New Roofing, Shingles or Metal? Advantages and Disadvantages. Cost?
house is easy to heat but hard to keep cool, which is best shingles or metal, cost compared to durability. will metal be noisy during rain storms?

- your roof really has nothing to do w/ the temperature inside your house. the ventilation controls that. so you can use vents, turbines, etc to keep the heat out of the attic. asphalt shingles are considerably less costly than metal. metal is not noisy during storms. the metal will last longer.
- Metal is not as noisy during storms as they say, I can barely hear rain at my house, and we have metal. I like metal better because it's more durable, and cheaper. It keeps cool just as well as shingles do. And you can install it right over your existing roof, no demolition. Good luck!
- I know little on this subject but I will tell you that colored metal roofs will fade over time.
- Go ceramic. Shingles separate and slide, and metal rusts.
- A good shingle, metal roofs will fade eventually. You may need to put in a good ridge vent or exhaust fan to get rid of some of the heat in your attic area since your house is east to heat and hard to cool. They also make roofing materials out of recycled rubber now that look like slate, I would ask someone if you happen to see a roof in your area that you like and see if they are satisfied with it, word of mouth is the best advertising as people will let you know if they are satisfied with something or not.
- The reason why that is, is because your house is designed with the greenhouse effects. It absorbs heat. Get a reflective roof (such as metal) & it will reflect the heat. Although it will be noisier during the rain. You could also have your roof painted white. White reflects heat, black absorbs heat. Insulation retains cool & heat. You could also get a solar-reflecting material to make it easy.
- seems that none of the previous answers have answered the 2 main questions... 1. Cost? as far as cost goes, you will pay probably twice the cost for your metal roof than you will pay for a 30 yr architectural shingle.... 2. Durability? obviously the metal roof is going to last longer (probably 50yr warranty) , however ANY ROOF IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE ROOFERS THAT INSTALL IT. 3. Sound? Well, the metal roof will be a little noisy, however as stated by another answer, it can be put on top of the existing roof, giving it a small insulation factor against some of the noise. Also you can put a foamboard insulation underneath the metal panels to further insulate for heat/cold and noise. 4 Ventilation? Ridge Vents......it's pretty much that simple.....any time that the hot air in your attic can get out at the highest peak it will be doing its job, turbines or exhaust fans do not work nearly as good due to flaws in design. My final suggestion....Get whatever type of roof you prefer, just make sure that you research the company that you are going to choose to do the work and make sure that everything is up to par.
