Roofing question!?

A section of my roof is over a screened in porch. The porch is on footings so I have added windows and a new door to make it a year round living space. The slope on this section of the house is less than 3/12 and there is a rolled roof on it. I heard that when the roof is less than 3/12 rolled roofing is necessary. I want to add skylights and a new roof. I am in Wisconsin. If I put down strips of ice and water shield and overlap them across the roof from the bottom up could I then possibly shingle over that.

  1. sure
  2. Putting shingles on anything less than a 4:12 slope is just asking for leaks - plus I image the snow load on a 3:12 will give you some mighty structual problems too unless the roof joists are beefy.
  3. After you have installed the skylights, have a rubber membrane roof installed. Rubber roofing works extremely well on low pitched roofs and even on flat roofs. When properly installed it will also add insulation to the house since it is usually put down over a layer of insulation board. To get the rubber properly sealed and seamed (if necessary) you should seek a professional to do the job. Then the job will be done properly and will have a warranty to protect you in case of problems. Otherwise, rolled roofing is going to be the next best solution other than using steel roofing. But the cost of residential looking rather than barn type steel may exceed the cost of a rubber roof. I hope that this helps to answer your question, or at least gives you a few ideas.
