can i use mortar/cement to smooth an uneven stone fireplace, so i can tile over it?

  1. Your problem is more the reason why it's uneven. Is the surface it's laying on deteriorating? I have seen a few that eventually started to drop down and had to be restructered.
  2. lots of options here, you could parge over the stonewrk and probably get it smooth enough to tile over. you could frame it and hang cement board or mesh. sorry but to me its a sin to cover stonework with tile but im a mason and am partial to stonework...
