1. muricacid should do it.
2. use a masonry cleaner ,they have muriadic acid in them about 10%,don't use strait acid.shurklean is a brand that is used commercially.or burn a creosote log.
3. muriatic acid is always a pain to use indoors. vinegar is acedic and much safer, try that and a stiff brush, (not wire). if that doesnt work try boric acid
