Wood Burning Fireplaces Questions
Wood Fireplace - Logs burning to fast? I have a wood burning fireplace. The problem It seems is that when I put logs in the fireplace they seem to burn extreamly fast. I went through a half a box of wood in one night. I go to another persons house and they have one log burning at a nice slow and comfortable rate. Why is this? I should add that the wood I was burning last year was sitting out in the weather for over 1 to 2 years. This is my 2nd year using this fireplace.
Should people who have woodstoves and fireplaces burning wood be required to clean or scrub the air? It is darn hard to breath in Kittery these days. People burning wood creating soot and ash and carbon thick humid air, not exactly ripe for breathing or even taking a walk in. Should these people be required by law to scrub the air with some preciptators or cleaning devices on their chimneys? Isn't this a health hazard? If I leave a window open on my house, the smokey air comes into my forced hot air system and makes the whole house smokey? Isn't this a violation of the airspace after a certain hour?
how do you get more heat from a wood burning fireplace with gas log-lighter? i have a wood burning fireplace with a gas log-lighter. i just use the fireplace basically as a gas fireplace as i dont feel like going through the trouble to burn real wood. the problem is that the heat goes right through the damper and out the chimney and does not provide very much, if any, heat to the room. what can i do to increase the heat with the current system i have? is it possible to install a blower? or is that just for ventless fireplaces? the fake wood and ambers that are in there now certainly look nice but arent providing the necessary heat that one would expect. Am i just using the fireplace wrong and should be using real wood in the first place? any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.
Question About Ventilating a Wood Burning Fireplace? I really want a wood burning fireplace. I've noticed that some inserts look just like fireplaces that were originally built with the home. I'm thinking of buying one of those. 1) How do I find a reputable installer? 2) How do I know the right price to pay? 3) Is it true that most new homes have these kinds of fireplaces? Ones without actual chimneys, but rather piping for ventilation? How does it look? There is no type of fireplace in the home now, we'll need to make a place for one. So part of my question is do they tap into the furnace chimney or make a seperate hole? I have been told that they make a hole through the wall, run the vent up the side of the house -they surround the vents (3 pipes) in wood -it then looks like a wooden chimney (the outter pipes are cool to the touch). I don't think this will look nice, but I don't know... I wonder if it can be bricked at this point. They say that they typically use siding for this part of the project. What are your thoughts? They say this type of installation is common in new construction. Have you seen it? How did it look?
can i install a gas log into a wood-burning fireplace? I was told that because wood-burning fireplaces have huge exahust therefore if I use gas logs I loose a lot of heat so it works mostly as a decorative rather than heating unit. is this true? btw, my wood-burning fire place's designed for gas logs to be installed and hast an 8 1/2" exahst pipe.
Question about converting from wood burning to gas or another fireplace that outputs heat? We have a wood burning fireplace that's an energy hog. Lots of cold air penetrates through it even with the damper closed. On top of that, it supposedly has a crack in the lining that will cost about $350 to fix. I hate it and don't use it. Do I have any options for getting an insert that will enable me to use the fireplace to generate heat? Maybe one of those ventless gel-fuel deals? If I get an insert or whatever else you suggest, please let me know if I'll need to fix the lining in order to use it. I do not have propane or natural gas in the house. Thanks! Please state if you're talking about a vented or a ventless option. Thanks!
How to change the facade of a wood burning fireplace? Unfortunately, I have a wood burning fireplace in my living room instead of a traditional fireplace. I like the look of the fireplace itself, but there is stone all on the wall behind it which limits what I can do color wise with the room. (I prefer color - not beige, which is all I can really use) There is also the stone encircling the fireplace on the floor. Can I put some kind of drywall or plaster to cover up the stone, and still be able to use the fireplace safely? I would like a clean, solid look.
How much will it cost to have my old wood burning fireplace replace with electric? I have a wood burning fireplace with a very strong draft. My fireplace have a recirculating fan where the air draft is coming. In front of the fireplace are bricks which it gets cold during winter. I tried everything I could. For now, I had my fireplace covered with plastic. I still have the brick, so the living room is still cold. I want to replace it with electric fireplace, get rid of the bricks and install a mantel to dress it up. I also want to get rid of the chimney. How much will it cost me? Thanks. I think putting a gas fireplace is a good idea. But how do I find out if my current wood burning fireplace have access to gas lines? Thanks again, I really appreciate all the help.
Fireplaces? We now have a wood burning fireplace and are considering changing to propane, (just for convenience), but would we be disappointed and miss the ambience and smell and crackling of the wood?

Cleaning ash out of a wood burning fireplace? Holy smokes I forgot how much ash a fireplace produces! It's time to clean mine out... we've been in our new house for about 6 months now and I haven't lived in a home with wood heat for many years. Growing up my dad always used a metal bucket that he set outside for a while before he dumped it. I don't have a metal bucket, so I haven't had a fire for over 12 hours to make sure there aren't any hot buds in there. I'm just going to use some grocery sacks, etc but I'm wondering what other people use or if you have any tips/tricks?? Thanks!
Can I remove my gas logs and make my fireplace wood burning? I never use my gas fireplace because of the cost of natural gas however I would like to take my gas logs out, shut off the gas and make it wood burning. Is that possible/safe? It is an all brick fireplace and chimney. It has a fairly large flue so I think it could accomodate the smoke. Has anyone done this with a fireplace that was built as gas?
Can you mount a plasma TV over a wood burning fireplace? We have a 52" plasma TV and are thinking about mounting it over our fireplace. We are concerned that the woodburning fireplace may cause too much heat and cause damage to the TV. Has anyone else done this? Have you had any problems? What else do we need to consider in making this decision? Thanks!
