Instructions on using a gas fireplace? I know how to work a wood burning fireplace, but no experience on gas?

Public Comments

  1. I know how
  2. On a gas FP there is a gas starter. So if you have real wood in there, you turn on the gas starter, then light a match to ignite it. You leave the gas on only long enough to start the wood burning, then you turn it off. If you have artificial logs, then you light it and leave it on.
  3. There are two types.. 1) A gas starter, which lights and is urned off when wood logs are lit. 2) A gas burner with ceramic logs and "embers" (fiberglas) for efffect. Assuming the latter, if it has a pilot light, light it as you would a water heater or gas furnace. Turn on or off. My gas fireplace has a wall sitch that turns on and off. The damper in the chimney activates with heat and need no manual work. If you have a manual damper in the firepace, open it slightly for gas...not much draft is needed.
