what are the advantages and disadvantages of flexable photovoltaic solar cells?

such as uni-solar roofing products. in particular, is there any disadvantages compared to rigid framed pv panels? such as efficiency or out-put verse surface area?

  1. Flexible cells are printable much like solid state circuits which reduces their cost dramatically. Also, unlike delicate contemporary solar panels flexible cells are more durable and less vulnerable to weather. Typically solar panels should last 30-40 years but (concievably) flexible panels should last even longer. Efficiency of solar panels between current and flexible cells is comparable with rates of 10-15% which is still not enough to make them really economical yet (unfortunately).

  3. One advantage, in addition to the advantages of any photovoltaic solar cell, are that you can wrap around corners & odd angles or shapes. This is tremendously helpful in military or aerospace (satellite) applications when limited space or unusual shaped surfaces are critical issues. I do not know any disadvatages, other than those of all photovoltaics, namely low energy density, and cloudy or other non-sunny conditions. ;-)
