  1. You Need the following information: 1- How many layers of shingling do you already have? 2- It is best to check out roofers in your area who are reliable and have a good reputation. (we blew it on that one). 3- Check your local code enforcement office (Township or county). 4- When the material is delivered, check the label on the shingles when they are delivered. (anything closer than 100 miles of coastline need to withstand at least 100 mph winds) 5- Companies should not start in November & December to do the job, provide their own dumpster, and cleanup in case the old shingles need to be removed (2 or more layers), clean up all of their mess (when they miss the dumpster). (Our company delayed on a half done job because of the weather and another company had to finish). [one good company wouldn't even touch the job]. 6- Make sure everything is in writing, (I had to repair the flashings, They put a blue plastic tarpaulin over the whole roof, it blew off, broke part of the chimney and kept the chimney covered till we noticed. 7- After the first delay, I called the code official and he showed us the specs on the shingles (for 80mph) and they should have been for 100mph) so they had to remove the incorrect shingles and start over. 8- Check every detail before you start or get a happy customer to recommend a Local roofer. (ours was from NY and cheaper) - dumb decision. Good Luck - You now are a little bit better informed ! ! !
