Plumbing Questions Questions
plumbing questions? I had a bathroom added 8 months ago. From the start everytime you turn the faucets on in the bathroom, the water comes out white and bubbly for the first 2-3 sconds on both sinks. Do I have a problem? Please advise.
plumbing questions? water pressure is low when the hot water is on and returns when the cold is turned on, any ideas, help
Lots of plumbing questions re central heating & hot & cold water? I am in the process of relocating my bathroom and need to bring hot & cold water and a radiator over to the new bathroom. I think I knwo what I need to do, but just wanted to run my ideas past people on here. I'd appricate any feedback! My heating is on 8mm (I think) microbore fed from tees on a 22mm send & return. Downstairs rads are fed from a ceiling drop & the pump is on the return. There is currently an 8mm feed for one of the downstairs rads where i want the bathroom one, but this already serves 2 rads. I guess the best way to do it is tee off the 22mm. I also understand that copper is the way to go due to the pump being on the return. I was intending to use push fittings for this. As for the hot & cold water, I was considering plastic, again with push fittings. Eventualy I intend to get a combi boiler, but that's not for quite some time as yet, butI can't see this causing any problems. Any comments?
plumbing leak soldering questions.? Okay, I'm a brand new do it myself plumber here. Installing a complex new shower tub faucet. Had 14 soldered joints and connection to make. Got the unit all in and all semmed fine. This until I turned on the uptake shower head. That joint sprayed like a bursted damn. This was my first soldered joint, before I had it down. The outside of the joint features clumpy silver soldering and obviously it did not wick properly into the seams. Can I still finx this where it sits, or do I have to take apart the joint? Can I heat it back up super hot and re-solder it? Thanks
Plumbing question here!!? My shower faucet has the hot and cold water mixed up, then it would only turn on with scalding hot water, but would readjust itself if you played with it. Well my husband broke the faucet knob off now. If we replace the faucet will it fix the hot and cold water problem we are having and also on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to replace a shower faucet. I know nothing about plumbing and my husband will not do it, so I guess its me to the rescue....only..... I know nothing, but am willing to learn. So I realize I have asked about 5 questions in one but any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Plumbing Question - Coincidence or the Cause? We moved into our house in September, and as we just recently tried to shut off the outdoor water spigots for the winter, we realized that our interior shut off valves to these spigots leaked if we tried to shut them off. So, we hired a plumber. He came yesterday, shut off the water to the whole house, and put in new valves. Problem solved, right? Well, no. Since he came here, 3 of our homes faucets or tubs have lost hot water pressure. Cold water pressure is fine, and the hot water is fine everywhere else but in these 3 places. The plumber says the water pressure issue is unrelated to his work, and that it is an issue related to the hot water heater and sediment - and that he didn't touch the hot water heater, or the faucets in question. I know nothing about plumbing, but common-sense tells me this is more than just coincidence. Do you all have any thoughts or suggestions?
plumbing question...hot water heater piping repair? Hey, sorry for such an obvious question...but...I am about to slice off some pex plumbing that is leaking at the fitting (which is at the top of the hot water heater and is the hot water line toward the house) and refit it...so, I turn off the electricity. Then...turn off the hot water valves...and open them up in the sinks in the house to clear the water?...hmmm, I just want to make sure that when I cut the pex that there wont be water in the line come a spurting out...do I need to drain the whole hot water heater first? Sorry I an 8 years old (or at least that is what my wife keeps saying to me in a very loud and angry voice). Thanks.
Heating/plumbing question...? I just had a new furnance installed last week. I have a home that is 104 years old (I've only owned it a year and a half) with all the plumbing connections in the basement crawl space. Even though I have insulated all the pipes I can get to, they froze today. I have a heat tape on there now but my question is: Wouldn't it be the more intelligent solution to vent heat into the basement to prevent this from happening again? Is it unusual and/or wasteful to heat a partial basement normally?
Need PLUMBING SUPPLIES? www.niagaraplumbinginc.net I LOOKED AT THIS SITE AND CALLED. THEY ANSWERED ALL MY PLUMBING QUESTIONS AND HAVE COMPETITIVE PRICING. CHECK THEM OUT.
plumbing question? About how much in plumbing materials to plumb a house with 1 bathroom, and kitchen? its a small 700 sq cottage actually.
plumbing question in a small kitchen remodeling project? we want to relocate the sink (to an island which is 3 -4 feet away from it's original location) ... Is't possible to extend the existing plumbing/pipe without re-routing the plumbing (which would cost more than $10,000 from what I have heard as the basement below is finsihed).
Plumbing Question. All of our fittings are Kohler brand. Do I HAVE to install Kohler fixtures?? I have been told we have to use all Kohler brand fixtures in the house we are building because when the "rough" plumbing was installed, they used Kohler valves. Is this true? Is there some way the fittings can be universal and we can purchase say, a Fontaine brand faucet even thought the plumbing out of the wall is Kohler brand? HELP! I DID ask a plumber. I have been told 2 different things. I wanted to order a bunch of fixtures on eBay and the store told me I had to buy Kohler brand or they wouldnt fit. Maybe its the sinks and toilets that need to be Kohler, and any brand for faucets?
Plumbing question? I am re-tiling my shower (bathtub w/ tiled walls). On the plumbing wall, there was 5/8" drywall, mastic, and a 4" ceramic tile. I am not replacing the faucet or tub spout. I tore out down to the studs and put up 1/2" cement board. Now, as I hold a new tile (8"x10" ceramic) next to the tub spout nipple, the nipple is not long enough. I figured that losing 1/8" in the backing board would provide enough of a safety net to replace the tub spout. Unfortunately, I didn't decide to check this until I had the new cement screwed in and the joints mortared. With the addition of mortar under the tile, I doubt that I will be able to screw the old spout on at all. I do not have access from the back. I know that it would have been easier to replace that 1/2" galvanized nipple while I was in the wall, and I hope that it will just easily screw out if I need it to. What are my options? I can still see where it is attached inside the wall. It appears to be 4-1/2" long (5" ?). It is short by like 1/4". Just with the cement board on, I can turn it like two full turns. It is not short by much.
Plumbing question? We just moved into our newly purchased 1987 house. Its a split level with a basement with 2 bathrooms. Any time we turn on ANY of the water faucets, or showers or flush in the house, we can "hear" it in the entire house. There is no leakage anywhere and all the faucets deliver good pressure of water. But the noise is annoying, especially at night. Is this common? Is there any problem with the plumbing? I have heard a term called water hammer, is this noise related to that? What can be the remedy? Thanks for sharing your experiences/solutions. Going by the info about water hammer provided by many of you below, I must add that my problem is not related to water hammer.
Plumbing question? I'm doing a little plumbing work on my home. I need to install a shut off valve. The one that I purchased is a sweat type. My concern is how to sweat the joints without doing any damage to the valve. Should it be open or closed? Do I need to take it apart? What is the trick? Sorry that I left this piece of information out. It is a ball valve.
Plumbing Question! Continuous backup in basement? We are having a small problem with our plumbing. The unused bathroom in our basement would overflow all the time (we are on a septic system) even when our pump was on. We capped off the Toilet and sink now. Now when we shower/flush/laundry, it comes out of the tub and the drain line for the washing machine. We have snaked all lines but the stack and the tub. What can we do (this is a long weekend, and it would cost alot of $$$$ to call a plumber out 45 min out of the main city) We have lived in this house three years, the septic tank was just cleaned out in November so we haven't ignored it and this problem JUST started this past week. We have capped off the toilet already as we were getting MORE water when the toilet was there. Its not so much now, but just leaking out of other places. We are aboot to go clean the stack (oh and we have thawed out the ice in the vent on the roof as the weather has been almost -45 for three weeks) in the basement.
Plumbing Question: water to the house, but will not come out of the faucets!? We are looking at buying a house and wanted to have the water turned on for the house inspection. The water company come and turned the water on... we could hear the water and the meter was spinning but water wouldnt come out of the bathroom sink or kitchen sink. We did soon find out that a line behind the shower had seperated and water was coming out there. We also couldnt find the water shut off valve. We looked everywhere:in the house and in the crawl (which you cant really get into because there isnt enough clearance.) So I have two questions... Where else could the shut of valve be and why isnt water coming out of the two facuets? The house is a forclosure and the law firm that owns it knows nothing about it. We have no one to ask where the valve is.
I have a plumbing question.? Almost every time I have some plumbing done in my basement, the plumber looks at the water meter in my basement and says that the pressure relief valve in my cold water supply line needs replaced. I let a plumber do it a couple of years ago and I watched how he adjusted it with a wrench. This last plumber did not even try and adjust it down to a lower flow, he just said it needed replaced and the last time it was 110.00. So I am wondering if this is a common plumbing ruse to get money from homeowners, especially since the master plumber who replaced our boiler two years ago did not see a problem with it. I really only want an answer from someone who knows for sure, and thanks in advance.
2003 International Plumbing Code question, hot water heaters...? Does this code require hot water heaters to be elevated on a platform? I currently have a 40 gallon tank that has a slow leak. I would like to replace it with a 66 gallon tank from Sears, which is 14 inches taller than my current tank. In order to NOT have to do extensive modifications to the piping, I would have to install the new tank WITHOUT the platform that my current tank is sitting on (steel, 18 inches tall). Question is - can I do this and still meet code? Or do I have to install the new one on the platform as well, and just suck it up and have the modifications done to the plumbing? My current hot water heater, sitting on its platform (and inside the drip pan) is 65 inches above the floor of my garage. The new tank is 61 inches tall, which means I could elevate it maybe 3-4 inches by sitting it on some bricks or something.
Re plumbing ? I have just purchased a new/old house and just starting to put down a plan of action on the plumbing. Question; is it worth of even thinking about running copper piping verses plastic ? Would the cost between the 2 be a big one ? Luckily all the rooms that need to be re plumbed are pretty much over the top of each other and the same wall all the way up will keep things simple. Thanks for your time. This re plumbing is just for water purposes only.
Plumbing Question? On average how much does it cost to get a natural gas line run in a kitchen for a cook stove? I may be inheriting a gas stove in the near futuresince my sister is remodeling; but my kitchen is not plumbed for gas. I have gas heat and a gas water heater. I just need a ball park figure. Thanks.
Washing machine/plumbing question.? We bought a new front load washer and it's a bit different from regular machines in the sense that when it opens the valve for water at the first cycle it starts than stop, starts than stops several time. This off and on of the water causes the pipes in the wall to make a loud banging noise. I assume it's from the quick cut and release of the water pressure. My question is can this do any long term damage to the pipes? Thanks.
Plumbing question: shutoff valve in kitchen - reuse existing parts? I managed to remove the existing shutoff valve from underneath my kitchen sink. Now the question is do I reuse the part that looks like a ring or collar? If I should replace the "ring" with the new one that came with my new shutoff valve, how do I remove the old one? It appears to be buried way back somewhere in the existing nut.
Plumbing Question!!!!!!!!!? I have replaced a radiator today. I drained the system down (a sealed system). Took off the old radiator and replaced with a new one. When i filled the system back up to 1 bar, i turned off the filling loop but the pressure still rose to 2 - 2.5 bar and the boiler will not ignite. I know that the pressure should be 1 bar when cold but i dont know why it has risen? I have bled all of the radiators but to no avail. The boiler will not ignite at all on the central heating but will ignite on hot water demand. Can anyone help on this????
plumbing question....? Last Friday our neighbors flushed something down toilet and backed up our upstairs bathroom and theirs. We had raw sewage in the bathtub and brown water leaking down into our living room from below the bathroom, which I can only assume was sewage also. The restoration people said that pretty much all of our living room walls and ceilings are still wet. What are the health hazards of living here, if any, while we are waiting for the insurance adjusters to come out?
plumbing question? draining issue? I have been noticing that the bath tub has been draining extremely slow lately.... have tried a plunger and also a water jet connected to the garden hose, any other suggestions. ALSO, My toilete has been requireing double flushes (if u know what i mean). its gross but reminents have been coming back after first flush. I am tied into sewer, no septic. Help is greatly appreciated. the tub has a over flow valve on it so i dont know if that would affect the vent on roof?
Plumbing Question - Toilet? We have an upstairs toilet that works fine, but the water in the bowl is very low when not in use. The water rises to a normal level when flushed, but it doesn't fill back up completely afterward, an air bubble comes up when the handle is pressed. My husband would like to fix it himself. What's the problem and what can he do to fix it? We just bought the house in May, so I don't know a lot about past performance - the inspector did mention it when he inspected the house. But said he couldn't be sure why it was happening. My hubby did try adjusting the floater/water level, so we knew it was not just that.
plumbing question? i'm redoing a pvc water line and having problems with sealing off. the primer and glue are not new i don't know how old but the cans are rusted on top. can the glue go bad after a while? i've worked with pvc alot and never had any problems until now.
Plumbing question? i would like to move the washing machine into the garge but the water hookups are near the kitchen. would it cost alot of money to have them moved to the garage? and the ones in the kitchen removed completly.
Plumbing Question: I put in a new sink and now the drain is slow.? If I encourage it with the plunger, it drains fast until the water is gone. When I turn on the tap again, the drain is slow again. When I disconnect the drain, the sink drains into a bucket fast. When I took out the trap plug, it drained fast. Put it back together and then it's slow once again. Please don't say "Call a plumber"; I get that. I just wanted to know if anyone has had a funny slow drain like this before, where it will drain fast if it gets a sinlge pulse with a plunger then return to slowness. It's a bathroom sink with 1ΒΌ" drain line. It was no Niagara Falls before, but it takes almost a full minute to drain a gallon of water. I agree with the vent comments but I'm not sure what to do about that. I already put a shop vac down the drain to see what would happen (nuthin). Hard to believe it's a clog since one tap with the plunger makes a gurgel then the water flows fast. Thanks for yuor comments so [Except one ;o) ]. Well the plumber came by, gave the pipe a good cleaning with the snake, checked the vents and wound up putting my little set of pipes back in. He had never seen anything like it in 14 years, so the next step is to open up the wall or...just put up with it. He thinks there might not be enough slope in the pipe; but it drained before. Thanks for your help!
plumbing question? When ever the washing machine drains or when the bathtub is drained the toilet will bubble air. But ever thing drains just fine and I have checked and rechecked the vents on the roof by running a water hose as far down the vent as I could while running water. The tub is on the very end if the line then the sink next the toilet then the washing machine the rest of the house is just fine.
Plumbing question. Regarding water that isnt running from faucets.? This morning I found that for some reason my toilet tank isnt filling any longer with water and that also my kitchen sink is no longer letting out hot water. For the bathroom its weird because all the other faucets are working(bathtub, sink). And also in the kitchen the cold water in the sink is working. I thought it might be a frozen pipe, but that doesnt explain why the cold water in the kitchen is still working. Same goes for the bathroom. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
plumbing question? they came to my house to unplug the sewer drain and they found out that there are roots growing in the pipie they fixed it but i want to know how u could fix this problem without replacing the sewer line. would cutting the tree work is there something to kill the roots also what is a good drain snake to use for this i cant remember the name of the snake he used it was like leviton or something does anyone know what this brand was
Plumbing question -- replacing pipes under sink? My J pipe cracked -- I pulled it and got a new drop-piece piece (basin to trap), a new trap, and a new J pipe. I cut the J pipe to length, and connected everything. The only place where there is no threading is J pipe to trap. There's a 1.5 cm gap here. What can I use to clamp these together, or is there a different approach I need? Pieces are 1 1/4" metal .
Plumbing question- new toilet wobbles? I just bought a toilet and had a handyman install. It wobbles. He said it is because the tile floor below is not level. Our old toilet, however- did not wobble. He said give it a week to see if it sets in. What's really going on? Did I get a crappy installation? How do I fix this?
Plumbing Question? I live ina mobile home, and when the shower or the sink runs in the bathroom, I get water outside the house. I think it is a drain pipe, but could be wrong. What suggestion do you have so I can get it fixed and what would I need, Thanks so much.
Plumbing Question about Pipe Connectors? My Plumber has just done a job for me. This was dis-connecting a radiator in the bathroom and replacing it with plastic Pipe Connectors (No soldering). The original pipework is the gravity feed pipes which supply the how water from the boiler which is downstairs. The advantage of this is to keep the towels dry when the central heating is switched off. However, these pipe connectors are chunky and I have reservations about their reliabilty being "push-on" and not soldered on. I therefore went into Wickes Store and bought one of this type of connector to try and understand how it worked. On the packet instructions it states inter alia that they are not suitable for gas, oil, compressed air or connection to back boilers and "gravity circulating heating pipes". So could someone out there who is knowledgeable in this field explain to me 'why not' and again will I have water seepage/leaking in the time ahead at some point ???
Plumbing question part 2? Is it common for radiator valves to fail? When i turn them, the spindle appears to be moving up and down so it must be working right? If it is broken, do i have to replace the whole thing?
