Ventless Fireplaces Questions
Ventless fireplace vs. forced air heating system? We live in a 5,000 square foot house in Chicago, 3 floors up and an English Basement. We had a ventless fireplace installed and run it about 14 hours straight in the winter and just keep our zoned heating (forced air) off. Is it cheaper/more efficient to use the ventless or am I spending MORE money running the ventless non-stop? Being that the ventless is 100% efficient, or close to it, it can easily heat the upper three floors comfortably. So, am I spending more using the ventless? I'm trying to save $$ with gas being so high these days. Thank you to everyone in advance.
Fireplace ventless? i have a ventless fireplace. everything works pilot etc. however the fireplace will burn for about 3-4 minutes then die out. you can restart or leave on and it will come back on, then die out again. all other gas appliances in the house are ok so it is not a gas line problem, air etc. any thoughts. thanks.

I am smelling gas odor when using my ventless gas fireplace..is this normal? I have a ventless fireplace(also called a ventless gas log heater) in my livingroom. The way it is set up, there is a clamp that props open the flue about 1/2 inch. The first time we ran it we immediately got a strong gas odor that filled the whole house. The gas man came out when I reported the smell and he said the odor is normal a by-product of gas burning and I should run the fireplace with the flue closed. But the odor gives us a headache so we run it with the flue completely open ..odor is gone but we get no heat out of it at all. What is he talking about when he says the gas odor is normal..this just doesnt seem right even though he had the co2 wand out and did not detect anything... and running it with the flue closed that really doesnt seem right!!! help Concerned Daniel.
residential ventless boiler using natural gas available? when renovating my house(built ca. 1880), i consider to take the current chimney down to make more interior room for other uses. to make this possible, the boiler (for steam radiator of the house) has to find a place to vent, or is there such thing as ventless boiler or furnance available for the residential heating system? i heard of ventless fireplaces. but i think they generate much less btu's instead.
Ventless Jelled-Fuel Fireplace? Are ventless jelled fuel fireplaces safe around children? Do the flames really get hot or is it like an electric fireplace?
How do I light ventless fireplace without electricity? I lost the manual, my set up has a spring loaded black nob that I turn counter clockwise once I hear the his of gas I push the igniter several times and the pilot comes on. I know i`m to release the nob and the main burner should light or does the main burner light before the nob is released? can anyone tell me the correct order this should happen. when I release the nob the pilot goes out.
Why is my brand new ventless natural gas fireplace now working? I have a brand new house. This is the first cold season to use our natural gas fireplace. Once we turn the fireplace on, it stays on for maybe 1 minute or less and then completely shuts off (including the pilot light). We have already had our control valve and pilot light/thermocouple unit replaced and still it doesn't work. The repair man (who has came out to our house 3 times already) says that he has replaced everything on the unit and it now HAS to be a gas pressure issue from the natural gas line and that I need to have the gas line guy come out and test the pressure to the right specifications of the fireplace. Does this make sense? It's getting really frustrating to say the least. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Are there any vented gas fireplaces without glass? We're building a house (lodge) and want a gas fireplace. By all accounts, vented is better than ventless, except for one thing - all the vented fireplaces I've seen come with protective glass that's not removable (at least not for everyday operations). Do vented gas fireplaces without glass exist? I think the glass spoils the look - everything else looks pretty genuine, except for the piece of glass. I wouldn't mind glass doors, but I do mind a fixed piece of glass. Any ideas of what to do? Thanks
What type of gas fireplace do I have? Vented or ventless? My gas fireplace has a flu, but also has vents above and below on the interior of the house. There is also a switch on the wall beside the fireplace which doesn't seem to do anything. I want to use this to heat my home, but with the flu open it does nothing to help. My main concern is CO gas. I bought a CO detector which raises another question, "install downstairs or up?".
how do you get more heat from a wood burning fireplace with gas log-lighter? i have a wood burning fireplace with a gas log-lighter. i just use the fireplace basically as a gas fireplace as i dont feel like going through the trouble to burn real wood. the problem is that the heat goes right through the damper and out the chimney and does not provide very much, if any, heat to the room. what can i do to increase the heat with the current system i have? is it possible to install a blower? or is that just for ventless fireplaces? the fake wood and ambers that are in there now certainly look nice but arent providing the necessary heat that one would expect. Am i just using the fireplace wrong and should be using real wood in the first place? any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.
What is the best way to heat my finished basement? We have a fully underground basement. Walls are poured concrete. Ceilings 8'. Approx 1500 sq feet. 1500 sq feet finished. Elec furnace. Three heat vents open in basement. In the summer it is fab to go down there to escape the heat but in the winter it is chilly enough that the kids won't ever go down. I'd guess the temp with just the heat vents open to be maybe 55-60F. What is a safe and quick way to heat the area? I only want to heat it on occassion to about 70F. I have 2 small electric, portable space heaters but they take forever & don't get the space much warmer. I'm wondering if something like Eden Pure or possibly a ventless fireplace would do the trick. On days like today, when we are totally snowed in, it is so much better for the sanity of the entire family if they are down there playing away! :) Should also add that I am scared to death to handle anything that uses any fuel (propane) so that it is probably not a good option for me. Thanks Much!
Question about converting from wood burning to gas or another fireplace that outputs heat? We have a wood burning fireplace that's an energy hog. Lots of cold air penetrates through it even with the damper closed. On top of that, it supposedly has a crack in the lining that will cost about $350 to fix. I hate it and don't use it. Do I have any options for getting an insert that will enable me to use the fireplace to generate heat? Maybe one of those ventless gel-fuel deals? If I get an insert or whatever else you suggest, please let me know if I'll need to fix the lining in order to use it. I do not have propane or natural gas in the house. Thanks! Please state if you're talking about a vented or a ventless option. Thanks!
Gel burning fireplace inserts? I have a fake fireplace made of what seems like a hard plastic and want to put a ventless gel burning insert inside, is this possible without danger? Are they insulated?
Gas fireplace insert question!? I have a two sided fireplace. You see one side in the living room and one in the kitchen. We burn wood in it right now...but I want to get a gas insert so we don't have to worry about wood anymore. My question is do they make ventless inserts two-sided? I don't want to close up one side of my fireplace. If they do can you refer me to a site??
