  1. in my opinion asking to leave the house after remodeling is very unfair..so u should collect the money for laber
  2. Did you have a written agreement? Did you exchange labor for rent? I would contact a lawyer.
  3. Unfortunately, I believe neither. When you approached the landlord about the work he said, agreed to pay for materials. That is a verbal contract and implies he pays for materials only. When renting the landlord has the responsibility for the upkeep of the property. However, usually if something is damaged by you (or guest), he has the right to hold you liable. Usually it is in the lease or contract. Lets say you took it upon yourself to beautify the landscape with annual flowers/plants or trees. You made it beautiful for your benefit. However, when you move you can't make him pay for labor. But you could take your plants with you, maybe. When an item is permanently installed or affixed to the property then it belongs to the property, house. I lived in a similar situation years ago where my wife and I put in new floors. Before that you could look thru the spaces and see the ground. We put in plumbing, heat, closets, made to bedrooms, kitchen and living room. He didn't want to rent to us cause the house was in such bad shape. I/we were desperate to find/provide a better home for us and the children. He agreed to pay for material and two months free rent. It was such a change that the military made a documentary of it and how (at that time) it was so difficult for Black Military to find housing near a base. However, I would check at your local court house in the Landlord Tennant department.
