Bathroom remodeling question.?
My husband and I would like to demolish our only bathroom and replace everything, do you think we can do a majority of it in a couple of weekends? My husband has little faith or is it just plain lazy. I Wanna tear down ugly wall tile and replace with half drywall and half new wall tile, put in a smaller whirlpool tub and replace wall tile around tub, rip up the tile floor and replace with some ceramic. Eventually, get a new toilet and vanity and cabinet. HGTV has me pumped up! I think we can do it without hiring contractors.

- No way you'll get this done in six days (I'm giving you fridays) No way in the world.
- its possible. it would probably take more than a few weekends. depending on how fast you work and what surprise set-backs you come across. some things that will save you time and hassles: 1. on the walls, when tearing down the old tile, be very careful to leave the surface behind it on the bottom half of the wall. since you can't put tile onto drywall, you can leave the surface from the old tile and reuse it for the new. just cut it at the line your new tile will start and put drywall on the rest. 2. do the floor last. don't want to break an tiles during destruction/ construction 3. draw out the grid for the tiles you are going to place. don't just give yourself one or two reference points. draw out the whole thing on the floor and wall.
- I think your husband is correct. I would do the small work my self but for the complicated parts I would hire a contractor. Realize that you are talking of installing a whirlpool not just a simple tub. Also keep in mind that if you do a shoddy job the value of your home will go down.
- It really depends on your own skills. And your husbands. My husband is very skilled at finding out how to do something and his ability to do it. He just doesn't. Our house has been in progress for over twenty years. I have had to hire somethings to be done, because he couldn't or wouldn't find the time to do it. Well, that is my horror story. A remodeling job such as you describe is not easy but can be done if you keep at it. Don't remove anything until you are ready and able to replace it right then, ie the toilet, shower.
- well depends on your experience of cause. if you are looking to spend a lot of money on your bathroom then get it done right buy a profesional. if you find the costs are to much to get contractors in just simply do the bits you can and when it comes to the specialist bits then get the contractors in.
- I didn't read the other answers first and I will bet that the majority will say no way. There are always, always unforeseen problems with plumbing especially if it has been there awhile. We were only replacing a vanity in our second bathroom and it snowballed because we could no longer get the same size. We ended up re-doing the whole bathroom including the floor and walls., It took WEEKS and my husband is retired, not lazy and really good at that kind of thing. Good luck! Don't get mad at your hubby if it doesn't go well. Chances are it won't be his fault!
- you probably can do this on your own, but you are looking at far more that two weekends. the demolitin alone will take one weekend. if you're only working weekends, i would estimate 4-6 weeks or work.
