Flooring Installation Types?

If it says that the installation type is: On, Above, or Below Grade...what does that mean?

Public Comments

  1. On grade is the same as ground level, usually a slab. Above grade is above ground level, usually a wooden subfloor. Below grade is below ground level, usually concrete basement. these terms are used mostly when talking about hardwood flooring. Solid hardwood must be used for On or Above Grade. Engineered hardwood can be used with ANY grade. Another tip, almost all hardwood 5'' or wider MUST be glued down. Some 3'' and 4'' boards require a glued down installations as well. please make note of Glued or Stappled installation before you purchase your floor. Good Luck!
