How do you tell the difference between a wood-burning fireplace and a gas log only fireplace?

  1. A gas log only fire place has holes on the bottom to let the fire come out. A Wood-burning fire place has a solid floor, no holes
  2. My guess would be a "gas log" fireplace is a propane stove, like I have in my home. It looks like a wood-burning stove but has fake logs inside. You flip the switch & you have fire, much like a stovetop. In a wood-burning fireplace you, uh, burn wood.
  3. If you are looking to add gas logs to your woodburning fireplace, check your local HVAC contractor for kits or try looking around online, Lennox Hearth and Home, Superior. Usually gas fire places have knock-outs on the ceramic sides of the fireplace.
