, but as some can relate theres also other bills I have to worry about and can't be shelling out money left and right. Thanks!
car stereo installation / speaker wiring? I have an older Mazda Miata that only has 2 speakers ( 1 per door ). I purchased a radio from Best Buy as the previous one had been ripped out through the roof before I purchased this car. The radio I purchased was a cdx-GT310 ( sony ). It has 4 X 52 W output for speakers. The sales rep stated that the installation instructions would tell me how to convert that to 2 X something output, but they do not. I am no longer in Texas where I bought the radio and the nearest Best Buy is 3 hours away. Has any one ever heard of doing something like this? Fred
installation of glass skylight? How did the glass skylight install on the roof, what is the costings and how longs will be taken to do? ? how they install glass skylight on roof?
How do I do a small self gutter installation? I just got a new driveway, but my garage has no gutters. I'd like to protect my driveway. Three sides of the garage are grass / one side is the driveway. I'm thinking of self installing a gutter along the front face of the garage and only 1 downspout on the corner going down to the grass. My garage roof peaks in the middle so the rain is divided equally (on average) to all sides of the roof. Right now the shingles overlap a flat 4-6inch tall piece of wood on the top of the garage by about 1/2 inch. I'm assuming this is what the gutter would get attached to Should i do it myself? Is this easy to do or should i hire an installer? How much would this run on average to have an installer do it? any resources would be appreciated thanks for any help !!
I want to paint a roof over fiberglass shingles.? I live in southern California where the sun shines over 300 days a year. I have a roof surface covered with fiberglass shingles. The ceiling and roof are the same installation and there is no room for insulation between them. When it is hot outside the roof radiates heat inside. The shingle are a medium gray color. I want to paint them white, hoping to reflect the heat. What kind of paint can I use and how long will it last?
IS the manifestation of a "Crucifix" at work Yesterday a sign that I should become a Christian??? I, like Christ, work as a carpenter on weekends. Yesterday, I was assisting in the installation of a wooden roof on the third story. Earlier, a workman had accidently dropped a plank of wood to the ground. Suddenly, I found myself slipping, and was forced to release the board that I was holding just to hold on to the roof. When I looked down, the two boards had SOMEHOW fallen so as to form a cross!!! IS this a Divine sign from God above that I should renounce Atheism and become a Christian? Your thoughts???

Need Outside the BOX Solutions for a Leaky Outside Ceramic Tile Roof Deck. Also, some tiles can give slightly I'm not sure what to do here but I'm open to all types of atypical solutions to this problem. My priorities are cost and ease of installation with hopes of it looking good afterwards too. Roof Deck is 450sq/ft, 15 years old, and has many cracked grout lines with several voids beneath the tiles where water goes into the house during hard rains. I will enclose this deck as a full room addition a couple of years so I prefer not to spend too much on a long term or expensive fix. I just want to stop the leaking and not have it look like crap afterwards. I am open to anything but here are some of the options I thought of. 1. Coat the grout lines with a true elastomeric coating. Can you get this stuff in different colors to match the tile?? 2. Coat grout lines with an elastomeric coating and then paint another coat of this liquid granite stuff. http://www.amesresearch.com/liquid-granite.htm Know any other coatings? 3. Concrete on top and seal & stain it? 4. Put 2nd tile layer on top?
FRAMERS/CARPENTERS Do you think this is a good price to build a garage? FRAMERS/CARPENTERS Do you think this is a good price to build a garage? The garage is 32'x28' one story, 2x6 walls framed 16" on center, T-111 siding and roof trusses running 35' across the building.( all roof trim and soffits included) It will have 2 -10' garage doors (doors and installation are a seperate price) 1 entry door and no windows. Also to be built is a breezeway, which consists of 2- 5"x16"x14' engineered beams that have to be cut into the existing house walls, that carry roof trusses and tie the existing house roof and the new garage roof together, creating 2 valleyes on the new garage roof, no walls below.( NOTE: the garage sits at 15 degree offset from the house) Also the roof will be covered with metal roofing. There is a slab already poured. I live in New Hampshire The price is for LABOR ONLY With the breezway, the total square footage is 1088' The project will take 3-4 weeks Is 15K a good price for labor to put this building up. Too high? Too low?
Female cable TV field service persons? Intriguing conversation had w/ female friend. The term "cable guy" I used upon waiting for cable tv service ... I must admit may sound sexist, but what is the percentage of female field service persons that work on installing/servicing cable tv connections? Actual climbing on roof, crawling under houses cable installations? I work in a utility that I've encountered some female utility (out there in the field) workers that swing a wrench just as good as male utility workers, so I'm not new to the concept. But we both had to admit not having seen any female cable tv installers. Could be we just haven't seen them in our area, but if there are any ... what would you say is your ratio of female to male installers/service persons?
How do I get my Earnest Money back?? I want to get my earnest money back, and I want ALL OF IT !! I made an offer on a house with the intentions of living in it not rehabbing it. The offer was accepted, and we had the home inspected. There are a lot of things wrong with the house. It costs more money to repair these things than I can afford, and besides I'd rather buy something worth the money I would have to spend, rrather than put money into the house for major things. The house needs new windows, tuckpointing all around and a new roof. Here is a letter I wrote to the seller, tell me what u think. HELP !!!! All these problems need to be remedied before this transaction can go any further. If the issues are not addressed we will continue on our search for a home. FURNACE The furnace/central air needs to be properly and completely installed and functioning. The furnace needs a shut off valve, and a plastic exhaust pipe. Debris in the "clean out" area at the base of the chimney should be removed as part of system service. PLUMBING The old steel piping is subject to corrosion on the interior of the pipe. As corrosion builds up, the inside diameter of the pipe becomes constricted, resulting in a loss of water pressure. This piping is typically replaced when the loss of pressure can no longer be tolerated. ELECTRICAL Extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring. This wiring should be removed through out the house. Poor connections between newer wiring and the old-knob-and-tube wiring were observed. All connections of this type should be performed within junction boxes, fitted with cover plates. The installation of a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is required in the kitchen and bathroom. GFCI offers increased protection from shock or electrocution. STRUCTURE Evidence of termite damage was observed and there is risk of additional hidden damage since termites can do a substantial amount of damage. If the property hasn't already been treated, a licensed pest control specialist should be engaged to eliminate further termite activity within the home. All damaged wood should be repaired or replaced. ROOFING The downspout should discharge water at least 5 feet from the house. Storm water should be encouraged to flow away from the building at the point of discharged. Install downspout at left rear section of house. Stairs leading to basement need hand rails. Drop ceiling in same area needs to be repaired. The fireplace needs a damper. All appliances must stay.
