metal roofing whats your take on it good or bad?

I think I am leaning toward a metal roof and was wanting to hear from other people about it, if they like it, is it better than tile, stuff like that

  1. My own opinion is I HATE metal roofing. Sure, it holds up good, but the noise when it rains is unbearable to me. I will never get metal roofing again.
  2. I built a cabin in the mountains of Tennessee... I put a metal roof on it, and love it! Another cabin was built near mine the following year, they used traditional shingles... With high winds, and all the trees, they have already had to replace part of that roof. My roof looks the same as the day I put it on. (i think it is 9 y/o) I wanted to use tile, but the cost difference was so much that the sensible choice was to go with metal.
  3. same for me i hate the way they sound! i have also installed a few and let me tell you they are no fun to install either!i would go with tile
  4. Metal roofs will last a lifetime...to do away with the noise when it rains you should add more insulation in the attic. Consult with a roofer for your best options on the noise thing though as they may have a better solution for that annoyance. I myself like the sound...it's kind of soothing to me.
  5. Pine trees are hard on shingles so I put metal on my cottage. It is a little more noisy but it will last a long time. One thing to consider is in the winter , snow and ice will slide off in large chunks. You will have to make sure that nothing sits in this drop zone. I had a deck [which was built poorly, no footings. by previous owner] driven down 3 inches in spring melt.
  6. you don't say what kind of structure you are planning on. but in most cases you will find the metal roof works very well .
