Stone Fireplaces Questions
Stone Fireplace? We have an A-Frame style home with a blue stone fireplace running outside & in. We've had a water leak with this fireplace since day 1. The stone extends 3' above the peak of the roof. On the back side of the outside section of the fireplace you can see white stains from water running towards the places where the fireplace joins with the roof. The water travels to the inside of the fireplace and where the sheet rock abuts with the fireplace, causing sheet rock damage. You can also see the water stains running down the inside rock. Attempts were made to solve this problem, including replacing the roof. We had several roofing firms seal the fireplace around the roof line and the top section that extends above the top roof line. We also have a large piece of slate covering the opening at the top. Our house is being vinyl sided and we have asked if a cap can attached at the top. The problem is since the stone is so hard, there doesn't seem to be a way to secure anything to the stone.
Changing a brick fireplace into a stone fireplace? Hi there. We are interested in changing the look of our brick gas fireplace. We thought of simply painting the bricks to change the appearance, but we've decided that we want to transform it completely. That is, we want a stone fireplace. I'm hoping this is a possible task (especially with all of those faux stone products out there). I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions of what products or what company I could use in order to go forward with this project. Thanks for your time and for sharing your thoughts!
Wooden Floors / Stone Fireplace & Half Rounds? We have just had wooden flooring installed, they finished the edges with half rounds which looks mostly ok. Except around the Stone fireplace which has a somewhat irregular shape. Any suggestions?
How do I remove melted wax, from a candle, from a stone fireplace mantel? A home we recently bought has a great stone fireplace. Unfortunately, the last owners spilled candlewax on the stone mantel. We've tried a ton of different things to try and remove it, from stain removers to scraping. Any success stories out there? Ideas? Please share! Thanks! I should mention the mantel is not painted, it's not polished, and it's very, very porous. Thanks!
How do we fill the space/gap between the new flooring and our stone fireplace? We have recently installed new hard-wood flooring. To install, the planks have to be tilted then slid it, then lifted to a 45-degree angle, then laid flat. We have a stone fireplace and due to the inconsistency of the curve of the stone, a space/gap was required to be left. How do I full this space/gap so that it looks good? And we can not just fill it with mortar because all the spaces/gaps are not the same size. Some are large and some are very small. Someone please help me..
How do I clean smoke-damaged walls and a stone fireplace damaged in a house fire. What about the odor? The fire was confined to one bedroom. Unfortunately, the smoke damage went through almost the entire home - 3,000 square feet. Is there a way to clean the walls and ceiling without replacing all the drywall? The stone fireplace is also covered in a layer of smoke. Any suggestions on how to deal with this mess would be appreciated. I prefer to save the cost of doing it myself, instead of calling the "professionals".
How do you clean a very sooty stone fireplace? The firebox is black and the stone around the opening is too. The previous owner either built fires too large or didn't open the damper enough. The stone is a Tennesee Sand Stone. Any help? The fire place is in the basement so venting isn't going to happen. I know that degreesers don't work because they soak into the stone. I have heard about th acid working before but am a little worried at the caustic nature of it and the ability to rinse being limited as I am inside with a finished basement. I will have to try the boric acid first since this is coming from a mason. I will let you know how it works on the abuse that happened to this fireplace.

Keeping toddlers away from a raised stone hearth? I have two toddlers--18 months old and nearly 3 years old--and we just moved to a new place that has a stone fireplace with a hearth that's raised about 4 - 6 inches. They are both fascinated with it, and won't stay away from it. My husband zip-banded the screen together so they won't climb in it (lol) but we can't keep them off the hearth. They both run over to it at 90 mph and step up on it and walk the length of it. A) it's very dirty and needs to be cleaned (apt. complex is going to do that later this week) and B) more importantly, I'm afraid one of them is going to run and trip and take a header into the corner of the stone. Does any company make some type of fire place padding or corner padding for this type of situation?
Build a Brick/Stone Outdoor Fireplace? I would like to find plans to build an outdoor fireplace. We are wanting to create a great outdoor living room and think that as grand fireplace will set it off. I just need to know if this project is something that can be taken on myself or should I hire out a contractor.
How do i tear off the sides of my fireplace made of stone? I want to leave the center fireplace there but remove the 6 ft. stone walls on both sides. This wall is in the center of my house and divides the living room from the kitchen. If i remove these two sides it will open up the area to have more of a great room affect. I dont know if it matters, but there is a fire place on the kitchen side as well but not a see through one. The stone does go from top to bottom and there is no seam on the livingroom side to cut away streight from the hearth. I am a DIY and funds are very limited. I was thinking I would propably need to shore them up on either side as well so i was thinking of going rustic and putting rough beams on either side to finish off the exposed area from the missing stone.
stone polishing for a fireplace? i have a fireplace with large stones on it and i would love to make them look different than what i've been living with forever is there anything i can do like some kind of polish that would make it shine or something?
Can I finish my fireplace with man-made stone myself, or hire a professional ? We're handy but first timers. We're looking at Boulder Creek product line. We're considering stackable, groutless stone. We have a gas fireplace, framed-out by wood and 5/8 sheetrock. Boulder Creek directions state layout black rosin paper, 3/4 wire lathe, scratch coat on top and mortar to install stone. Will this process adhere to sheetrock? Should we use wonderboard instead?
