I have a flat roof addition. The roof has roll roofing on top thats old and 2x6 rafters. The room is 15x15.?

Can I remove the roll roofing and put 1/2 inch fiber insulation board and a rubber roof(epdm, firestone,john mansville)? I just wanted to make sure the weight would be supported. It has a drywall ceiling underneath.

  1. This might be a good time for a total tear off. new state of the art insulation between the rafters, and new plywood sheathing, installed with a slight pitch away from the main house. You want a tight roof, that will last for years, and a sound surface to put it on is the first step.
  2. The rolled roofing can be removed and there will be either plywood or some other wood sheeting under it. You could place the insulation over the wood substrate and the new roofing material over it. I//2" fiberr insulation is not really going to do much. You would be better off blowing in celulose between the 2x6s.
  3. Let me address the fact that you have a 15' ft. span with 2x6 rafters. That is a bit of a stretch for 2x6. I would be very careful about how much more weight you add to this.
