If you buy a propane "fireplace" what would you need to do to hook it up?

I mean.. what would be involved.. how would you connect it to the propane tank outside?? is it costly?? would it be easier to buy a "gel fueled" fireplace that uses the canned fuel?? This is to use as backup heat when the power goes out this winter.

  1. I'm not sure what all is involved, but I DO know that hooking it up yourself is both dangerous and illegal. It must be done by a professional (probably a plumber), and if you don't already have gas lines running to the room where you want the fireplace (and I'm assuming you don't), you'll have to get those installed as well. I'm guessing you'll likely need a permit from your town or municipality, too. In all, probably a pretty expensive job. The gel-fueled fireplace or even an electric one would probably be easier and less costly in your situation. I don't think you need to have it authorized, but I'd still call to make sure, and if you go with electric, have an electrician make sure your wiring is up to code and install it for you. Good Luck!
