  1. They make anchor bolts that you can attach by drilling into the rocks. I would stay away from drilling into the mortar it isn't strong enough to hold the bolt and if it chipped out it would weaken the hold on the rocks.
  2. you can buy a 2 piece bracket system that firstly fastens to the stone using a special hard-tipped drill bit and plugs then the bracket that you screw to the mantel will fasten to it. Consult the experts that sell the right products you need....ie. Home Depot, Rona etc
