- The "GAF Corporation" manufactures and sells "Timberline" asphalt roofing shingles. "Elk Premium Building Products, Inc." manufactures and sells "Elk" brand asphalt roofing shingles. GAF is by far the larger company. Elk is a high end building products company, as the name implies. It is a much smaller company than GAF. Both companies make quality roofing shingles. Elk tends to be more expensive and they are not as widely distributed as GAF products. Warranties are much the same on similar types of shingles. Given your climatic conditions, I would feel comfortable with either manufacturer. I would make the decision based on cost, color, style, and availibility. Keep in mind that wind and/or hail damage will not be covered by either shingle warranty. This type of damage will be covered by your homeowner's casualty insurance. From that point of view, I might give a slight edge to GAF since they are so widely available. Check out the following links: http://www.elkcorp.com/ http://www.gaf.com/General/GAFintro_noflash.asp Both sites offer product specifications, color selections, and warranty information. Both sites also provide local dealer information. Good luck with your roofing project.
