Can you use gel canisters in decorative fireplace?

My fireplace is decorative only- an old one that used to work, but doesn't any longer. I know you can buy the fake logs along with the gel canisters (such as Sungel) without having to buy the entire fireplace kit. My searching online says both that you can use the cannisters in a decorative fireplace if the flue is closed. Other searchs say there is no smell, fumes, smoke...and so implies that it wouldn't matter whether the flue was open or closed. Does anyone have any idea about this. Thanks for helping!

  1. Sounds ok to me. Check with the place you plan to buy it from. If they don't think it will work, I am sure they will help you find an alternative.
  2. I'm not going to say absolutely, positively yes, but it would be close. Read the information posted on this site: http://www.justfireplaces.com/decorative_fireplaces.html If you are using an alcohol based gel canister I think you could, especially since decorative non-vented fireplaces use them. If you do try it, keep a good eye on it and don't let children or pets near the flames. It's also a good idea to check with the sales person or another person who has tried or done this with a non-functional fireplace. Hope this helps and good luck.
