House Remodeling Questions
Advice on remodeling a house? I bought a house for $11,500 in a decent middle class neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The value is listed at $50,000 and it needs a fair amount of work, including new bathrooms and kitchen. I know practically nothing about remodeling houses. Has anyone with little experience in this sort of thing done it before? What can I expect from the experience and what problems did you encounter? Any tips for a person that has no clue about what they are doing? I was hoping to put around $30k-$40k into it and sell it for at least $100k. What are some major pitfalls that can set me back? michael, i phrased the value wrong. i apologize. the county assessed the house at $50k. i haven't had it appraised yet
Remodeling a house.....suggestions? My husband and I are thinking of purchasing a home. We would like to remodel the entire house by extending each bedroom by about a foot and a half, replacing all the flooring, updating the kitchen, and also building an insulated/heated attached garage. All of this work we can do ourselves, since we have a large variety of skills between me, my husband, and our family (including a drywaller, masonary, and contractor....which is a bonus)....how feasible is all of this with a budget of $25,000? Any good websites that might help us get started? (we are in the midwest, by the way, where things are cheaper)
remodeling a house? I'm thinking of buying a multifamily house ($99k asking price, in one that I have in mind) in a neighborhood that is beginning to gentrify. You will be hard pressed to find ANYTHING under 200k in this area, so I'm sure this house needs to be completely redone. As a matter of fact, the assessed value is 93k and I've noticed that for some reason these places are typically sold for twice the assessed value, which makes me think it might be a foreclosure. I have only 10k in actual cash for a house, but am putting $200/wk away towards a house (out of my $550 take home weekly, I save $415 for one reason or another) and I have excellent credit, will have a place to live (free) so I can afford to pay for this place if it's unlivable (the one I'm looking at right now -- it's either unlivable or a foreclosure that is probably still in bad shape) Am I wrong to think that I could handle remodling a house (and no I'm not trying to quickly flip it) with almost no practical experience? http://yahoo.realtyview.com/details/start.aspx?propid=010E000201474
Is it wrong to ask my parents for $$ help for a remodeling project for small house b/c of new baby? Hi there. I am wondering from the rest of the parents out there if it would be in bad taste to ask my parents to help us out financially for a remodeling project which would be to finish our attic to make it livable. My husband and I have a very small (900 square foot) two bedroom house. We are expecting baby #2 (we already have a 2 year old) here soon, and we are really tight on room. Our only option is to finish the attic for our room, but It's probably going to cost around $3,000. I'm not the mooching type (I've been working since I was 14, after that my parents stopped paying for my clothes and stuff, they havn't payed for anything for me since - no cars, insurance, gas, rent, gifts, tuition, absolutely nothing). I have a really good relationship with them, I'm just wondering what some of the other parents with grown children (I'm 22, my husband is 28) out there would do if there kid asked them to help them out with something like this. What do you think? Thanks a bunch! I've never asked for ANYTHING from my parents before, and they've never given me anything either. The friends that I graduated with, their parents paid for their college, bought them new vehicles, paid for their medical and car insurance, bought them houses, totally remodeled houses for them, bought them land, gave them huge wedding gifts, bought them all of their furniture, gave them very large amounts of money for savings accounts, paid for weddings, honeymoons and lots of other things. My parents never did any of that. I've always paid for everything on my own. My parents are in the financial position to do it. They pay for everything for my 20 yr old brother, they've bought him 4 cars and 2 motorcycles, paid for tuition, insurance and lots more. So that's kinda where I'm coming from. Thanks! As I said before, I HAVE NEVER, EVER, EVER, asked for ANYTHING from my parents EVER before!

How does one go about remodeling their house? I inheireted my grandparents house and it is literally..? ....falling apart. It needs a new roof and you name it. It's almost too disgusting for me to even sell it. I'd like to tear it down and start all over but I'm not sure how to go about that. i don't want to be taken advantage of by bankers because this is my first home. (i'm 28) What should I do and what kind of monthly mortgage do you think I'd be looking at if I re bulit the whole thing? the house is paid for.
