  3. Have a plan. Being a remodel contractor, most clients fall into one of the two catagories. They either get really excited and decide they want us to demo other parts of there house and we just started...... or......they want the job done tomorrow and we just started yesterday. My recommendation to you is start with a small project, FINISH it to the end and then move on. I can't tell you how many homes I have seen where the couple, usually the husband, start a remodel and never finish. Anyway, enjoy the process and good luck
  4. As a contractor I agree with Mark C., have an established plan with a realistic deadline. Dont want the job started on Monday and need it completed for a party on Wednesday. Contact a local contractor, sit down with them and discuss a small area, or the most needed area to be remodeled first. If need be then call an architect, and design the proper plans and submit them to your local building and zoning department for approval. In most cities and counties certain jobs do not need approval, but always check. Then start your remodel. The bathrooms, and kitchen are the most expensive to usually do, but there also the biggest selling points. I'd have to say a finished basement would come next. Here in the Chicago land area the average bathroom remodel would start out around $5,000 for a basic one, but I've done bathrooms all the way up to $60,000. The kitchen i would say is about $30,000 here for semi custom and the sky is the limit.
