Has anyone ever seen a laundry room/bathroom combo in a basement before?

We have a split foyer home and have since done some remodeling in the basement. We didn't put in the bathroom at the time but now we are thinking of doing so. Trouble is, the walls we put in for the office are cramping the size of the bathroom because the plumbing for the toilet and sink are between the wall and the washer and dryer. There isn't much room left but I think a small powder room could be put there. My husband and my uncle suggested boxing in the laundry room and making it a combo-room and having the bathroom in that room with the washer and dryer, no wall just all together since there is limited space. Putting in walls would make the bathroom more cramped. So just having a toilet and sink put in as if it were a bathroom but leaving it open to the rest of the laundry room. Maybe putting up a "hospital" type curtain on a track to provide some privacy but that would be it. Has anyone ever seen this done before? I would think it wouldn't do well for resale.

  1. my first floor bathroom is like that.. i have a sink, toilet and shower stall on one side of the room, my washer, dryer, and shelves on the other side. there's a couple feet across for walking room
  2. I think that would be fine. and better for re-sale. yes the laundry room is there too but another bathroom adds to the value of the house. I would make sure the bathroom appliances match the washer and dryer so that it flows better.
  3. I had the same problem in a previous home and we resolved the privacy issue with a folding door or what is called a bi-fold door. Thinking back on it we might have been able to use a pocket door to accomplish the same thing. But the folding door swung out into the laundry room because there wasn't room in the powder room to accommodate it. We also used a downsized toilet and a pedestal sink to save space in the bathroom.
  4. yes, in fact. I just visited some friends in Seattle last month, and had the washer/dryer in the downstairs bathroom. It was a very spacious room with the sink, washer/dryer on one side and the toilet & shower on the other.
