Unless your propane source is far away, the pipe won't be the most expensive part - rather the labor to install it will drive the cost. If you have propane already in your house, you can tap into the nearest location, usually a stove or furnace. A basement or crawlspace will provide access for the plumber to run the pipe extensions. If your house is on a flat slab, then you may need to tear open some walls, or else run pipe underground outside the house. Inside your fireplace, do you want merely a gas-fired log for mostly appearance, or do you want a fireplace insert for heating? The former will be much less expensive than the latter. To control costs, you may want to ask your plumber if you can do some of the work - digging a trench, opening holes in walls, etc. Make sure your plumber is licensed in your state, insured and bonded. Get 3 or more quotes and check their references before you sign any contracts. You also want to have your city or county do an inspection of the work for safe and proper installation - that means you have to pull a permit, but it will buy you peace of mind, and avoid possible future legal problems when you sell your house.
