ventless heaters...fireplaces are they truly safe?

We have a ventless fireplace in our home with extra air vents but yet I still smell odors from it where no one else does.. Is this safe.

1. Get a carbon monoxide detector with a digital readout and if it doesn't measure anything then all is good.
2. Sounds like its not burning efficiently or completely. It still gives off carbon monoxide which you cant smell, but if other fumes are getting past the doors carbon monoxide is coming out too. Call a local fireplace shop to get it inspected and dont use it till you do.
