Conservatory roof materials?

I need to get some conservatory roof panels but need to do so on a tight budget. Someone suggested that I could use corrugated plastic. I know this would be the cheapest option but am unsure if it is wise to use this? Any advice would be great

  1. corrugated panels will look cheap aswell as being cheap. Try Polycarbonate roofing, try going to a window firm that deals with trade aswell as retail, for prices. Or DIY firms that sell conservatories.
  2. Thats not a gr8 idea at all.You should use polycarbonate sheets or glass.
  3. They are ok, and you have to be careful what you panel the roof in.. too solid and it may be considered an extension and need planning permission. A good cheaper alternative is to pop along to a recycle yard for old double glazing units, get a couple that match and hey presto! Double glazed roof at a fraction of the cost.
  4. I have used tri-wall polycarbonate, it comes in very rigid sheets and is a doddle to fit. Buy all the accessories.
  5. you will regret it m8 every successful one i've been in has been glass sorry it will be a huge mistake anyway it's not corrugated plastic, it's a laminted plastic that's used, unless he's mad your friend, you may as well build a tree-house ;) glass all the way sorry
  6. Corrugated plastic would be difficult or impossible to seal down to the roof members to get a waterproof joint, and it sags. Triple layer polycarbonate is much more rigid, and would be a lot easier to seal around. Most of the big DIY stores sell it. Have a look at www.wickes.co.uk under roofing and guttering. It isn't cheap, though - around £55 per square metre for 16mm thick, and £11 or £14, depending on the size of sheet, for 10mm.
