when installing a metal roof, is it typical to apply the roofing over furring strips or flat on plywood?

  1. since metal expands and contracts it is best to install on furring strips placed two feet on center which allows for movement.
  2. I'm assuming that you are thinking about a flat standing seam type of roofing material. If that is the case, firring strips are the way to go. Installing this type of roofing directly on plywood will trap moisture under the metal and it will rust through from the bottom side. Firring strips allow for air circulation and will prevent this from happening. Good luck with your project.
