For Remodeling Professionals: How small can a kitchen be?
I hv basement with family room, bathroom, playroom, laundry room and but need a small kitchen. I dont hv much space left but I was thinking of remodeling in the laundry room because theres a window nearby. The space is 10 by 8. Right now it has full size washer/dryer and a large washing sink. - Try an over under wash and dryer. Build a cabinet around it. That is fairly common in apartments. Use the laundry sink for the area to install a cabinet for the kitchen sink. Plumbing is available. Casey
- I went to Ikea last year and found that they had a unit that has a hot plate, sink and mini-fridge combination. You could buy this along with some kind of tall cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. You could get one and arrange the shelves anyway you want. They have different door sizes and you could even have a built in microwave installed in the tall cabinet. So you can have food storage on top, built in microwave in the middle and pots and dishes below. You can also buy an 18" dishwasher and a 24" stove with oven. I had a stove like that before when I was starting out and I could cook everything on it. The oven was big enough for a turkey and everything else. They also sell cute 10 CF refridgerator freezers that wouldn't take up too much energy. If you are planning to use it for cooking for parties the mini stove will be adequate for cooking pizza and keeping dishes warm. A microhood is also convinient for cooking popcorn and reheating leftovers. I am building the same set up in my basement and I actually am taking a small area for a full size stove and fridge, small sink, small dishwasher and a small counter. Ikea has a free downloadable software that you can use to get an idea of how your space is actually going to work. It is not that hard to do and you can get a general idea of the plan. You dont have to go with Ikea. The measurements of cabinets are somewhat standard and this will help put the kitchen together. Good luck.
