How does one improve on 25mm polycarbonate conservatory roofing to give the same benefits as ordinary roof?

Benefits to include constant shading from sun, warmth and heat retention during the winter months, since I do not require any lighting from the roof. My conservatory is well-built with ample provision for windows and doors. The only problem is with the roof - too much light at all times and heat from sun during summer, with extremely cold conditions in winter. I would be extremely grateful if there were to be simple ways of making the roof give the same satisfying conditions as ordinary roofing and ceilings. Extension was built to provide an extra living space for use all year round. all my contributors have offered very helpful and enlightenening suggestions. I am much better placed knowledge-wise now than before I started. Christopher C and Cunny have been very helpful. Thank you all

  1. i answered other question from yourself.if you keep question open i will find out trade name for you tomorrow,i know a guy who fits the stuff but only in Scotland.i will answer question again tomorrow.
  2. I had the same problem with my polycarbonate roof so i bought a roll of 'superfoil insulation' this is a 5mm thick product which had excellent u values it consists of a layer of wool fibre insulation sandwiched between two layers of aluminium foil. I cut out the foil to the shapes of the polycarbonate and stuck self adhesive velcro arround the edges, hooks on the polycarb loops on the superfoil, this way i can peel off the insulation and just leave a strip of velcro arround the edge of the polycarbonate when the insulation is not required. this had made a considerable improvment to keeping my conservatory warm.
  3. I think 'dodgyspark' is refering to a product called 'coolkote' It's a solar control film applied to the inside surface much like the window tint you see on cars. It's grey/opaque in colour to control glare, and has good heat reflection/retention properties. Try contacting www.coolkote.co.uk for more info. Hope this helps!
  4. there is a company called decra who do lightweight tiles specially designed for lightweight roofs on mobile homes.they look like proper roofing tiles and come in rolls of about twenty.they come in various designes and colours and insulate very well.
