Remodeling Good Idea?

I am a Black Belt and one of the top instructors at this karate studio that I teach/train at and I organized 4 other people with myself to help remodel the studio that was dirty...I mean 35 years worth. I figured that I was sick of training to the point where my white clothes and feet would get black. So we cleaned and remodel a little to make it nice for people to come in and be proud, and so we wouldn't get in trouble with a health inspector coming in, but now I believe that my teacher isn't too thrilled but he's happy that we cared enough to help. What do I do?

  1. I take it you didn't get your sensei's permission first? I think it's great that you and others cared enough about your school to maintain it. I wish all students would feel that way. I would recommend speaking to your sensei and asking him whether he's unhappy about it or not. After all, you may have just misinterpretted his reaction. However, if he is unhappy, apologize and ask if there's anything that he'd like you or the others to do in order to help the dojo. I do agree with you that the place should be clean...but it is his in the end and he has the final word on how it's maintained.
  2. It was a good thing that you cared enough to clean. Also, a karate school is properly called a "dojo" not a studio. And one tradition in a dojo is daily cleaning. This is something that should be done out of respect for the school by the students. Anyway, it was good of you to clean but if you changed things you should have asked your sensei first. he is the head of your school and should make the decisions. Good Luck!
  3. Find a cleaner place to fight, like a bar or a night club.
