Path and patio material?

There's a chunky sand-like material that I'm trying to find the name of. This material packs down quite firm, but surface is somewhat loose. I've come up with 'hoggin' but read it is more prominent in the southern states. I'm in Central IL btw. I'm building a short path that opens to a semi-circular sitting area with an outdoor fireplace. Wanting something less costly than paving stones.
