How do I locate a specific solar roofing material I saw before? Several months ago I saw, in Wall Street Journal/Asia, an article about an elderly American (?) who has a small company that produces solar electrical roofing material in rolls that can simply be cut to fit and applied to the roof of any building. It supposedly functions AS the roof in place of shingles or other roofing material and produces significant amounts of electricity. I can't remember the name of the company or the material and would appreciate learning the source/company/contact info for this product.

Why dont electricity companies use our roof (solar) to generate electrcity to contribute to the national grid? I live in NZ where nuclear electricity generation is not an option and where solutions have to be found that are sustainable. Most of our electricity is generated by hydro-electric dams but as we move towards needing more electricity (it seems minimising use is in the too-hard basket) we are being asked to consider "solutions" such as Marsden B - a proposed coal fired power station. What I want to know is, why cant electricity companies make a deal with us to install solar panels on our roofs which can contribute to the national grid daily? Why dont we all have solar panels in our roofs? If every one in one city had this solar panels installed it will do a lot of good for the environment. Is it possible to turn my unused detached garage as a huge solar collector/power plant for my home? I live in an older neighborhood, and we have a garage that we never use because it's small and inconvenient. It sits about twenty feet from the back of our house. The garage is masonry block construction, about 18' x 18', and has a hipped roof. It faces due south, and is level with our daylight basement, where we have our hot water heater and gas unit for heating and cooling (newer model). I'm wondering if it makes sense to super-insulate this garage, fill it with water storage tanks or some other material that will hold heat, and add roof windows or solar panels on the south-facing side. I know next to nothing about storing solar energy, or methods of getting the warmed air into the house, but I will definitely do the research and try this if it sounds feasible and worth the effort. BTW, I don't have a car anymore. It got vandalized, was a total loss, and one of the best things that's happened to me. I started riding the bus and walking to everywhere I was able, and recently purchased an electric scooter. I don't plan on replacing my car.
