Is it safe to sheetrock over a stone fireplace??

I have a giant stone double fireplace that seperates 4 rooms.. It is dangerous to my 1 year old and an ugly 80's stone.... can I sheetrock over the stone and still use the fireplace?

  1. Only if you use non combustible material and fire caulk. I hate fireplaces, so why don't you consider removing it? They are dangerous to kids and household contents when you have a fire.
  2. yes, you can sheet rock over the stone fireplace, but why in the world would anyone think stone is ugly, no matter what the age happens to be. Remember your one year old will grow up quick and you won't have to worry about it. If you cover it up or paint it, and then you try and sell your house, the value will go down.
  3. no
  4. No. What you might try is cleaning the stone, and buying proper fire screens. I have to believe there are screens manufactured for more security reasons than just to keep sparks IN. You might also not use the fireplace when your child is about. Certainly the curiosity of a 1 year old who is likely very mobile is the prime concern anyway. You might Try a general search in the WWW,,,as I just did, using keywords in your browser. Rev. Steven
