Gas Fireplace Questions

Gas Fireplace? I moved into a new apartment with a gas fireplace. Everything was checked out ok and ready to use. Last night i turned it on for the first time. After one hour not a single degree did the room rise. Why is this?. I can only feel the heat if i am sitting right in front of it. This is the first time ever using a gas fireplace and it is a far cry from a real wood burner. But what can i do to make this thing heat the room. SHould there be a fan in the unit to blow the heat? There is not one. Should i place a small fan in front myself. I cant see burning gas when it doesnt keep me warm.
Gas fireplace? I have a gas fireplace and it isn't getting any gas into it. I have the key but when I turn it, it still isn't getting any gas. I wasn't given a manual when I moved into this house, and I've never had a fireplace before, so I'm not even sure how (or even if I should) to trouble shoot. Any help would be appreciated.
Gas fireplace? What can I use, in a gas fireplace, to have it give a wood burning type fragrance?
Gas fireplace? I am buying a house that has a gas fireplace...is it the same a real fire place or do I have to buy one of those fake logs to put in there? Do I burn real logs? I am not grasping this whole concept, please explain.
Gas Fireplace? I am building a new home and I am just wondernig what the best brands of gas fireplaces are that I should look into?
How know gas fireplace exhaust safe? I have a craftsman installing replacement gas pipe for a gas fireplace and also a gas firplace kit from Lowe's; we are basically replacing the gas fireplace. The house was built in 1958 and at some point had a gas fireplace but it has not been used in years. The chimney is intact and goes up to an opening. I had it inspected by a chimney sweep and he said does not meet code for wood burning as it is just a brick chimney, with no steel insert. I am wondering how do I know the exhaust from this new gas fireplace will all go up the chimney and none will go back into the house? How do I know it is safe. Could I have my gas company test it? Or is there another way to insure it is safe? Is this a valid concern?
gas fireplace vs electric heater? I have a gas fireplace that I use to heat a small enclosed porch during the winter. My furnace is set at 62 and I do not turn in on until Dec 1 but my gas bills still seem high. The furnace does not run constantly. I have good windows and instilation. I was wondering if part of the problem is the gas fireplace running too much. Would an electric heater on the enclosed porch be cheaper to run, or would my electric bill go sky high. The gas fireplace only runs in the evening.
can a gas fireplace be used like a regular fireplace with regular logs and not gas logs? i have a gas fireplace in my home that i would like to use as a regular fireplace because the gas costs too much if u use it too often. i have never had a gas fireplace before is why im asking.
DRU gas fireplace not starting.? I have a DRU Saturnus gas fireplace that was working perfectly fine for a year. Now the problem is after a technician came over to repair my water heater (gas), the fireplace stopped working. The fireplace was there when I moved in a year ago, and the previous owner left no manual or instructions. Only information I could find was a steel panel right above the switchs and valve board that has the manufacturer and the model name of the fireplace. The model is Saturnus and the maker is DRU. I found some info online about the maker, but there wasn't any info about the model. It has red valve(probably for gas), flame control valve(for intensity of fire), and 2 switches, and one switch that has red lightning bolt icon on it. I'm assuming that the switch with a red lightning bolt on is a piezo ignition swtich, but I don't know anything else about others. I tried to turn it on several times by clicking the ignition switch. How can I make this fireplace working again? Forgot to mention that when I press that igition button for pilot, it just gives me a clicking sound with no pilot flame. The main gas valve that connects the fireplace is open, so there's shouldn't be a problem with the flow of gas.
Gas Fireplace - do they sell anything to make it smell like a wood burning fireplace? Where can I buy it? We love our gas fireplace - no mess - but we miss the smell of our wood burning - I was wondering if there was anything you can buy for a gas fireplace, oils or anything you can put in it without starting a fire to make it smell
Our Gas Fireplace...? The valve to turn off the gas to our fireplace is guess where...........in the fireplace. This is very unusual to me. The gas fireplaces I have seen have always had a key to turn the gas on from the outside. The previous homeowner told us to use an oven mit to turn the gas off......Does anyone else have a fireplace like this? Can we add a remote starter so we do not have to put our hands in the hot fireplace?
Gas Starter or Gas Fireplace? I have never used a fireplace before and just moved to an apartment that has one, but I do not know if it is gas or just a gas starter. There is a short pipe that sticks into the fireplace (about four inches), but it doesn't have any holes in it and there is a round object on the wall next to the fireplace that has an opening for a key. If it is just a starter, am I able to start a fire with just a butane lighter or do I have to use the starter as well?
Just moved into house with a natural gas fireplace in basement. 2 Questions...? a. There were no instructions provided for the fireplace so we don't even know how to turn it on. (There's a switch on the wall and some sort of button/dial on the top of the fireplace.) Would the gas company be able to tell us how the fireplace works? b. We don't plan on using the fireplace often (if ever really), but we've only lived here a week and the real question is that a few times I've noticed a faint gas smell in the basement (mostly only in the middle of the night [my bedroom's there] which seems a little funny because the playroom, computer and laundry room are there too so I'm in the basement lots.) Like I said, I'm new to the house and I don't want to overreact... I don't know if it's sewer gas from the laundry room or natural gas from the fireplace or just a different smell in a house that I'm not quite used to. Is it a good idea to get gas fireplaces checked periodically? I have a CO2 detector... should I put it in the basement? Never had a fireplace before. Thanks
Will a Gas Fireplace make your gas bills double in one month? Using a gas fireplace very little.also use furnace to heat house as well.....gas bill went up double from 180.00 to 465.00 in one month...is this normal?...Will a gas fireplace make your gas bill go up that much?...
Why would running a gas line from the meter to a gas fireplace cost $365? I got a fireplace installation estimate. One of the items was running gas line to the fireplace. The gas is about 30 feet from the fireplace with the gas meter inside the basement and the fireplace on the next floor. The ceiling is partially open like an unfinished basement for 15 feet and then a drop ceiling on the finished part for the last 15 feet. A possibly tricky part would be drilling a hole through a brick wall where the fireplace goes in a wood frame room addition added on to a brick house. I know I need a person who is certified to work on gas lines for safety reasons but this one part of the bid seems high and this is ONLY for the gas line installation, not anything else as those things are listed separately (and by the way are also high). This guy is the only dealer of the brand I want in my area and if you don't buy locally they aren't obligated to service your fireplace. Who else is qualified to install gas line?
Gas fireplace shutsoff? My gas fireplace blows outs after maybe 15 minutes. Everything including the pilot light. After starting the pilot light again the pilot light stays on. But when I try to light the gas fireplace it will light but go out including the pilot light after approx. 15 minutes. I'm lost it used to work fine last year. ??????? Thanks for any help
Metal gas fireplace needs updating, any suggestions? We moved into a house with a green "70's" metal fireplace. Hate it, but don't have allot of extra funds to take it out and put in a few one. The fireplace runs from about a foot from the floor all the way to the ceiling, narrowing as it goes up. I'd love to enclose it in fake brick or wood frame, but don't know if this is safe. Can a gas fireplace be framed safely? Is there perhaps a painting technique that might update the look of the fireplace? I do not know where to go with this one. That olive green is more than I can take. We own the home, so changes are possible. But since we just recently purchased the home, we don't have allot of extra money to spend on this project, but do desire a drastic change. Anyone our there seen a similiar problem? Thanks for your help and replies!!!
Gas fireplace flame does not go high enough? My gas fireplace flames don't get very high. The flames barely reach the top of the logs and there's hardly any yellow flame so you can barely tell that it's on--so much for creating a cozy atmosphere. The gas line is turned up as high as it goes and comes directly from the main pipe. There are no other valves outside of the firebox that can be turned and the fireplace valve is turned all the way up. Any ideas? Do I need to buy a new insert? How can I get more yellow flame? The air control lever...Does a sealed unit have this also--one that draws its air for combustion from outside?
Gas fireplace flame keeps dying? I have a gas fireplace - if I turn it on, the flame dies in a few minutes. However, if I leave the glass door to the fireplace open (so that air gets in), then the flame does not die. It seems like no oxygen is available in the fireplace to burn. What can I do to fix it?
Gas fireplace wont light? Im home for Christmas on leave and Im trying to start mom and dads fireplace. The pilot light was out and I was able to re-ignite it but when I turn the fireplace control from off to on it extinguishes the pilot light. I dont know too much about the gas fireplace and was hoping someone could shed some light on my situation. Thanks for any help.
turning wood fireplace into gas fireplace? I have a woodburning fireplace, with a gas line already in place. Changed over to vent free gas logs. works great but I dont seem to get alot of heat from this. Question Do i have to leave my chimney damper open when I turn the fireplace on? It seems like its all going through the roof.
Gas Fireplace Problems? We have a gas fireplace that we haven't used in a long, long time. Now that I want to start using it, I have to ignite it. The only problem is, is it just won't ignite. There is an igniter in it but it just won't start up for me. I've tried it a couple times and I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions about it or how to fix this problems? The weather is getting colder and I would love to have the fireplace starting. I would say the fireplace is around 11 years old. Now, I don't know if anyone did maintainance service on it for the first six years, but I am certain the five years after, there hasn't been any maintainance or service checks on it at all. Thanks for all the answers!
Gas fireplace insert question!? I have a two sided fireplace. You see one side in the living room and one in the kitchen. We burn wood in it right now...but I want to get a gas insert so we don't have to worry about wood anymore. My question is do they make ventless inserts two-sided? I don't want to close up one side of my fireplace. If they do can you refer me to a site??
Gas Fireplace - How much gas does the Pilot Light waste??? I was wondering if it was wasteful to leave the pilot light on during the winter, even if I don't use the gas fireplace everyday? Thanks
Wood AND gas fireplace? We just moved in and we're both fireplace idiots. There's a gas pipe in the back of the fireplace and it works, but we don't know what to do next. Can we burn regular logs in there? Will the house blow up? lol Do we have to use gas logs? Know of any websites where we can learn how to use it? Thanks a lot. Its a big brick old fireplace with a chimney. Do we need a log "cradle" to burn logs or just put them on these two bars that are in there. Thanks
Can I remove my gas logs and make my fireplace wood burning? I never use my gas fireplace because of the cost of natural gas however I would like to take my gas logs out, shut off the gas and make it wood burning. Is that possible/safe? It is an all brick fireplace and chimney. It has a fairly large flue so I think it could accomodate the smoke. Has anyone done this with a fireplace that was built as gas?
new jotul gas fireplace insert keeps shuting down at random times, sometimes the pilot goes out too.? The new natural gas fireplace insert will be operating fine than all of a sudden poof it goes out and sometimes the pilot will go out when it shuts off the fire. It was proffesionally installed by the dealer including the double pipe installed in my chimmney flue for intake and outake. The dealer and gas company have checked everything and they say everything is ok.I also have a gas furnace and hot water heater and they have no problems, need some help as nobody wants to admit that there is a problem.
Is the fact that my gas fireplace beeping good? Now, the gas fireplace has been on all day, or close to it. I was sitting here and not too long ago, the thing began to beep very rapidly and shut off (the blower remained on and is still going), though the beeping is continuing at a slower pace now. Once every few seconds or so. I've sniffed around, and from what I can tell, there's no gas leak. The pilot light is still on, and I've brought a carbon monoxide alarm to the room and it's only sitting about 20 feet away. This is the first time this gas fireplace has had this beeping episode, but I'm still considerably worried. After all. It is a gas fireplace. The blower has since turned off, though the beeping continues! Thanks, Ice. Like you've said, I have checked the pilot light, and it is still on, even blue in colour like it should be. Honestly, it's really confusing. I've yet to smell any gas.
Gas Fireplace Question? We have a gas fireplace. We managed to get the Pilot lit. However, when we turn the dial from "Pilot" to "On" the pilot goes out!! How can we fix this? What is happening?
I have a gas fireplace that is operated by a light switch. It worked during an outage. Can anyone explain how? Recently we had a pretty widespread power outage in Seattle. To my suprise and delight, my gas fireplace worked just fine. This seemed like a Christmas miracle because the fireplace turns on and off with an electric switch. I looked for a battery or something and didn't see anything that resembled a battery. But I flicked the switch on and off and the fireplace responded completely normally. Can anyone explain how this works?
strange smell coming from gas fireplace... trying to clean it, but have a question? I have a strange smell coming from my gas fireplace. The gas company was here today and checked it out and said it wasn't gas or CO. The guy suggested cleaning it. I've got the glass off the fireplace and there is material like stuff under the logs near where the flame would be.... looks kind of like insulation material??! Not sure if it's supposed to be there... or if I should remove it. Thanks in advance for your help!
Can I light a gas fireplace without the gas being on? I just moved into my new house this weekend and the gas company cannot come out to turn on the gas until next week. We are freezing so I just went to buy some Duraflame logs but I'm not sure how or if I can light the logs without the gas being on. My guess is the pilot is not on so I am wondering if can I just light the fireplace without the gas? When I turned the key I heard a hissing sound. Please advise... The hissing is not continuous, I just turned the key to see if it was any gas left in the line and it hissed so I quickly turned the key to the off position. I know the gas is not on because we just moved in. There are no gas fumes. Can I just light the log like you would in a wood fireplace without the gas being on or is this dangerous?
Gas-Fireplace Fan? The fan in my fireplace has stopped working. Am I right that it could be either the switch, the sensor, or the fan-motor. Is there an easy way of knowing which one. What I am getting is a very low pitch humming noise. I think that I can change the switch, or sensor easily. But, I can not even locate the fan. Could it be behind ( at the back of the box), and if so, do I need to take the whole unit out, meaning I should unattach the gas line. Thanks for your help
Gas fireplace worth the money? Getting a new house built, cost is $3500 for a gas logs direct vent fireplace to be built into the house. Is this worth the money? Cost includes the gas line Construction of fire place with direct vent to outside. Slate or marble surround. Mantle Gas logs fire box. Living in North Carolina figure it would be used 4 months out of 12.
Cleaning a gas fireplace? I took apart my gas fireplace to clean the area, but now when I turn it on I can hear the gas coming out - much louder than before. The sound is like the rush or air going through the pipe and holes that allow the fire to esacpe. It's making too much noise now so something must be wrong. Any ideas?
How fix gas fireplace? I have a house built in 1958 that had gas added to the fireplace. What should I be aware of regarding getting it working? I asked my handyman to look at it and I wonder what type of professional could fix it? My chimney sweep said to get a plumber to take out the gas line but I would rather get it to work. Who do you suggest I hire to fix it and what should I look out for? I want to fix it lowest cost but safely.
Does a gas fireplace add to the value of a home? Does the value increase with a gas fireplace? I was first thinking of a regular fireplace but it is so expensive- Are the electric ones cheesy?
Weber Outdoor Gas Fireplace - Opinions Please!? I am considering purchasing a Weber outdoor gas fireplace to replace my outdoor wood burning fireplace. My daughter loves to go outside and roast hot dogs and marshmallows. I am tried of waiting for the fire to go out (I'm paranoid!) and having wood on hand. I thought the Weber would be a good alternative. Any opinions or experiences you could share? Thanks!
Which costs lesss to run: A gas fireplace or a gas heater? It is getting cold now and I was wondering which is more cost efficient, to run the gas fireplace or to run the gas heater? The fireplace works good if you are right by it, but it doesn't warm the whole house like the heater does. I like using the fireplace when I am watching t.v by it, and then when I go to bed I run the heater. But if it costs less, I could just be running the heater instead the whole time.
Adjusting Gas Fireplace Flames? How do I adjust the height of the flame on our gas fireplace. All we see is a tiny blue flame barely peaking out from behind the logs.
help with my gas fireplace? My gas fireplace keeps shutting off by itself, does anyone know what the problem might be? It starts just fine, there's an ignition button to push and it will come on for a little while then it goes off! Does it need to be cleaned? If so, where do we clean and how? We just moved in a year ago and never had a gas fireplace before. Last winter we had no problem. It has a metal grate in front that I don't think comes off , at the bottom it opens to expose the pipes, valves and ignition.
How do I start a gas fireplace? Ok, I know how to start fires...lol...but I never had a gas fire place. I just don't wanna fill my house up with smoke, so I want to do it right the first time. What are the steps to starting the gas fireplace. I got the right wood (my landlord supplies the wood). To let you know, theres the little knob on the front to open the shoot door in the chimney, and theres a knob on the side at the bottom. I guess thats the gas. Then theres a lightswitch like directly on the side of the fireplace also. Please help...I got some nice lookin ladies with big booties coming over..lol (i know that wasnt neccessary, but I need that fire...lol)
Can I light a gas fireplace without electricity? The pilot light in my gas fireplace is turned on, but since I rewired the electricity to my plasma tv above my fireplace the fireplace doesn't turn on. Is there a manual way to light the fireplace? Thank you!
How to turn off gas to fireplace? I had the gas fireplace on this morning, then all of a sudden the flame went completely out. I have no idea what happened. I turned the gas shut off key to the right until it stopped and the light switch for the fireplace to off. Is there anything more I should do and does anyone have an idea what happened?
Converting a gas fireplace insert to propane.? Can you convert a gas fireplace insert with fixed glass doors to propane, to be used outdoors without the glass doors?
