Preparing concrete slab for floating floor installation?

I have a slab foundation that I would like prep for a floating floor. There are two opening in the room to attached rooms. The foundations of the two rooms are not level with each other. Previous owner tried to fill in and slope down with concrete filler for transition between surfaces, but left a very rough and uneven transition. Can I sand or grind the the openings for smoother transition....with what? Will that work when preping for floating floor style flooring?

  1. A transition in a floating floor is a big deal you would have to make the transition as even as you can.You can grind the floor smooth might try wet stone its real dusty
  2. TRY A POWDERED FORMULA THAT YOU MIX WITH WATER IT'S CALLED 'ARDEX' IT'S SELF LEVELING. USED IT PLENTY OF TIMES FOR BASEMENT FLOORS INSTALLING LENO AND SUCH. IT NEEDS TO TROWELED ON.
  3. Not too sure you can install a floating style floor down a slope. You could level the area and make the change in floor elevations a step.
  4. I would use a self leveling compound. It works great and will avoid chipping and sanding. a little uneven is OK with a floating floor, they are forgiving just make sure there is not a hude bump in there anywhere or you will feel it.
  5. Most floating floors must be level with on 1/4" over 12 ft. (Check with your manufacturer) Mapei makes a self leveling compound that is real easy to use. You can find this product @ Lowe's. A downward slope is not a problem as long as it is constant in the entire room but then you could not use the self leveler. Make sure you use a transition @ every passage way 6ft or less and Leave the recommended expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
