what is the best way to remove black soot from a white stone fireplace indoors?

We burned a gas fire without opening the flue. Now the white stone front of the fireplace is black soot.

  1. rub a dub scrub, soap and water, or 409 spray,
  2. Try using the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on the stone. They work great on just about anything. However, after you have gotten the soot removed, use some paste car polish or Butcher's Wax on the stones to protect them in the future.
  3. A mild solution of muratic acid sprayed on the doors works great. Use a well ventilated area.
  4. Dawn dish soap & hot water. If you have Marble or Granite make sure to dry it, even if it does not feel wet. Water and natural stone are not a good mix. You may want to wash the walls too. This happen to a friend. Very Big mess.
